Well, I was ready to tackle a series of issues, as networking or trying to get anything connected in my house is usually a heavy reading affair. I plugged in and that was it. i was sure it was a trap of some kind... but truly it was that easy. It worked for me with no set up, no wep codes ( i was on wi fi previously ) just connect and go. I don't really like writing reviews , but i had to for this because it was so awesome for me.
My Steps:
Connect your dsl router on one. ( in my case it was on the opposite side of the house )
Plug in 2nd one in the power jack closest to the device you'd like to hook up. shazam. done.
the end.

D-Link D-Life Internet Surveillance Camera Starter Kit (DHA-390) Review

D-Link D-Life Internet Surveillance Camera Starter Kit (DHA-390)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't fathom why anybody would actually buy this product. Across the board, everything about it is just plain wrong.
Powerline networking is a relatively good idea, but it looks like the marketing department at D-Link got together one day to see what kind of products they could cram it in to. With this surveillance camera, the implementation is sloppy and unnecessary.
Keep in mind too, that Powerline networking isn't always as straightforward as plugging in a "wall wort" and connecting ethernet to it. If you're using any multi-outlet adapters, or if your home's wiring isn't nearly pristine, the experience can be almost as painful as just running CAT5 cable through your house.
The camera itself is massive compared to any web cam made in the past decade, and assembling it to the base is needlessly complicated for what it is. On the plus side, the base is quite heavy, so it isn't going to be knocked down easily. On the other hand, you absolutely must use wall anchors if you plan to mount the camera on a wall. And given the size of this camera, it's so large and obvious that your baby and pets are the only ones who aren't going to notice it.
Perhaps the most mind boggling issue I have with this kit, is that you can't host it yourself. To see what's on the camera, you have to go to D-Link's site (which is simply not possible if you aren't using Windows and Internet Explorer) and create an account. Once you've done that, you can only see the camera through D-Link's site.
I'm not typically a paranoid person, but that really raised an "Are you serious?" from me. Why the heck would you have a camera in your home broadcasting to D-Link's site? What stops D-Link from peeking in? And perhaps more importantly, what happens if D-Link goes under, or decides that they're just not interested in offering the service anymore? More likely than not, you'll be left with expensive, useless junk.
Don't get me wrong, I can see the value in offering a camera that "just works", but not having the option to host it yourself, and being locked in to Internet Explorer are ridiculous barriers.

Panasonic BL-C111A Network Camera Wired Review

Panasonic BL-C111A Network Camera Wired
Average Reviews:

First, let me compliment Panasonic on its customer support. It may take a few minutes to get through, but they do know what they are doing. I needed them twice during setup and they came through both times.
Pros: This is a decent camera at a great price; decent low light performance; relatively easy setup; free web access hosted by Panasonic; compatible with any cell phone with a web browser (pics only); motion sensor; reliable.
Cons: slow shutter speed (anything moving is blurry) and really does not do 30 FPS as advertised.
Overall - recommended as a reasonable cost home monitoring system.

D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server Review

D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server
Average Reviews:

I purchased a refurbished model for around [$$$] and everything was in perfect order. The old admin password had already been removed so there was no problem accessing configuration.
The D-Link DI-704P is very easy to hook up. I especially like the idea of having all the wiring in back and the LED's in front. As far as documentation; it is all included on the cd in pdf format. I suppose this keeps the cost down.
Getting things up and running took about half an hour, mostly because of one small undocumented glitch. It just would not connect. The problem was easily solved after reviewing the FAQ's on D-Link's web site. All I had to do was run winipcfg and release the current settings, then renew. After that just power down everything (computer, router, cablemodem). Then power the cablemodem back up and let it cycle through its procedures; power on the router; then the computer. All works perfect.
One of the main reason for choosing this unit was the print server feature. The software installed flawlessly, and reconfiguring my printer to direct it towards the D-Link print server was easy (HP DeskJet 420). Printing functions normally, so now my computer does not have to be on 24/7 to act as the print server.
I rate this product 5 stars for value and performance, but minus one star because the faq answer should have been included in the original documentation. So maybe a 4 1/2 star rating is more appropriate.

