(More customer reviews)The instructions don't mention Windows XP. The web site mentions it, barely, but wihhout instructions. I wasted an hour trying to do it myself, then an hour with tech support. Finally got it working, but only because I know about IP addresses, network configuration, etc. I imagine it would be easy to setup if they bothered to provide instructions for WIndows XP, and it may be easy with older versions of Windows. But XP users should stay away. And wonder why NetGear can't provide any attempt at instructions a year after XP's release.
Once I got it working, it works fine. The only hassle was setting it up.

Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable. The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.
HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!! Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager. Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted. Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations). It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.
An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

Hawking HWPS12UG Wireless G Print Server - 2 USB/1 Parallel Ports, 802.11g Review

(More customer reviews)The device supports a good range of network and printing protocols: TCP/IP, Appletalk, Netware, Unix LPR, Windows print client, Internet Printing Protocol (which means you can print to a URL from your network or even the Internet). I have XP and Win 98 clients on wireless-G network with Linksys transcievers on the PC's and a Linksys wireless gateway/router. So far, I can't complain about the device, but there are a few reasons I can only give it 3 stars.
The installation booklet omits some critical information most import of which is the fact that you *MUST* have a wired TCP/IP connection to the device to configure it. If you don't have wired TCP/IP, you cannot configure or use this device. The stupidity of requiring a wired network to configure a wireless network device should be apparent. Much better it would have been to run setup through a USB or serial port. I was able to configure the device with a TCP/IP crossover cable from the one PC I have with a TCP/IP interface.
The installation booklet is essentially trash. On the included CD is a fairly large pdf document which, if you care to read through it, gives a more complete (and correct) discription of the installation and requirements. However, it still ASSUMES you have a reasonable amount of familiarity with TCP/IP networking and routing requirements. It also assumes you know a few things about wireless networking AND your particular wireless network. Some things get some explanation; some things don't. If you don't have a pretty good working knowledge of these networking things, this might not be the device for you. I would say success at correctly setting things up will demand a fairly high computer geek factor.
One thing to remember: In order to reset the device back to factory defaults (so you can start over and try again), you must press and HOLD the reset button for about 5 seconds until the power light flashes rapidly. The docs don't tell you this.
The installation docs contain no help or trouble shooting info. None. Zip. Nada. Also note that the Hawking web site is completely barren of any of this info too. A morning email to the Hawking tech support received a very brief reply of limited usefulness that afternoon.
In summary: The device is certainly a capable printer server. The docs and technical support need to be much better. I am at a loss to explain why a wired network must be present to configure a device for a wireless network.

