While looking for a modem as a backup option for getting online when my wireless ISP goes down (not too often, but it happens, then I have to bring out my long phone cord, plug it in, disable my wireless adapter and bring up my dial up connection, and...), while searching I came upon this Bluetooth Wireless Modem, I thought "What a great idea!" As I dug deeper for info via online searching I looked for like items from other makers, I looked for reviews, I spent a few days searching and reading. I got the feeling that this type of device is quickly becoming a rare find. I wondered why, I suspected poor performance/design/service.... I found no evidence of any of this, yet I was skeptical, and curious.
I thought I'd go ahead and buy this from Amazon knowing their rock solid return policy, besides it wasn't widely available on other sites. The day it arrived I set this little device up quickly, it was easy. I turned off my wireless ISP for my laptop and proceeded to dial up... WIRELESSLY... through this modem via Bluetooth... It connected quickly and I was able to log on with a 2nd computer as well, at the same time! Without a CAT cable! We were sharing a dial up connection... wirelessly! I'm sorry if I sound so surprised by this and maybe I shouldn't be, but what can I say, it's a great product. I had no idea that a wireless Bluetooth modem was available.
I am happy that I found this little modem and that it works so well. Only time will tell how long it will last, I don't need to use it much, so I won't know it's dependability long term. For now, I'm glad I took a chance on it.