The DI-704P broadband router is a cost effective solution giving you the privilege of sharing your printer on the network without the need to purchase another print server. The router has a built-in 4-port switch plus a parallel port to share a printer. It has MAC filtering to allow you to allow or deny computers on the network access to the Internet. The router also serves as a firewall along with Network Address Translation which allows you to share a single IP address to protect you from outside intruders gaining access to your private network. I live in an apartment and found myself in a horrible situation. My home computer and router are in my office while my XBox is in the living room. I use to run a 50 foot ethernet cable to connect my Xbox to the router. Once I married I was forced to stop this practice. I started looking for a solution that would not only allow me continue to play my games around the world, but my wife also had a workstation in the bedroom that needed to be connected. I'm not a fan of wireless because of security issues. Therefore, I bought this product. It works great!!!! It was plug and play (netork). I had no issues. This product is fast. I'm on comcast broadband and I would say I'm running at 90-98% of the speed I was at before from any of the access points. This product also allowed me to save space around my desktop by connecting the modem (and first powerline module) behind the tv. Remember you need at least two modules to start the network. For instance I bought four. One for the main computer, one for the bedroom computer, one for the xbox, and the fourth one which connect behind the tv and provides the connection (to cable modem) for everything. A word of note the only device that needs the drives loaded is the computer. If you are hooking up a device like XBox or Tivo all you need to do is plug it up.

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

Netgear Powerline Ethernet Adapter (XE602) Review

Netgear Powerline Ethernet Adapter (XE602)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an IT professional, I was skeptical like everyone else about this technology. We have a big problem with Wireless reception in the house (especially when using the cordless telephone) so I bought a pair of the Netgear XE602's to extend the DSL access downstairs.
I bought the Netgear over the Linksys after reading a review online showing the performance of a Netgear-to-Netgear powerline network runs circles around one that uses Linksys products.
Well I plugged it in, and it just started working. There is no configuration required-- there are no switches, buttons, knobs, software, or drivers required to make it work. No configuration screens, no clumsy web interfaces, no serial cables. You plug it in to the wall outlet, then plug it into your PC or hub, and that's it. We are getting multi-megabit speeds in a house where Wireless just wasn't reliable.
There is a lot of debate online about household devices that cause interference with Powerline networking. We have four computers, several TV's, air conditioning, etc. and have noticed no problems at all.
The Netgear is bundled with some security software that I haven't looked at. There is a concern that your Powerline network may bleed into your neighbor's house. I'm not too concerned and don't want the complexity anyway.
This is a very attractive alternative to Wireless if you don't need the roaming capability. The Netgear product is stylish, simple, and effective.

Apple Time Capsule MB996LL/A 2TB (SIM Dualband) Review

Apple Time Capsule MB996LL/A 2TB (SIM Dualband)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is basically three products: an airport extreme wireless router, a networked drive, and finally, with Leopard, a networked backup system. Overall, it's a very good product, but there are some serious limitation one should be aware of.
As a router, it is fantastic. Typical Apple ease of use, with all configuration done by a very intuitive GUI application.
Unfortunately, it's not a great network drive. The drive appears to be internally connected using a very slow USB connection. You will find that even with a computer connected via Gb/s ethernet, transfer speeds will be limited to around 5-6 MB/s, tops. If you connect two Macs via fast ethernet, you can often get over 40 MB/s transfer speeds, so this is a rather large disappointment, especially for a device which will be getting a lot of use if you use Time Machine.
Time Machine is great in theory, and can act as a form of automatic version control, but it has a few issues. First, it is a file-based differential backup. That means, for example, that if even a single bit of a 1 GB file is changed, the ENTIRE file gets backed up. Not only does this take a lot of time, it quickly depletes your backup drive because the same data is added to the disk repeatedly. To get around this, you have to explicitly exclude backing up large files that are often changed. Good candidates for exclusion are Mail and iDisk caches, as well as virtual machine disk images.
There have also been numerous reports of Time Machine backups being susceptible to corruption. I've experienced this once, myself, after a backup was canceled, so I can vouch that it happens. However, the problems can often be fixed by deleting the last backup. The next backup will take a long time as the computer must scan the full disk again, but the backups then continue on normally after that. I have yet to have Time Machine get my backups into a state where they can't be fixed by this method.
Time Machine backups have their place, and come in very handy to recover accidentally deleted files. However, they should only be considered part of a larger backup scheme. They probably shouldn't be trusted for a full recovery, and won't be of any help if your computer's drive completely fails, anyway. (How are you going to run Time Machine if you can't boot your computer? EDIT: As pointed out by the commenter, if your drive fails completely, you can still reinstall the system from the DVD and then run the Transfer Assistant to recover your files from the Time Capsule. It's not as good as a complete backup, as Transfer Assistant is notorious for breaking applications, but you won't lose your work.) As such, you should image your entire drive regularly, in addition to using Time Machine.