SILEX TECHNOLOGY SX-2000WG Hi-Speed USB 802.11g Wireless Device Server Review

(More customer reviews)INTENT: I bought the Silex SX-2000WG USB Device Server for one reason but with the hope of all the reasons that it describes in the product description. I have the Kodak EasyShare AIO 5500 printer, scanner, fax, copier. I wanted to make it wirelessly available to other computers in the house. The Kodak website listed this device as a recommended accessory with a link to the Silex website. They have since removed this device from their list of accessories for the 5500.
CAVEATES:
* Product Description says it can connect up to 15 devices but it doesn't tell you that there is only one USB plug on the back of it. You have to use a USB hub for more than one device.
* Virtual Link software (required) does NOT run on Mac Snow Leopard at this time. It does run for a time but tends to cause the OS to crash. See "MAC SNOW LEOPARD" for more.
* Only one computer can connect at a time. See "HOW IT WORKS" for more.
* Some devices will require a wired connection for initial setup.
* SX-2000WG firmware updates only via Windows.
* No firmware update of devices can be performed wirelessly.
HOW IT WORKS: In layman's terms, it creates a USB over IP tunnel between the computer and the SX-2000WG. Virtually, it is as if the USB device is directly connected to your computer. A round blue icon appears in the Dock (Mac) or Tray (Windows) that allows you to connect to devices. If another device in the network has the connection, you have to send a request for a connection and the user of the other computer has to agree before their connection is released and your computer is connected. Ergo, device sharing is not like file or print sharing in a corporate network environment, where any computer on the network can access the resources. It does what it says. It provides a wireless connection to USB devices. Think of the USB over IP tunnel as a virtual USB wire through your wireless network, one computer at a time. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your device software requires sensing the device during installation, you will have to direct wired connect to the device during installation. More in SETUP.
CONCLUSION: For my purposes, it doesn't work. As I said above, it does not offer One-To-Many server services. Because the user of one computer ties up the printer, other computer users are not able to print until they request a link and the currently linked user releases the link.
SETUP THE SX-2000WG: The setup is fairly simple although not intuitive. Printed instructions include directions for Windows and Mac platforms. There is a utility on the included CD that has two different programs. One for setting up the Silex in your network and the other to enable your computer to connect to the printer. I used the setup program on my MacMini running OS 10.6.1. It allowed me to connect to the device both wirelessly and by Cat5. The printed instructions are only for wired setup, which is the easiest to follow but requires a wire. If you select the wireless setup, the software does explain the following. The wireless setup process required that I change the IP address of my Mac to match the IP address they included in the SX-2000WG. After connecting to the SX-2000WG, it listed the available wireless networks. I selected my network, provided my networks password and it joined it receiving a DHCP provided IP address from my DSL router. At that point I lost a connection to the SX-2000WG and changed the IP of my Mac to DHCP and rejoined the network. NOTE: There was another wireless setup that allowed all manual settings but it required knowing if your AP was WAP, WEP, etc., and levels of encryption, etc. I was easier to choose the automatic route.
SETUP THE WINDOWS: The software included on the CD was (like the Mac) older software. I have a Vista Home computer and I chose to download current software from the Silex website. The installation is much more intuitive on a Windows computer and completely up to date. The SX-2000WG client software will find the device server on the wireless network and ask you to select it. When the installation is complete, you will have to start it from the Start Programs menu. You can choose options that cause the software to run upon startup, appear in the Tray, automatically connect to devices, etc. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you haven't installed your printer (or other device) software, you will have to wire connect for the first time. The Kodak software also will attempt to sense and update the firmware of the printer while installing. Again, VERY IMPORTANT, you must have a wired USB connection during a firmware update. Yes I had to lug my printer to the PC to install the printer software. Once the printer software was installed, I was able to return the printer to the device server. Like the Mac, I had to open printer properties and find the printer again and select the virtual USB port. Pretty easy.
SETUP THE MAC: Not nearly as intuitive. The software included on the CD is intended for OS up to 10.4. I did try to install it but it bombed. I had to download drivers (for OS 10.5) from the Silex website. The Virtual Link software does work (via Rosetta). When you run the installer, it first asks if you want to install Rosetta. Click yes and it downloads from the Mac website and installs itself. Then you need to restart the SX-2000WG client software installer again. At this point I have moved my printer to the device server. This was because the printer software was already installed. The SX-2000WG client software will find the device server on the wireless network and ask you to select it. When the installation is complete, you may have to run the software from the Applications folder (I don't remember). You can choose options that cause the software to run upon startup, appear in the Dock, automatically connect to devices, etc. You can install the software while being logged in as a basic user because the Mac will ask for an administrator's login during installation, BUT to configure the options after installation will require being logged in as the administrator. Otherwise the options you select will not be saved. Your printer software can no longer see the printer because it doesn't see it on the wired port. You will have to go into System Preferences, select Print & Fax, and click the + icon to add the printer. After that everything works as advertised. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you haven't installed your printer (or other device) software, you will have to wire connect for the first time. The Kodak software also will attempt to sense and update the firmware of the printer while installing. Again, VERY IMPORTANT, you must have a wired USB connection during a firmware update.
MAC SNOW LEOPARD: Although the Virtual Link software does work when the Mac first boots up, it stops working (print jobs fail) when:
1) the Mac has been on for about an hour,
2) switching the USB connection between the other computers in the house.
Sometimes quitting the Virtual Link software and restarting it helps but not always. Sometime rebooting the Mac is necessary to get the software to work again. WORSE THAN THESE, my Mac occasionally will freeze up, the screen will turn gray from the top of the screen to the bottom, and a message in several languages will tell me that I must reboot the Mac by pressing and holding the power button. This only happened since I started using the Virtual Link software. I sent this information to Silex Tech Support and received the following reply.
"There are several known issues with Snow Leopard and our Virtual Link software, several of which are what you've listed. Unfortunately at this time it is not a supported operating system and our engineers are working hard to come up with software fixes to alleviate the problems you're encountering however at this time I can offer no support for your particular setup."
FIRMWARE: Do not attempt to update the firmware of any device via the device server. Make a wired USB connection to update firmware. Either the firmware will sense the connection is not direct and fail, or it will update the firmware and following the reboot of the device, it will not find the computer and the firmware update will bomb and revert (or worse, completely fail). I have experienced both.