Western Digital My Book World Edition 2 TB Network Attached Storage Review

Western Digital My Book World Edition 2 TB Network Attached Storage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 2TB version of this (but not the version that has two physical drives). I'm not really all that interested in having the redundancy of RAID, weird programs backing up my computer when I'm not around, or software that allows me to connect to it remotely. I just want to throw my data on there from any one of the computers on my network and be able to get it off reasonably quickly, and I want it to go to sleep when I'm not using it. This drive does those things well.
I was looking for a drive that:
1. allows me to ssh in and tweak things by hand if I want
2. goes to sleep when not in use and wakes up without a problem
3. is cheap, quiet, and looks good
4. is fast enough for my needs
5. doesn't have any gotchas that impair its use significantly
In these respects this drive performs well.
The first thing I did when I got it was enable ssh, which you can do through the web menu. Then I logged in and disabled the mionet script. Mionet is the software that allows you to log in remotely, but it's apparently the buggiest and most wasteful program ever. You can supposedly disable this through the menu but it comes back on when you are not looking, so you actually need to physically go in and disable the startup script. I'm a linux guy so this was no problem. There are some howto's on the web that will tell you how to do this.
I played around with twonky, which is the software for playing media through UPnP. I think it's a cool idea, but the truth is that I have no need for it. I don't need/want to stream to anything but computers, and in that case it's easier to just map this drive and play the movie or song from that computer using my normal software. So I disabled twonky as well. It seemed to have a bunch of spawned processes, so this was probably a good thing. This also needs to be done through ssh.
I didn't install any of the software that comes on the CD's or anything. Apparently that software is crap anyway. I'm not sure what I would want it for. This drive works once you stick it on the network...no configuration necessary. I can get to the drive either by referencing its IP address or the hostname I gave it through the web interface.
The drive is silent and unobtrusive. The led white bar on the front slowly flashes on and off if it's sleeping and moves up and down if it's not. You can disable these leds through the web interface so it's even less obtrusive. I was worried that the sleep feature wouldn't work correctly but it works perfectly, which is one big plus about this drive. You don't notice it go to sleep because it's so quiet anyway, but it does after 15 minutes or something of not being used. Then when you try and read from it again it starts up quickly and there's no fuss. No need to turn it off or mess with it in any way, ever. Nice.
Performance is...pretty ok considering the type of device it is. According to the reviews I read, this drive is fast compared with others in its class. If you want something real fast, you have to pay up. Anyway, I have a gigabit network and I do realize you can't ever actually get the theoretical optimal speed. For reference (indicator of how good my network is or isn't), when I copy from one computer to another (both pretty fast computers) using SMB I get about 19.5 MB per second. When I use SMB to copy something onto this NAS I get about 10.8 MB per second. It's not as fast as copying to a computer, but I knew that going in. This is a powersaving and inexpensive device and both of those say it won't match performance of a fast computer with a PCI express gigabit connection. Anyway, when I read from it I get more like 16 MB per second or a little more. That's nearly as fast as a computer-to-computer copy. So I'm satisfied. I can certainly watch movies off of this drive directly without any skipping or anything. If you want a dramatic speed improvement over those, you can use ftp instead of smb (the latter just means mapping the network drive and copying to it through windows for those of you who may not know). I don't need the extra speed, though, and it's more of a hassle to use ftp, so I disabled the ftp server. Some day I may actually upgrade the SMB server the drive comes with. Apparently you can get a significant performance boost doing that but it's much more of a hack than the things I mentioned above. I don't want to risk screwing anything up in this drive now that it's working so flawlessly.
You can still remotely use this drive if you configure your router to pass http requests or ssh requests to it. No need for mionet. That's true of any computer that runs ssh and an http server. I would be crazy to sign up for some service to provide this capability. I didn't look closely at the twonky server, but I got the feeling that it would eventually want you to sign up for something as well. I shouldn't comment too much because I just disabled that garbage.
Things I don't do that apparently this drive can do:
1. Stream movies, pictures, or music to UPnP devices or Ipods
2. ftp, apple protocols
3. remote use using mionet
4. automatic backups
5. utilize an external USB hard drive
6. anything else besides just hold
so you will have to read other reviews for info about these features.
So yeah, I'm more techy than probably the average user, but the few tweaks I used weren't that significant. Since this drive allows ssh access, runs linux, and is popular enough that lots of people have it and have figured out how to tweak it, it's pretty easy to get working perfectly and there are plenty of howtos on the web. I'm real happy with it.
================
Edit: Instructions on how to do the tweaks I did are not available in the instructions. There are a number of sites on the web that describe how and why to do them. Just make sure your tweaks apply to the new "white light" version, which is this one. Some tweaks refer to the old "blue circle" version. Anyway this is what I did: First enable ssh through the web menu and ssh in as root. Default password is welc0me. Use these tips at your own risk obviously.
1. To disable mionet: First disable it through the web menu. Unfortunately the wakeup script will start it up again in 20 minutes or so because of a bug, so we fix it by editing /usr/mionet/monitorCVM.sh using vi. At the top (after the comments) add the following:
# Start of hack to make Mionet obey startup flag
if [ ! -f "/etc/.mionet_on_startup" ]; then
exit 1
fi
# End of hack to make Mionet obey startup flag
2. To disable twonky by moving its startup script to the root home directory:
mv /etc/init.d/S97twonkyserver ~
3. To disable mDNS responder by moving its startup script to the root home directory:
mv /etc/init.d/S9mDNSResponder ~
I disabled ftp through the web menu. There are other things that can be disabled or even upgraded but these are what make the difference and it all works for me. Reboot the NAS after making these tweaks.
If you do a "top" command before these tweaks you will see a number of processes dealing with these three features. After you will see that much less is running and when you copy to and from the NAS you will notice a performance boost. For security you can then disable ssh through the web menu if you want.
=========================

Hawking HiGain Directional Antenna, mini indoor, 7dBi - HAI7MD Review

Hawking HiGain Directional Antenna, mini indoor, 7dBi - HAI7MD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This mini indoor antenna does provide a boost over the standard 2dbi antenna that you receive from any typical router however this device is smaller than I had expected (seems to be only about 5-6 inches high). Further, upon installing the antenna on the back of my D-Link router, the connector on this Hawking antenna snapped off apparently due to a poor soldering job by Hawking. Luckily, the damage doesn't seem to be permanent and the antenna seems to be working despite the poor soldering.
Signal-wise, I was able to obtain about a 10% signal increase with a router on the second floor and a computer on the first floor with numerous walls in between. Not too shabby but for my purposes, I had to utilize a Hawking signal booster Hawking HiGain Signal Booster version 2 - HSB2 and a carefully-placed Trendnet antenna TRENDnet 14 dBi Outdoor High Gain Directional Antenna to achieve 100% signal (for comparison: without any enhancements, my D-Link DIR655 N Router can typically provide about 60% signal).

