Belkin F5D7000 Wireless Desktop Network Card Review

Belkin F5D7000 Wireless Desktop Network Card
Average Reviews:

This card is really easy to install if you read and follow the instructions. The anti-static wrap on the card states in large bold font that the software must be installed before the card is inserted into the machine. If you install the software first, the card will be recognized right away. Configuration is easy -- just match the settings on your router. I was able to install this card and start browsing the web in 10 minutes. I then downloaded and updated the firmware on the card. The latest firmware is stable. I never lose a connection. I have this computer in a separate room from my router. No more mess of network cables!

Belkin networking presents its latest innovation, the 802.11g Wireless Desktop Network Card. The Card works as an ideal standalone to give you instant networking capabilities. It features breakthrough 802.11g technology that makes wireless file transfers and downloads faster than ever before. 802.11g technology provides you with networking speeds nearly five times faster than the current Wi-Fi (802.11b) standard. The Card sets up on any desktop PC, with the simplicity of Plug-and-Play technology. It slides easily into the PCI expansion slot to enable a wireless connection to your network. 54g technology is the easiest wireless network to implement. The Card uses the wireless 802.11g 2.4GHz standard to offer you the widest working range-up to 1800 feet-and greater interoperability in mixed networking environments. 802.11g is backward-compatible with the 802.11b Wi-Fi networking standard, so it allows you to implement faster wireless technologies in combination with existing 802.11b Wi-Fi networks. An added Turbo Mode feature isolates your network from 802.11b wireless clients and allows your network to transmit data at the highest 802.11g data rate.

IOGEAR Wireless-G High Speed USB 2.0 Adapter GWU523 Review

IOGEAR Wireless-G High Speed USB 2.0 Adapter GWU523
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the USB wireless adapter from Iogear for 2 months now and have had no problems. My Windows XP based Dell PC recognized the adapter quickly and started working immediately. The PC with the adapter is in a room that is about 50 feet from our router (with 2 walls between)and it has had no problems receiving a very strong signal.
One note for new users. The adapter has software for wireless networks that must be used to find and control links to wireless networks. The Windows XP wireless network utility can not be used with this adapter (or at least I have not found a way to use the Windows XP utility). However, the utility supplied with the adapter works fine.

Sirius TTR1 Tabletop Internet Radio (Black) Review

Sirius TTR1 Tabletop Internet Radio (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll answer the two big questions first: Howard Stern? yes. Do you need to keep clicking a button so the radio doesn't shut off? no (see comment below). At least, as of right now. The radio is capable of both software and channel updates.
update: As of now, the Sirius website requires a human click every 90 minutes for streaming audio. This particular radio will play for hours without intervention but will eventually shut off. These features may be updated at whim by Sirius through software updates.
How does it sound? It sounds exactly as described - it's meant to be a tabletop boombox. It's the perfect companion for garage, laundry room, or kitchen. Don't expect real high fidelity sound out of these speakers. It has both a headphone jack and line out jack so it's possible to use amplified speakers or route the output into your home stereo system. When the line output is fed through my home stereo system the sound is wonderful. However, when I plugged my iPod into the aux input I was not impressed with thee quality, which I fault the iPod for.
I've been waiting for a gizmo like this ever since I subscribed to Sirius. I am an apartment dweller with no means for an outdoor antenna. Sirius works great in my car, but the only way I can listen at home is by being chained to my computer. Sirius has always made possible streaming audio from their website. But, every 90 minutes you need to click on the dead man's switch to keep the music flowing. This radio works exactly the same as the Internet streaming but is self-contained with a beautiful display. It also functions as a clock radio, although it's a tad big for the nightstand.
Before purchasing, it's best to become familiar with how streaming audio works on their website. You will need to purchase Internet streaming ability from Sirius in addition to your radio account. Be sure this is all working first.
The radio connects to your local area network via wired Ethernet or wireless with an external 802.11 antenna. You have all the settings available to you - enter the IP address of your choice or select dhcp via wired or wireless. I had a small gotcha, which was it wouldn't connect via WAP so I needed to configure my router for WEP. Everyone is tending to move away from WAP so this was a necessary evil. I entered my ASCII key and it connected just fine. My Sirius username and password worked right away. If you have MAC address filtering, you can retrieve the address via the menus.
The tuner works similar to that of a dashboard radio with a turn and push to click dial. Menus are accessed fairly easily, but it took a little while to get into some of the settings. The first thing I wanted to set was the clock and DST. Be advised that automatic time setting is on by default. The first day, I had to wrestle a bit to get it on the right hour of the day - so, don't set any alarms until you work all this out or put the clock into manual settings if you don't trust it. It's all configurable.
The display has a wonderful signal strength indicator so you can place it for the best reception or switched to wired Ethernet. There is no option for batteries, so you will need an AC outlet and the radio is amazingly heavy for a small box. It has automatic or manual brightness and a remote control, plus an input jack for a CD player or iPod, but no interconnection cables are provided. The display presents the channel name and song name with a nice volume control knob.
If you have Sirius and you're looking for speakers for your iPod or iPhone, get this radio instead of amplified speakers. I'm extremely happy that I can finally listen to Sirius in any room at home without an antenna. You'll need a solid, reliable broadband connection to operate this radio else you will hear dropout's and interruptions. This is not the fault of the radio. Again, test out the streaming audio on your computer first.