I bought the refurbished version of this router. As far as I can tell, it's exactly the same except that it has the most current firmware pre-installed.
I used the Linksys CD to install it, and following the Step 1 instructions I managed to configure the Print Server very easily.
However, when I then proceeded to the next stage (Configuring your computer to see the wireless router via your wireless home network), the CD just pooped out, saying it wouldn't work with my operating system. No 'sorry', no help, just a dead end.
Fortunately, I found a website where it gives you the instructions, and within five minutes it was working perfectly. I'm going to try to include a link, but in case it doesn't work, type into google ehow WPSM54G and hopefully the first link will be How to set up a Linksys WPSM54G or PSUS4 print server under Windows XP, Vista, Vista 64, Windows 7, or Linux. (More customer reviews)My network is two wireless XP laptops and a Linksys 802.11b router so I was a little worried about mixing networking brands - but it worked out fine. Virtually no slowdown compared to having the printer directly connected to the laptop and I print some pretty big files. Setup wasn't too bad (~15-20 min staring at the manual really confused, 5 min reading amazon.com reviews, ~20-30 min installation). Much like what Hafizullah said, it's better to config in steps: configure the printer in the wired configuration and then get it to work wirelessly. Since the manual is mostly useless, here's what I did:
1. Wire it up (connect the print server to the router with an ethernet cable and the printer to the print server by USB).
2. Turn on printer, power on the print server (after startup sequence of ~20 sec, ethernet light should be lit).
3. At this point open up a browser and go to "192.168.0.10" and the print server config utility should start.
4. Click on the "configuration" tab and set: password, connection mode (mine is infrastructure), ESS-ID (your network's name), wireless channel, WEP (# bits and password). It's important to type the WEP key in exactly with no spaces or dashes because the utility won't give any error message if the password is wrong. Click 'save'.
5. Click on the "Network" tab and change the IP address if you want. It has to be within the range of assignable IP addresses for your wireless network (e.g. my router assigns from 192.169.1.1 to 192.169.1.101, so I set the print server to 192.169.1.2). Make sure to set "manually assign" otherwise you won't know what address your printer is on! I think the workgroup has to be set, but I'm not sure (I set it to the name of the wireless network).. Click 'save'.
6. At this point you should be able to print a test page. Click on the "tools" tab and click to print a test page. If it prints, you're in business.
7. Now you can set up the printer drivers. The instructions are actually pretty good for this, so use them here. Once that's done, try printing something that isn't a test page to make sure the printer itself is set up OK.
8. Now to configure the wireless portion. Unplug the ethernet cable, and click the reset button (recessed in the back of the print server). Once it finishes booting, the "wireless" light should be on or blinking. If so then you should be done. Try printing something.. I didn't have everything correctly set up initially, so this step took a few minutes. I think everything necessary to set was covered in #4.

I originally bought the linksys print server with the parallel port. That product sucks big time. Never work and when you contact support, they just tell you your printer is not supported besides asking silly questions like did you chose the printer as your default printer.
The D-Link print server works well. Not sure about durability since I just got it today and spent less than 15 min to set it up. Should have ignored the negative reviews and bought this instead of the linksys one. Would have saved a lot of time.