7'' EPC Netbook wifi Black Review

I bought one of these, got it in the mail yesterday, and didn't expect much for the low price that I paid, but at least I had hoped it would power up and last longer than 3 hours. I got it turned on, got it to connect to my home network for about 20 minutes, got disconnect and could not get it to reconnect to my home networking system even after sitting right in front of the router. The touch pad caused the cursor to erratically jump all over the display so had to connect a mouse to one of the USB ports. About 3 hours into trying everything to connect to my network I heard a faint "pop", the display went blank, I could smell that electrical overheating odor, and the back of the display lid began to feel warm. I depowered it and emailed the seller. Even though I paid for an additional 1 year warranty I now find out that the warranty is with a 3rd party, not with the company that I purchased it from. If I return it for a refund (at this time I have not received a return authorization) I will be charged a 25% "restocking fee" plus pay the return postage. I'll just have to take my losses but at least have learned a lesson... buy a name brand from a reputable company. You get what you pay for.

Samsung BD-P2500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Samsung BD-P2500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very happy with this purchase! I'm glad to see Amazon has them back in stock. I have never had a problem with another seller - but I do prefer Amazon. I got my unit from a local retailer who I had a discount code for. With tax etc. I ended up paying what I would have paid on amazon. Unfortunately amazon now charges tax for us New York residents (not amazon's choice...)
I digress.
I was initially going to buy the BD-P1500 just for it's price point, but was drawn to this model when I found out about the Netflix feature.
The unit was well packed (nice to see manufacturers getting more conscious about being "green" with packing).
The unit is smaller than I expected and seems sturdy.
Box contained:
Player with permanently attached cord
Remote with batteries (aaa)
One AV cable (RCA red/yellow/white)
User guide
The anynet+ feature is nice if you have other Samsung components. I have a Samsung TV and because I used an HDMI cable to connect, the TV and Blu-ray player "talk" to each other. The player turns the TV on automatically and switches it to the correct input which is a nice convenience.
NETFLIX! This feature is so cool! The picture quality was amazing. I have the player connected to my linksys router with a cable using the net port on the back. I suppose you could do this wirelessly with some extra components. You have to log into netflix and cue movies on your PC, and then you can watch them on your TV through the player. It works really well. Note that this feature requires a firmware upgrade (see below for my complaint about this...)
Picture and sound quality seems wonderful!
Two small quirks/complaints:
1) Load time: It takes a good minute or so for a blu-ray disk to load initially. Once loaded response time is great, but that initial load time is long
2) Firmware upgrade: I connected the unit to my router and went to setup to have it check for an upgrade and was told that I already had the latest firmware, which I know I did not. If you turn the player on and don't see the Netflix logo on the home screen, you probably don't have the latest firmware. I went to the Samsung website, downloaded an update file which I then had to burn to a CD. Putting the CD in the player then sucessfully updated the firmware. I am not sure why the net upgrade option didn't work, but I have seen other users complain about this online. A mild annoyance. The CD upgrade took about 5 minutes. It is also upgradable by USB using a flash drive.
All in all, I am very happy with this!