861W Ethernet Security Router Review

861W Ethernet Security Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not your office-store router nor is it from Ciscos "Linksys" line. This router runs full IOS and therefore is best configured with the CLI. I have never seen a gui or web interface for IOS routers that were worth mentioning. The wireless AP, while built into the router is treated as a separate unit. It runs its own IOS image and maintains a separate config. This adds to the complexity of configuring the box. You will want to have (or hire) someone with at least some experience with Cisco routers for this unit. On the other hand, this is a perfect practice router if you want to take a video or online Cisco Certification course. I used a non-wireless version of this unit for that very purpose years ago.
This router has every advanced routing feature you can think of available to it depending on the IOS image you install on it. If fact the one that came with it had them all as far as I can tell. I have been running it for weeks now with no hiccups and no rebooting needed. A great router well worth the price.

Cisco-Linksys WPS54G Wireless-G 802.11g Print Server Review

Cisco-Linksys WPS54G Wireless-G 802.11g Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cisco may be engaging in unlawful and deceptive trade practices by stating that this print server will work with "most" type 1 & 2 USB printers. What does "most" mean?
I spent 6.5 hours on the phone with Linksys techs trying to get connected to my Canon i850s. Nothing on the web site, disc manual or box listing printers it would not work with--a clear failure to inform when they have to know it won't.
One of the questions the techs ask is whether you are running a multifunction printer. (I wasn't.)Apparently this print server does not work with many multifunction printers, but Linksys and Cisco do not state that anywhere that I could find. (After I buy the thing is not the time to find out I got the wrong product.)
Finally a senior tech came online and said the print server would not work with my printer. I asked him for a list of printers that it would work with and he listed a few, but he said they were not allowed to put the list up on the web site.
Whoah! So that's why I spend 6.5 hours to find out your product does not work. [...]
Others, save yourself the headache, buy someone else's product.

This thing has NO range...It could be 2ft from a router and still register weak signals. Also DON'T even try to use the driver disc it comes with...not readable on one computers' drive and readable but has too many errors from another. I had to go to their website and dl the driver install setup program....and that didn't work...I THEN had to install the driver update. Drivers seem to work fine. The interface GUI is CRAP as well.

D-Link DWL-7100AP Wireless Access Point w/SNMP, 802.11a/g, 108Mbps Review

D-Link DWL-7100AP Wireless Access Point w/SNMP, 802.11a/g, 108Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It had the latest firmware and wireless protocols installed, and the web-based configuration interface has well organized pages of setup options. The Help pages are actually helpful. As with any networking device it is good to be a little familiar with TCP/IP so you can handle minor annoyances like giving your computer a temporary static IP address in the same subnet range as the DWL-7100AP so you can communicate with it during configuration (This is explained in the manual). Afterwards, I was able to change my computer back to dynamic IP addressing, and still access the configuration pages of the DWL-7100AP. It will work just fine right out of the box with default settings, but as with any wireless access point, better security can be had by creating your own SSID name, disabling broadcast of the SSID, changing the default user ID and password, using MAC filtering so that only your computers will be accepted by the access point, and enabling data encryption. The DWL-7100AP allows you to use two kinds of WPA encryption, which is much more secure than WEP. I highly recommend this product and it's well-written manual. Some users report having their connection dropped frequently. I found that interference from 2.4 Gigahertz portable telephones in my house was the culprit for dropped connections on the 802.11g band, which is in the same frequency band as the phones. Since I switched to the 802.11a band (5 Gigahertz) I very seldom have dropped connections from the DWL-7100AP.