Acer Aspire easyStore AH342-U2T2H Home Server (Black) Review

Acer Aspire easyStore AH342-U2T2H Home Server (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
QUICK SUMMARY: Acer's AH340/AH341/AH342 servers, when configured correctly, provide home users and small offices a powerful solution for automated backups, restores, remote access and media server capability. However, configuring this server can be challenging, and Acer makes little effort to help its customers. Microsoft's Windows Home Server is a terrific -- and stable! -- operating system. Add a 2nd hard drive, too, and you've got redundant data storage. Cautiously recommended.
*** SPECIAL NOTE as of December 31, 2010: If you're in the market for a Windows Home Server, you should know about a few announcements that occurred in November, 2010. One, Hewlett-Packard is getting out of the Windows Home Server market. They won't be making HP Mediasmart home servers any more. HP sold the most number of Windows Home Servers, and people are speculating whether this move will effectively kill the Windows Home Server market. Two, Microsoft announced that they are removing Drive Extender from the next version of Windows Home Server (Version 2, code named Vail, which will be released in 2011; Drive Extender technology is included with WHS Version 1, which runs these Acer servers). Drive Extender is a critical piece of technology that allows you to easily add more hard drives to your server, have a single pool of storage for all your data, and it provides for data redundancy (so if one hard drive crashes, your data is kept on a 2nd hard drive, provided you've added at least one more hard drive to your server). Microsoft will provide full support to this version of WHS until January, 2013, and then it will not be supported any longer - no bug fixes or security enhancements.
*** SPECIAL NOTE as of February 6, 2010: McAfee Antivirus automatically updated their software to Version 5, which totally screwed up my server! STAY AWAY from McAfee!! If you buy this server, immediately use Remote Desktop to open the server's Control Panel, choose Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall McAfee from your server! McAfee cannot be trusted! Read the end of this review to learn more.
What follows is my review of the Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server, based upon my personal experience with it since purchasing one in late June 2009. For 2010, Acer has refreshed their Windows Home Server lineup using faster RAM and the Intel Atom D410 and D510 CPUs which have a slight bump in processor speed and, for the D510, more L2 cache. Other than this, the AH341 and AH342 servers are *exactly* the same as the older AH340 server.