HQV Video Processor
In a perfect world, every disc's image that passed through your Blu-ray disc player into your HDTV would offer immaculate 1080p video with flawless color, impeccable detail, and nary a bit of pesky video noise. In the real world, though, pristine source material isn't available for every Blu-ray disc—due to age or neglect of the original elements—and there are plenty of movies and TV shows on DVD that you'll still want to watch on your Blu-ray player. HQV video processing is a great way of elevating those less-than-perfect video sources to a new level, and ensuring that you're getting the most out of your beautiful high-definition video display.
To do this, the HQV video processors built into better Blu-ray players employ sophisticated algorithms to alleviate the problems that often plague less-than-perfect video sources. HQV processors analyze multiple video fields at once to determine where frames match up and where they don't, and even which objects are in motion within those frames. In analyzing the video signal over time, the processor also determines the proper frame rate or refresh rate of the original video signal—whether it's a 24 fps film source or a 30 fps video source, for example—and makes sure that it is dealt with properly. HQV video processors are also great at minimizing video noise without scrubbing the image of all its fine detail, as well as restoring some of the detail that's lost as a result of aggressive video filtering during the Blu-ray or DVD mastering process. And unlike some competing video processors, HQV processors boast enough processing power to keep up with the multiple video streams (picture-in-picture and split screen) found on many new Blu-ray discs.

On a stormy day last month, lightning struck a power line near my home and fried my gaming router. Not wanting to pay another expensive router, my husband got out his electrical meter and found that it was the router adapter that had been damaged. I searched on Amazon, and (of course) I found a replacement. We received it about a week and a half later, and when we plugged it in it worked perfectly. It works exactly as intended and our wireless internet is back up and running. I couldn't be happier!

This 3FT size is prefferable to the 10 FT size for transfering files. Less tangling and the price is MUCH cheaper.
The 10 FT model might be preferrable for gaming across the room, but gaming across the table with a 3FT cable is more fun.
You can also use a parallel port cable connection for gaming so this consideration shouldn't be given much emphasis if you already have a parallel cable.
If you do need to network over a longer distance in a working group, you likely will be using a hub so this is not the cable for that. Use a cat5 instead.

I bought this modem because it identical to the Comcast provided rental unit I have been using continuously for six years without a single problem or dropped connection. They have now raised the modem rental to $7.00 per month so buying my own modem is long overdue. I purchased this on Amazon Marketplace at a good price.
The problem I have encountered is that after connecting the new modem, I called Comcast to register the MAC address, I was told that it was "already in one of their systems but not in their inventory and the systems don't talk to each other so it can not be registered." I have written them asking for a better explanation or resolution and so far have only received a canned answer which does not address the problem. Great modem based on my past experience and I'm happy with Comcast's product but Comcast's support computing systems seem to be very poorly done.

Verizon DSL Gateway Review

Verizon DSL Gateway
Average Reviews:

Recently I bought this Verizon DSL Gateway, which is really an Actiontech GT704WG that's made specifically for Verizon DSL users. My service was working intermittantly with my six year old Westell so at first I bought a Netgear Wireless N router/modem, but neither I, nor Netgear, nor Verizon could get it to work. I returned the Netgear and bought this one, plugged it in, connected the cables, turned it on and in 30-45 seconds I was up and running. No calls to support, no fiddling around with it, it just worked. Also it stopped the intermittant disconnects that I was getting with the Westell. (I have some static in my phone line but this does not seem to affect this gateway as it did my Westell.)
I'm running two (wired) PCs and one (wireless) laptop on it. I did have to type in a new WEP address when I fired up my laptop, but the process was very easy. When the laptop booted up, it said that it found a new network and needs the WEP address, then it opened a window for me to type in the address. There was a card that came with the modem that said this would happen and told me the address was on the bottom of the modem. I typed in the numbers and was online with my laptop in seconds. This is useful cause no one can use your wireless service unless they know the WEP address, so it's a good thing.
It does look a little cheap and who knows how long it will last, but for three days now I've been enjoying fast - trouble free internet service. The box says it will ONLY work with Verizon DSL service though.

After 4 years of solid service, I replaced this particular RCA DOCSIS 2.0 modem with a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem (a motorola surfboard 6120).
The RCA provided almost 365/24/7 service during those 4 years.
I say "almost" 365/24/7, because I turned it off during extended periods of time away from home, like when I went on vacation and turned off all PC's and the modem.
It's still worked, when I donated it to a a local charity.
==================================================
Sidenote on the new surfboard 6120: The DOCSIS 3.0 motorola is unbelievable in data transfer rates/speed. I actually MUST turn it off occasionally, otherwise I would exceed the monthly data limit imposed by comcrap. I share several flavors of LINUX in ISO file format, plus some linux based security ISO's like
Backtrack 4 and such. The SB6120 will easily move 10-20 Gig of data every day.