D-Link, the networking industry leader, delivers another innovative and versatile solution in wireless connectivity with the D-Link AirPremierTM DWL-7100AP Wireless Access Point. This dual-band (2.4GHz, 5GHz), tri-mode (802.11a, b, g) Access Point provides the most bandwidth coverage available in an AP. Multiple wireless clients can connect to the DWL-7100AP using both A and G wireless standards and any of its 11 non-overlapping channels to transfer data at speeds of up to 108 Mbps. Network Administrators can easily integrate various wireless managements with the DWL-7100AP Wireless Distribution System (WDS), offering modes in AP, Point-to-Point Bridge, Point-to-Multipoint Bridges, AP Client, and Repeater, allowing users to gain controls beyond a sole AP.

Hello,
I just thought that I lean people a hand. The chipset for this product is made by Ralink Corp. of Taiwan.
Both OWC and Newer Technologies do not make the drivers for this device available for download for some reason (at least from a public URL and even then they are out of date). The drivers on the CD you got are probably out of date.
You can download new drivers for this device from the Ralink Corp. web site.
The chipset in the nmaxpower is an RT2860.

Hope that helps people.

Picked this item up for $23. Actulllay picked 6 of them up. All had the newest firmware and all are rock solid regular G router. Airlink and Airlink101 are OEM producers and you'll find their components in many of the more expensive brands out there. I was surpised at both the features and performance.
This is a good buy and expect to upgrade the firmware upon purchase. As with any router, ALWAYS CHECK DSLREPORTS Hardware Forums @ < http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all > before purchasing or upgrading connecting hardware.

Clear 4G Mobile USB Modem Review

Clear 4G Mobile USB Modem
Average Reviews:

They don't actually have a picture of the device. It looks nothing like the sony ericsson clam shell they show. But, the product they sent me was brand new, and indeed the CLEAR 4G mobile usb.
It is completely compatible with CLEAR's "high" speed internet service.
I took a star off because:
a) they don't have a good picture of what you're receiving.
b) This item works with Clear's service, but Clear's services are... mediocre. (more below)
For the Clear 6mb max download speed, I actually get 500kb max download speed. So, you should divide their "max" speed by about 12 to get the actual max speeds you'll be getting. Also, if you read their terms, they actually spell out that they are allowed to have times of zero service, and that they are allowed to have no idea why.
So far however, it's worked fine for me. I can stream Hulu videos, I can watch youtube videos, I can download large documents and work on google documents while experiencing no lag. It works about as well as dsl, just more finicky, and not sharable... on the plus side: it's mobile! So it works great if you're living alone, don't play online games, and have access to a library in case the service cuts out on you (like me).

SMC7004VWBR Barricade Cable/DSL router w/ 4-port 10/100Mbps and 802.11b 11 Mbps Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been putting off the purchase of a router for a while now, but after my ISP was irked at the fact that I was logging in with two simultaneous PPPoE connections using an old hub, I really had no choice.
My college offers wireless access on campus, and I had already purchased an 802.11b card, but I didn't think I'd really have a need for wireless access at home. In fact, I was looking for a wired router at first, until I found the SMC7004VWBR on another site (before Amazon began offering it).
I had read many of the reviews about Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear products, and SMC was the one that had fewer complaints. I was skeptical at first considering I had purchased it for $98 including a $10 rebate, and figured that perhaps I would end up getting what I paid for. After about 3 weeks, I haven't had anyting to complain about yet.
The router's features include Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Denial of Service (DoS) protection, email alerts, parental control, integrated Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through support, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and hacker logging options. Turn on the email alerts and you'll see several alerts in your inbox everyday.
Setup was a breeze. I merely plugged in my desktop into one of the 4 wired ports, plugged in my DSL modem into the WAN port, and accessed the IP address specified in the manual. (The manual is provided on the included CD as well as online).
Even though the quick-start guide asks you to use the CD to set up your connection, you can go ahead and access the setup page via your web browser, as what type of operating system you're using is irrelevant and you don't need any kind of software loaded on your computer.
The setup includes both a quick EZ version (as in 3 clicks and you're done), and a more advanced version. I first used the quick setup just to make sure everything worked, but I then went into the advanced setup to set up my wireless encryption, firewall and NAT settings, etc. The setup page also includes a nice help file that will explain any terms you're not familiar with.
Performance has been exceptionally good. The signal doesn't fade too much as I travel from room to room in my house with my laptop.
Perhaps my only complaint is that there is no easy way to mount it on the wall (although aspiring engineers like myself will find a way).
Overall I think this is one of the best purchases I've made so far, and recommend this to budget-minded (read: college students) individual looking for a feature-rich router with wireless capabilities.