Linksys WPS54G Wireless-g Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)When I upgraded my wireless security to WPA I needed to upgrade my old D-Link wireless printserver (802.11b) to something that had WPA compatibility. I shopped around a lot for this and ended up going with the refurbished model because of the large price difference.
Over all I am very happy with this unit however I ran into a few set up problems which may be a real pain for the average user.
Like all Linksys wireless products (or all that I have had experience with) the package came with a driver/set up CD that says "run me first". The CD guides you through the set up process - telling you which cables to plug in first. To configure the printserver it needs to be plugged into the printer as well as the wireless router. The problem? Well, if my printer was near the router I wouldn't need a wireless printserver. So if you don't have a long ethernet cable (luckily I did) then you might have to move your printer temporarily - not a big deal but annoying.
Once the printserver was plugged in correctly the setup program "searches" for the printserver. This is where I had my first big problem. Although it was plugged in correctly, the computer couldn't find the printserver. I verified all the cables were correct and tried about 100 more times. Nothing. Eventually enraged, I called linksys tech support. The woman I spoke with was pleasant, though she didn't speak the best English. As I was talking to her I unplugged the printserver's ethernet cable from the router (so I could read the serial number of the router) then plugged it back in (I don't know if it was the same port or not) and when I went back to my computer it had found the printserver. I really don't think I there was anything wrong with the plug the first time, and I probably should give linksys the benefit of the doubt, but according to my search on the internet this is not an uncommon problem.
With that problem resolved I got off the phone with linksys and continued with the set up. I set up a network name for the printserver, a password, etc. Then I got to a page for security settings. Here was the biggest problem - the only choices were WEP 64 and WEP 128 - there was no WPA option!!! I was incensed because this was the main reason I bought this. I did some googling and verified that it was WPA compatible and then found that a firmware upgrade was needed to enable it.
I went to the linksys website found the latest firmware and downloaded it to my computer, however I had no way to flash it to the printserver (the download doesn't unzip with an executable file, nor does the printserver set up program have an option). So now I had to search for that - after more googling, I found that I needed to do it through the web based interface on the printserver. So I needed to plug the printserver into the router again (or I probably could have turned off the wireless security on the router). I then needed to go into the router's web interface (the old 192.168.1.1 thing). I then eventually found the DHCP client list and found the IP address for the printserver. I typed that into my browser (remember the password you set up for the prinserver. I believe the default is "admin") and I was in. Once I was on the printserver's interface I looked for a way to update the firmware only to find that it already had the latest version (probably an advantage of buying the refurbished model). I was confused and pissed. I was just about to give up, but I decided to navigate to the "wireless" tab where I found a security setting that...wait on it: allowed me to choose WPA! The printserver allowed WPA but the setup program just didn't give the option! I quickly enabled it and logged out. I then ran the set up disk on all my computers and I was done (do yourself a favor and install the printer drivers on each computer before you set it up for wireless).
Now that its set up I'm pleased to report its working great. If you are looking for a 802.11g/WPA wireless printserver and have some time and a moderate threshold for frustration this really is a great buy.

(More customer reviews)The installation is a little challenging. However, after reading the "troubleshooting" section of the little instruction manual, it worked. Not sure about long-term reliability, as the unit seems to get very hot. Size-wise, perfect! No perceptible delay in spooling the printer. It does not make economic sense to buy a wireless print server, if the router and the printer remain stationary. This print server is great for my use, i.e. wireless Internet in one room, with remote printing in another. Will report back if any problems develop. Remember, be patient and keep trying all of the options during the installation. FOLLOW-UP: Worked fine for two months until my old Canon BJC-2100 printer died (of natural causes that I believe are unrelated to the print server). Upon trying to re-install the print server with a new Canon Pixma IP3000 printer, I once gain ran into installation challenges. This time the print server did not recognize the printer nor the network connection. The written instructions did nothing. However, after visiting Netgear's website, I followed the recommendation to disable my software firewall (PC Cillin 2005 in my case). Low and behold, everything is now working, and I am once again a satisfied Netgear user. Does exactly what it is supposed to do (allow remote prining or printer sharing), with minimal, if any delay in spooling. Bottom line: Good product, lousy instructions!
FURTHER UPDATE (September 15, 2007): Two years after purchase, the original PS121 (which I reviewed) started to act up, i.e. was periodically NOT recognizing my printer. After re-installing from the Netgear disc several times, I got tired and decided to "upgrade" to a PS121 with "version 2" software. Before doing this I had trouble finding another brand that would work. No go on D-Link (not compatible per website) and Air-Link (compatible but did not work for me!) Again, the Netgear install was a bit tricky, foiled initially by "Norton Antibot" program. Be sure to disable any and all antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs!!! The newer PS121 version runs a PS121v2 indicator in the system tray, which gives a "positive assurance" that the printer is recognized. The only time I get a red light (not connected) is when the printer is powered off. After two months, everything is working fine. I would still recommend this item, however, make sure you have the Version 2 (v2) model. CAUTION to all: Make sure you visit Netgear's website prior to purchase, to ensure compatibility with your operating system and specific printer. I can't understand why the printer manufacturers can't market their own print servers. This would certainly help with the "compatibility" issue. I don't think this works with VISTA OS. Another reviewer mentioned downloading drivers from Netgear's website. I have XP, so no issue here. If problems do develop, I will report back.

I have been using the HP Wireless G Print Server for a month now and it works faultlessly. I did have an issue with my HP D5460 printer sending back the ink levels. Here is the best way to install:
First install the printer on each computer.
Disconnect the printer from all computers.

(More customer reviews)Cisco may be engaging in unlawful and deceptive trade practices by stating that this print server will work with "most" type 1 & 2 USB printers. What does "most" mean?
I spent 6.5 hours on the phone with Linksys techs trying to get connected to my Canon i850s. Nothing on the web site, disc manual or box listing printers it would not work with--a clear failure to inform when they have to know it won't.
One of the questions the techs ask is whether you are running a multifunction printer. (I wasn't.)Apparently this print server does not work with many multifunction printers, but Linksys and Cisco do not state that anywhere that I could find. (After I buy the thing is not the time to find out I got the wrong product.)
Finally a senior tech came online and said the print server would not work with my printer. I asked him for a list of printers that it would work with and he listed a few, but he said they were not allowed to put the list up on the web site.
Whoah! So that's why I spend 6.5 hours to find out your product does not work. [...]
Others, save yourself the headache, buy someone else's product.