*********************************************************
If you read this very long review, you'll learn quite a bit about this Acer server and the Windows Home Server operating system. You'll also read about some minor issues I've run into, and how to workaround those issues. I've owned this server for six months now, and it's been a good experience overall. If you buy this Acer server, you're not going to get much help from Acer. So for any problems, your own technical know-how and the Internet community are your best sources of help.
In short, I bought this Acer server and successfully installed it on my home network. In very large part, it's doing what it's supposed to be doing, that is, it automatically backs up my four-computer home network, and it gives me remote access to my data, too. Thus far, I have only one small, re-occurring issue which I'll share in a moment.
The out-of-box experience is pretty good, but don't expect much by way of documentation. You'll need to look elsewhere to understand all the ins-and-outs of using Windows Home Server (WHS). Although the "Quick Start" booklet seems very thick, it's actually got the instructions in about five or six languages, and so when you read the English section (if you read English), you'll only see how to set-up the server with a little narrative and black-and-white screenshots that are difficult to read. Fortunately, the setup is pretty easy, and they do include a larger poster with just the absolute essentials (which is what I used), and the poster was good enough. In short, plug-in the ethernet cable from the server to your wireless router, and you're in business. The server is heavier than I expected, and *quieter* than I expected (much less noisy than my desktop computer).
Then, you install a CD in one of your available networked computers to install the Server Console on the installed-from computer, and to begin configuring your new server. One things stands out in my mind here...the instructions say turn-on your server and wait until the blue LED light is glowing steady. Trouble is, there are about seven or eight lights glowing at this point (one light for each of the four disk drive bays, a power-on light, a network light, an "information" light, and possibly a disk activity light), and some of the lights glow purple, not blue. Suffice it to say that you should wait a few minutes just to make sure everything is settled before you start server configuring.
The server configuration went pretty well, I thought. Do a Google search for "Acer Windows Home Server Review" and you'll find a website where someone has very helpfully documented the entire install process using color screenshots of each step. The installed server console program (running on one of your networked computers) is not resizeable and won't maximize, which is annoying. You can use Remote Desktop Connection to actually login to your new server (if you're not familiar with Remote Desktop Connection, it lets you connect to another computer from the computer you're using).
In a very short time, my old, quirky Gateway desktop computer (circa 2003, XP Pro, 2Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD) was recognized by the new Acer server, and I was creating user accounts on the server that match my desktop computer (you should use a password on your user accounts, and be sure to specify the same password on the server as what you use for the desktop/laptop account).
At this point, I had my first problem -- the Gateway's connection to the server would get lost inexplicably during the first attempt at a manual backup. Long story short, I completely reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP-3 on the Gateway desktop, reinstalled the Windows Home Server Console, and was able to begin getting successful backups until I got to the point where I restored all my digital media files (using Acronis and an external hard drive -- not using the new Acer server) and then tried a WHS backup, which fails inexplicably. Could be my aging and quirky Gateway hardware, but it's a fresh install of XP and the error messaging is vague and unhelpful.
Notably, my three laptops (running XP Media Edition w/1GB RAM, Vista Ultimate w/2GB, and Windows 7 Ultimate w/4GB of RAM) backed up their contents perfectly -- no troubles at all, even backing up a very large VMWare virtual hard drive (which is a single, physical, 20GB file on my Vista laptop).
Very cool feature: This Acer will wake-up either a sleeping or hibernating computer to do the backup in the middle of the night! So, don't turn-off your computers, just put them in sleep/hibernate mode so they don't use much power, but will still get backed-up. (Note: WHS does *not* use Wake On LAN technology, which doesn't work reliably in all environments - the WHS technical strategy for waking sleeping/hibernating computers works much better than WOL). The WHS backups are incremental, so you can return to any previous point in time during a restore -- you aren't limited just to what was done last night. This is handy if you want to restore your computer to the way it worked one month ago, when it was working reliably (you'd probably do a 2nd restore, then, to load all your most recent data following the system restore).
To get remote access to work correctly, you need to modify your ISP's modem setups (your ISP's modem most likely has a built-in router, too). Choose "Bridged over Ethernet" protocol in the modem setups, and then configure your wireless router that's attached to the modem so it is a PPPoE connection (you'll need your ISP's account name and password for the router configuration). Once I got through this headache, I was able to gain remote access to my server -- very cool feature!! (BTW, don't count on any technical help by AT&T/Bellsouth - you won't get any that's helpful to you). You may also have trouble if your ISP blocks certain ports, like ports 80 and 443. Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was sold on the LG BD300 since I first heard about it a year ago and have been waiting for it ever since. I was planning on getting it until I heard about the Samsung BD-P2500 and figured I should at least research it a little before buying the LG, and boy am I glad I did!! That's when I found out Samsung made a sister model to the 2500, the BD-P2550. The 2500 and 2550 are identical except except for one feature, the 2550 adds Pandora Internet Radio. A small difference, you might think, but Pandora takes the purchase to a whole other level of enjoyment! As you can deduce, I ended up buying the Samsung 2550 and absolutely LOVE it! But since the 2500 and 2550 are so similar, and I've encountered a lot of people trying to decide between Samsung 2500/2550 and LGBD300, I figured I'd add my 2cents.
The main things that turned me off LG and onto Samsung were:
1- Samsung BD-P2550 has Pandora. I wasn't sure if I'd use this service or not so went to the website to check it out. I have to say, I really like the service and have been making good use of it via the Samsung. Sure, you can listen to Pandora on your computer, and maybe even hook up your computer to your home stereo system. But having it there and ready to go on the Samsung has been great! I really love it and love that I can listen on my home theater setup. I also have TVersity streaming to my home theater setup via my DirecTV receiver, and its possible TVersity can pick up Pandora too, but it would be lacking the same interface available on the Samsung BD-P2550, and the menus look great on my plasma TV. The Pandora feature alone beats the LG BD300 in my opinion, and the little extra money for the Samsung is more than worth it to me.
2- LG has NO internal flash memory while the Samsung has 1gb flash. This is useful for BD Live features and makes the experience easier and more enjoyable.
3-Samsung's video upscaling of regular DVDs is SUPERB! I'm very picky about video quality and I thought the picture looked spectacular. This is due to the superior chipset inside the Samsung, which LG is lacking. And naturally, Blu Ray disks look awesome too.
I admit, I never tried the LG so I'm not making a true test-drive comparison here. All I can say is I was totally sold on the LG and waiting a year for its release, but in the end, I'm glad I picked Samsung BD-P2550 at the last minute.
A word about Firmware updates:
Updates are easiest if you hook up your player to the internet via the network port on the back. This is also the only way to get BD Live content, so you may want to hook it up that way if you can. The player automatically configures the network settings and connects to the internet automatically. My player did need a firmware update, but the process was very simple. Just select the upgrade from the player's setup menu and it takes care of the installation by itself. The upgrade only took about 20min, then the player rebooted and I was good to go. No issues. No hassle. No sweat.
I have to give the Samsung BD-P2550 Blu-Ray player top marks. It's truly awesome and I'm glad I got it. I bought a Toshiba HD player last year before the bottom fell out on HD-DVD and then returned to Amazon for a full refund. I didn't mind returning it since most the disks I tried playing locked up and wouldn't play. But I was disappointed HD-DVD died. But in the end, everything worked out for the best and I'm very happy with this Samsung. And no disk lockups as with the HD-DVD I tried last year.
Incidentally, Netflix streaming actually looks pretty good considering it's not HD. And soon they'll be streaming HD quality, so that'll be cool to try. Maybe I won't even need to rent disks anymore and will just stream everything. Also, the player's menus and interface are clean and easy to use and it was a breeze to setup the player with my Harmony 1000 remote.
So between Netflix, Pandora, superior DVD upscaling and superb Blu-Ray picture, it's hard to beat the Samsung BD-P2550. It's a giant leap into future technology and will remain cutting edge for years to come. It's awesome!! Go for it!!!!