The Barricade wireless cable/DSL broadband router (SMC7004VWBR) is a platform-independent multifunctional router that combines a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch, an 802.11b wireless access point, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall security, network management, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through support in one convenient device.
The wireless Barricade router is the first router in its class to offer an integrated SPI firewall. This firewall provides protection against hacker invasions--such as Denial of Service attacks--by analyzing individual data packets as they pass through the Barricade, to ensure that only authorized packets are allowed access to the network. To control network access, parents or business owners can block certain Web sites by entering either a URL or just a keyword of a Web site. In addition to these incredible features, this addition to the Barricade family provides hacker prevention and logging functionalities; for example, when a hacker attempts to access your network, the Barricade can alert you via e-mail so you can take appropriate action.
The wireless Barricade provides a 10/100 Mbps WAN port for high-speed integration into your network. Supporting NAT, the Barricade can provide simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 PCs using a single, purchased IP address. To manage these connections, the Barricade has a built-in DHCP server to auto assign IP addresses to devices on your network. To install this device, simply place the EZ 3-Click Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive and in minutes you will be surfing the Web. Using the Web-based management system you can configure this router to handle IP routing and port forwarding through the virtual server option. For additional management, this router also has a full-featured access control option. The integrated feature allows you to filter traffic through your network based on IP and MAC address.
For wireless connectivity, the wireless Barricade supports 802.11b communication at data rates of 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps. To secure this wireless connection, the Barricade supports MAC address filtering and both 64- and 128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). This integrated wireless technology allows you to connect to your network from up to 1,000 feet away.
SMC's Barricade wireless cable/DSL broadband router is a comprehensive networking solution for PC, Mac, and Linux users, and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Combine all of these features, functionality, and affordability with SMC's award-winning technical support and service, and you have the perfect network device for any situation.

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue)

I converted my LaserJet 5MP (what a workhorse!) to wireless with this unit. It communicates well with the Ubuntu and Windows Vista laptops in the house. Wireless printing is much more convenient than print sharing since you don't have to turn on an extra machine to act as a server.
The documentation could be better and you need a Windows computer (or WINE) to get this running because the web interface doesn't work out of the box. But it's been running fine for weeks now that I've installed it.
I haven't had a problem with signal strength at all and my printer is upstairs while my computer is often downstairs.
I would recommend this adapter with the caveat that it's easy to set up if you know the basics of home networks. From the other reviews and comments, I'd say that if you don't know what an IP address is or how to install a networked printer on your OS, you might want to look elsewhere for something simpler to install.

Super Slim External IEEE 802.11b/g/n,150Mbps,USB 2.0 Wifi Wireless LAN Adapter Review

The driver for this is located on a 3.5" disk. I don't have a drive for that. I've spent the last hour googling. "Ver:W05U" is on the CD, that turns up nothing. RT3070 (also on the CD) turns up some things, including this page, but still no driver.
[...]
Microsoft does not recognize the device, so I can't seem to find anything generic for it.
Maybe if there's someone who buys it who has a 3.5" drive you could find a way to upload the driver someplace so that others who make the mistake of buying this can have access to it?

HP Photosmart Plus Wireless All-in-One Printer (CD035A#ABA) Review

HP Photosmart Plus Wireless All-in-One Printer (CD035A#ABA)

Contrary to other reports here this printer was very easy to set up and start using. I am a Mac user and installed it very easily before I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Of course, everyone's computer is set up differently and will react differently to installed hardware, but I found that if I followed the easy setup instructions then setup was a breeze. In fact, I probably didn't even need to use the HP software because when I plugged the printer into my iMac running Leopard 10.5.8, OS X picked it up immediately and set it up for me -- scanner and all. What's more, I have two Windows PC-based laptops and they both saw and installed the printer wirelessly in a snap.
All-in-all, I was very surprised just how easy the printer was to set up. I was anticipating it to be more difficult than HP claimed. One hint to easy setup is to hook it up to your computer by USB first. Then, set up the wireless features via your desktop. Later you can disconnect it and use it exclusively wireless.