(More customer reviews)I converted my LaserJet 5MP (what a workhorse!) to wireless with this unit. It communicates well with the Ubuntu and Windows Vista laptops in the house. Wireless printing is much more convenient than print sharing since you don't have to turn on an extra machine to act as a server.
The documentation could be better and you need a Windows computer (or WINE) to get this running because the web interface doesn't work out of the box. But it's been running fine for weeks now that I've installed it.
I haven't had a problem with signal strength at all and my printer is upstairs while my computer is often downstairs.
I would recommend this adapter with the caveat that it's easy to set up if you know the basics of home networks. From the other reviews and comments, I'd say that if you don't know what an IP address is or how to install a networked printer on your OS, you might want to look elsewhere for something simpler to install.

(More customer reviews)I would like to share my experience with this print server - it took me only 15 minutes to get it setup and print the first page.
First unit I got is defective - it refused to talk to my router reliably. Exchanged for the second unit and this one works like a charm. I am able to print from my notebook and desktop to my Samsung Multifunction Laser printer - the print speed is FAST and feels similar to direct USB connection!
Here's my advice on setting this unit up under Windows XP
1) First connect the DP-G310 via regular ethernet cable (NOT cross-over cable) to your Router / Hub / Switch. From Internet Explorer (or Netscape) type http://192.168.0.10 to enter the DP-G310 setup. If it doesn't come up then you need to follow the instruction on setting your computer's IP address to within the range. Fortunately, I have a D-Link 802.11B router which automatically talk to the DP-G310 so I don't have to go through the trouble of manually set IP address on my computer.
(However, if you don't have a Router / Hub and you just want to connect the DP-G310 DIRECTLY to your computer's ethernet port then you will most likely need a cross-over cable and need to set IP address of your computer maunally as instructed in the manual.)
2) Once you enter the DP-G310 setup page you need to enter your router's name, any encryption (64 vs. 128 bit, etc). This part is explained in the installation instruction.
3) Carefully write down the name of the print port as directed in the instruction manual. You will need this name later.
4) Now, save the settings, and make sure your firmware is up to date (v. 1.10 as of 6/05/04). Unplug the power of the DP-G310. Disconnect the ethernet cable from the DP-G310 and the router. Now power up the DP-G310 again and look carefully at the WLAN light and MAKE SURE IT'S LIT!! It takes about 30 seconds to establish connection with your router. Once the WLAN lights up go back to your web browser again and trying to enter the DP-G310 setup again. IF YOU CAN'T BRING THE SETUP PAGE UP DO NOT PROCEED - your print server is NOT talking wirelessly to your router so you need to go back to hard-wire connection and make sure all your wireless settings are indeed correct.
5) If you can bring up the DP-G310 setup page "wirelessly" then you are ready to proceed to the next step - setup the printer. Now, this is where the instruction becomes a bit confusing. The installation instruction tells you to manually create a TCP/IP printer port first then select the printer driver; however, this assumes that the printer driver for your particular printer is ALREADY provided by Windows XP. In reality, this is not the case for majority of the newer printers out on the market. If Windows XP does not already have built-in driver for your printer I recommend you do the following first:
For example, if you want to print from your notebook wirelessly to a USB Laser printer, THE FIRST THING TO DO IS INSTALL THE USB DRIVER OF THAT LASER PRINTER ONTO YOUR NOTEBOOK using a regular USB cable and make sure your notebook can print through the USB cable first.
After the printer is setup to print through USB cable, disconnect the USB cable, open the "Printer Folder" window, right click your printer, and goto "properties". Now click the "port" tab. Click "add port", click "Standard TCP/IP Port", and click "create new port". Now just follow the direction in the instruction manual - it's straight forward from this point on.
Although it may seem complicated but for me it's a smooth process and only took me about 15 minutes - now my desktop and my notebook both print wireless to my Samsung Laser Multifunction which connect through USB cable to DP-G310.

I was skeptical that this would work.
I was impressed that this print server worked with an easy 5 minute guided setup on my Minolta 1250W GDI printer.
The range of the wireless (Im using B, not G) is fine (covers whole floor of large home).