Netgear PS110 10/100 Print Server with 2 Parallel Ports Review

Netgear PS110 10/100 Print Server with 2 Parallel Ports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The instructions don't mention Windows XP. The web site mentions it, barely, but wihhout instructions. I wasted an hour trying to do it myself, then an hour with tech support. Finally got it working, but only because I know about IP addresses, network configuration, etc. I imagine it would be easy to setup if they bothered to provide instructions for WIndows XP, and it may be easy with older versions of Windows. But XP users should stay away. And wonder why NetGear can't provide any attempt at instructions a year after XP's release.
Once I got it working, it works fine. The only hassle was setting it up.

Netgear's PS-110 print server lets you share printers among all users on the network without complex configurations or having to dedicate a PC for printer serving. It connects directly to the network and can be placed anywhere for convenient access. With its built-in network hub, the Netgear PS110 provides connectivity solutions and file, print, and resource sharing. It can also connect two parallel printers, such as a color printer with a high-speed laser printer.
The Netgear PS110 attaches to a 10 or 100 Mbps hub or switch, providing seamless transition from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet. It has one speed-sensing 10/100 Mbps printer port and a pair of IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel network ports. The extensive LED screen highlights all links and activities. The unit also provides simultaneous support for Unix, Windows, and NetWare clients. TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI network protocols are supported as well.
FirstGear, a Windows-based configuration tool, enables simple installation. Flash EPROM lets you download upgrades as they become available.Netgear offers a five-year warranty on the print server, while the power adapter is covered for a year.

HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 All In One Printer Review

HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 All In One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third HP All-In-One Officejet printer. The first was the r80xi, the second the 6110. I had not been particularly enthused about the HP 6110, which after 5 years broke down with constant jamming. Every other brand that I looked at, however, also seemed to have their own flaws and potential reliability problems, and so I decided to stick with the HP series, mainly because the cartridges are so readily available at Costco. I have not had good luck with remanufactured ink cartridges. I strongly considered the Canon Pixma printers since a lot of people seemed to like them, but the constant complaint that the Canon printers are designed to not print when a single ink color runs low stopped me. This printer, like all other previous HP printers I have owned, continues to print when one color runs low, so you don't have to replace the cartridge right away if you don't need it. (The low ink indicators tend to come on well before the cartridges actually run out of ink, which would be another knock against Canon's systems).
The printer that I actually have is the HP L7555, which I purchased from Costco. From the specifications, the L7555 is the same printer as the L7590. HP has historically given large volume discounts to sell printers at Costco and then re-named the discounted printers sold at Costco (e.g. the r80 became the r80xi) so as to appease its other retailers. The L7555/L7590 come with the optional two-sided printing attachment, which is not included with the L7580. All three of these printers have wired network capability only (wireless is an optional accessory).
I would note that there are multiple separate listings on Amazon.com right now for the L7680 and L7780, and the photos and specs are quite confusing as to what the differences are, but it appears that these other models come with wireless networking, two sided printing, additional paper trays, and other features like Direct Digital Filing, etc. The L7600 and L7700 series come with legal size scanner glass instead of the letter/A4 size scanner glass for the L7500 series and so have a slightly larger upper body frame (legal size scanning/faxing on the L7500 series is done by feeding through the ADF). The L7780 has a color display instead of a black and white LCD display.
I use this printer as a common family/home office printer/scanner for four home computers. So some of the complaints of other people in the many printer reviews on Amazon.com don't apply to me. The computers all run Windows XP, and so Vista or Mac compatibility are not issues (drivers for Vista and Mac OS are included).
Initially, I set this printer up with my old USB 4-port switch (I have four computers at home on a home network). The L7590/7555 did not recognize the USB 1.0 switch that I had been using, so I got a new 4-port USB 2.0 switch (software switchable), which did work to switch printing and scanning between the computers. The only problem was that the computer that was "on" with the printer would freeze up during the boot process unless the USB port was unplugged or shut off.
So, I decided to put this Ethernet-capable printer on my home network. To do this, I had to expand beyond the four-port MN-100 router that I had. I got a D-Link DGL-4100 4-port gigabit router and DGS-2205 5-port switch. These hooked up easily with the Ethernet port on the L7590/7555. You have to put the HP setup CD back into every single computer on the network and re-install this printer for the network again even though the drivers have been loaded for the USB connection.
I am not using this printer to print high quality photos, although the three color cartridge system does look capable of doing decent photo color printing similar to previous Officejets.
Unlike the previous Officejets, this one comes with two replaceable inkjet heads. Previously, HP had built the inkjet heads into the disposable ink cartridges, which undoubtedly increased the cost of the cartridges. However, it is not entirely clear how long these replaceable printheads are designed to last. A search of the Internet suggested that the HP printheads are not designed to last for the life of the printer as the Canon printheads are, and possibly last only for every tenth ink cartridge or so. Stay tuned for an update on this issue.
The printer uses the 88 series of color cartridges (4 total - yellow, magenta, cyan, and black cartridges), and the 88 printheads (black-yellow, and magenta-cyan).
Pros:
1. Much more economical ink usage than the 6110. HOWEVER, you have to manually reset the default Windows printer parameters on every computer attached to this printer to take full advantage of this feature. The "Normal" default print setting gulps color ink at a prodigious rate - the color prints come out with the same depth of color as the "Best" setting for the 6110. So I am not at all sure that if you intend to use this printer to print a lot of photo quality prints how economical it will turn out to be. The "Draft" mode uses less ink but the color prints are not photo quality.
2. The printer does have a full range of manually adjustable settings in the "Advanced" tab for Printer Preferences in Windows that allow you to really dial down the ink usage and also presumably allows you to tweak the color ink usage for photos to acceptable levels. Black and white documents come out looking very usable with the ink settings at the very lowest levels.
3. Much faster than the 6110 for printing, scanning, etc. ADF works pretty good for scanning multiple documents.
4. Wired network setup fairly easy on Windows XP.
Cons:
1. The very first time the L7555/L7590 powers up, it takes 20 minutes to fully initialize. Later, if you turn off or unplug this printer, it takes about two minutes to initialize. Don't ever turn this baby off!
2. Installation of the driver software is also really slow, with a lot of popups requiring user interaction to continue the installation. If you have to load this software into several computers, it takes a while.
3. It only recognizes USB 2.0. It will not recognize USB 1.0 plugs. A USB 2.0 4-port switch that I used initially created hangups during the boot process for the compute that was "on".
4. The ADF feeder tray is still attached by way of two flimsy tabs. This is similar to the HP 6110 - one of the tabs on the 6110 ADF tray broke off after somebody set a heavy pile of stuff on top of it.
5. Loud. Probably the loudest of the three Officejets that I have owned. But this is probably because it is also the fastest of the three.
6. Footprint is 65% larger than the 6110 in square inches. It still fits on the same desktop space, just a tighter squeeze.
7. The wired (and wireless) networking only work for up to five computers, according to the manual. I have not tested this.
All in all, the Cons are minor complaints. This is a good quality printer, priced cheaper than the 6110 had been five years ago, but MUCH BETTER. Printer prices have dropped dramatically, as manufacturers have discovered that the money is in the selling of printer cartridges, and so the best part of this printer is its much more economical use of ink. But you have to make sure to adjust the default settings for ink usage. And I am still waiting to see how long these replaceable printheads last, to see if they contribute to the cost of printing. Addendum: I liked this All-In-One printer so much that I recently bought another one. Unfortunately, after a week or so of use, this one started having frequent paper feed jams, especially with two sided printing. And the auto-feed tray fed the papers in crooked. Fortunately, following my own advice, I'd gotten this printer at Costco like the first one (Costco rebrands this as the model L7555), and I returned it well within Costco's generous 90 day return period, and got another one, which so far is working fine. Remember, the price points are so important nowadays that quality control has really gone downhill and EVERY electronics manufacturer ships out some lemons. So strongly consider the return policy of any place that you buy your electronics from.
I've discovered another annoying aspect of the printer software when used on a network instead of a straight USB hookup - if you change routers or exchange printers, because each printer has its own unique network ID burned into its chips, you have to re-install the entire HP software package on every computer on your network. Simply re-installing the software on top of an existing installation doesn't work - you have to manually uninstall it first (the quickest way is to use the "Uninstall" option on the HP CD startup menu - this will uninstall all of the software in one sweep). This of course deletes all the special Windows Printer settings to reduce ink use, etc., that you have set up in your Printer Preferences, so you have to re-do all of that again also for each computer on your network. I have gone through this rigamarole three times now, changing from a D-link to a 2-Wire router/modem, exchanging printers, and then changing to an Actiontec router-modem.
With the Actiontec router/modem, the HP installation disc for some reason did not automatically detect the printer during installation for two of our computers, even though the Actiontec network browser page showed it was active. I had to manually identify the printer and input the printer IP address/MAC address. I tried using HP's latest update software, v.8, hoping it would work better, and it wouldn't identify or allow me to manually install this printer at all. So back to the v.7.0.0 CD - at least it works with manual installation. - HP doesn't list this version on their website, so don't lose your installation CD!
HP sure could make this re-installation process a WHOLE LOT better and easier!

SonicWALL TZ 170 25 Node VPN Firewall (01-SSC-5558) Review

SonicWALL TZ 170 25 Node VPN Firewall (01-SSC-5558)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is for firmware v3102-Standard_OS of this device. Keep in mind that this product offers many optional services and upgrades which can significantly increase the functionality and price.
The TZ170 has a nice, easy-to-navigate web-mgmt interface. It strikes me as a polished, quality OS. Overall features are consistent with Linksys and Netgear models costing about half as much. The unit I tested got very hot on the bottom-center, so use in a well-cooled area. The case is plastic, but well-made.
Now the flaw: this unit, like many similar models, allows you to create access-rules to permit traffic (usually incoming) on certain ports. There is a long list of pre-defined services and you can create custom-services also. Each service has a check-box for "Enable logging", so it would seem all you need to do is check the corresponding log-category and you're good to go - NOPE. It turns out that the unit will only log dropped packets , or as the admin guide says, "blocked connections". I spent a long call to Sonicwall tech support, during which time the rep went and talked to his manager, to confirm this lack of functionality.
This means, for the power-user or admin who wants their daily log-email to show the previous night's successful PPTP or Remote-Desktop pass-through connections, they are out of luck. Some shops will not care, but as most of the entry-level firewalls I am familiar with have this functionality, I was shocked to find out this unit could not do it.
If you do not need pass-through logging, this unit is worth considering.

ZyXEL PLA-401 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Wall-plug Adapter Review

ZyXEL PLA-401 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Wall-plug Adapter
Average Reviews:

The ZyXEL is working great. I purchased it to get the highest bitstream I could get to match my G network. The trick to get it to work flawlessly is to first get the one working that you are plugging into your router. Then plug in the 2nd one in the same room. You have to get all three lights working(plug in your computer or printer, etc.,to get the third light to turn on). Once you have that working within the same room with your router I could move to the location I really wanted to use it at the other end of the house. As I watch my downloads to the newly wired computer I see no loss in BPS the download speed is the same as for my wireless and wired equipment on my G network. I have no idea how it would work for High Definition. When I need to expand my network (without Wireless capability I'll just buy the singleton)..