--END of 10-23-2010 Update to original DCM315R review-------------------
Original review:
No more $3.00 a month rental fee for me.
After going through 4 "comcast rental" modems in less than a year
(3 motorola surfboards + a terayon) I have had it with
comcrap modems.
Sidenote: comcrap HSI cable modem:
It takes about 3-5 days on average to get back online after a modem dies.
[Comcrap wants to send a tech out to troubleshoot the line, but they want to do it from 1PM to 5PM, the same time that I am at work. It does not work out for me. I'm not taking time off work for someone to troubleshoot what I already KNOW is wrong; the modem.
In a best case scenario, I have to take off work early, to even get into town and just drop off the old modem and pickup a new one].
The RCA modem:
I contacted comcrap to give them my new MAC hardware adderss, for the RCA modem.
It took all of about 15 minutes; to have them enter my mac address into their system and to get me up and running.
I like the modem.
PROS:
1. The INTERNET ON/OFF button saves me from having to toggle my software firewall ON and OFF.
2. software setup is super simple. Device is seen by XP home edition and driver is installed without any problems.
3. The "DAN ELWELL Speed test" seems to be just as fast as my old motorola and/or terayon.
4. the PRICE was right. On 7-8-2006 Radioshack B&M had them for
$29 (regularly 79.99) but WAIT. The price rang up as only
$19.99, NOT the $29.99 on the stoer sign.
Totally Excellent deal.
I bought two. One to use and a spare.
5. Setup/install -one of the fastest and easiest devices to install.
CONS:
1. What happened to RCA's online registration and support?
Concerning these cable modems?
I had a hard time finding the online place to register.
2. Perhaps they (RCA) sold off their cable modem division; who knows. Conclusion:
I like the modem better than either the motorola surfboard or terayon.
I am NOT an online gamer, so I cannot address that issue.
Nor conclude whether the RCA is better or worse for online gaming.

Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch Review

Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Linksys SD205 switch rules. First, its mesmerizing because its the same size as the Ipod. Second, it does what its advertised such as connecting other computers together and most importantly, it regenerates signal. I was seriously considering buying a repeater, but they cost a couple hundred dollars. Technically, a hub is supposed to do the same thing but who wants that passive crap. The signal in my network started to attenuate and needed regeneration. This badboy fixed it and its back to full strength. I highly recommend this product if you are needing a component to branch out your network.

This newly-redesigned Linksys 5-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase your network traffics speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design -- tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub which divides the networks bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 5-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by five times. It is the perfect way of integrating 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. All five ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you dont have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates for best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port.

D-Link DHP-303 PowerLine HD Network Starter Kit Review

D-Link DHP-303 PowerLine HD Network Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
- Ease of Use.
I just had to plug the first one, plug the second, they recognized each other automatically... And that's it, off to the races
- Performance.
While the adapters does not reach the nominal throughput advertised on the box, no product ever comes close as mileage varies based on environment, I get 50MBps real throughput i.e. actual speed of my file transfer including network overhead which is 4 times better than by previous HomePlug 2.0 product.
Cons:
- None really.
I wish it had more than one ethernet port per adapter.
Overall, I am really glad I upgraded from my previous no brand HomePlug 2.0 product. I highly recommend the product.

Cisco-Linksys USB2HUB4 USB 4-Port Hub Review

Cisco-Linksys USB2HUB4 USB 4-Port Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's now more 18 months since this device was acquired and it has been there silently performing its job. Almost always all the bays have been occupied, infact I have to release devices in order to let more in. No complaints on performance or manufacturing. My only gripe (the reason for 4-stars) is that linksys should've provided more separation between the ports even though most USB connectors are a standard size. Try removing the connector from the center port when all ports are occupied and you'll know what I mean. It is funny that the ports are on the backside with the device facing you. The length of the cord provided with the device could've been longer. Last word, good solid buy.

NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card Review

NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To keep my small business network running, I've always tried to reduce costs where possible. Unfortunately, when it comes to network cards, using the lowest possible priced Ethernet card can be false economy.
The Netgear FA311 is one of the only cards I've come across where oddball compatibility issues don't arise. With others, there's always an issue or two, however minor they may be. A D-Link card that prevents a home automation package from working. A Linksys card that conflicts with an online streaming video technology. I could go on. The Netgear costs just a few dollars more than these others, but is still well under the price of brands such as 3Com in most cases.
For me, on all the machines I've tried, the FA311 installs quickly and easily, and works marvelously.
I have only one caution: Windows 2000 users should download and have ready the latest drivers from the Netgear web site. Across two FA311 purchases, the drivers delivered on the packaged floppy had various problems (e.g., major packet loss). I'm used to doing that as a matter of course for the majority of driver-dependent computer goodies, so I didn't find it to be a hassle in this case.

Corinex AV200 Powerline Ethernet Adapter - Desktop Review

Corinex AV200 Powerline Ethernet Adapter - Desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a pair of these Corinex AV200's. They are configured from a web browser, so don't require any software installation and are compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. Set up is relatively straightforward. There is a vast array of options - these are real, honest-to-goodness routers - for QoS and lots of other networking features and behaviors. However, there are sensible defaults throughout, so, after configuring them into your network and setting an encrypption key, they just work.
They worked great on the 20-year-old wiring in my apartment. 25Mb/sec was the minimum speed and up to 40Mb on good days.
Be sure you plug them *directly* into the wall outlet; if you use a surge-supressing powerstrip, it simply will not work. They run hot to the touch, always.
After 10 months, one of the pair died, and that was that.

Panasonic DMP-B500 WiFi Enabled 10.1-Inch Screen Portable Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Panasonic DMP-B500 WiFi Enabled 10.1-Inch Screen Portable Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are someone who needs a fifty inch screen to watch movies on, this machine is not for you. If you are someone with a Blu-Ray collection who travels and wants a way to watch them on the move, keep going. The DMP-B500 has a 10.1 inch screen that operates on a 1024x600 screen resolution. The DMP-B500 does NOT have a native 1080P screen. It is, however, an excellent screen for it's size. Colors are vivid and accurate, though if you're like me, you will have to turn down the color saturation. The default settings run a hair deeper to the red then they should, but it is easily fixed. There is no ghosting in the screen, nor are there artifacts or dark 'bricking'. While the screen is in operation there is no glare in a dark room, while still being easily visible in sunlight and room light.
The built in speakers won't drown out a room, but are easily heard with surprising depth and quality. You wont' be rewinding constantly to hear what someone said. The DMP-B500 only has one headphone jack, however, so if you have to share it in a car or on a plane you will have to buy a headphone splitter. The DMP-B500 will start a dvd instantly, though most Blu-Ray discs require five to fifteen seconds to go from main menu to movie. Native firmware will run every movie on the market at the moment, however there have been two firmware updates since I purchased my DMP-B500. Avatar and Alice in Wonderland both play flawlessly as does the rest of my collection. Of the fifty odd Blu-Ray I own, none have had any issues being played on the DMP-B500.
On a full battery charge you will get three hours from the DMP-B500, with headphones plugged in and the screen's brightness turned down, you can get four hours.
The DMP-B500 can connect to any HD television with an HDMI cable. While connected to the television, the DMP-B500 transmits at full 1080/24P with excellent video and sound quality.
The DMP-B500 can play Div-x .AVI files. However these files can NOT be placed on an SD card. Div-X files must be burned to disk or played off a standard usb thumb-drive. I have not yet convinced my DMP-B500 to read Div-x files from an external hard drive. The DMP-B500 can play MPeG2 files from the SD card. Fair warning, to activate the DMP-B500's Div-X capabilities you MUST burn the activation file to a cd or dvd. The activation file will not play via usb thumb drive, nor SD card.
.JPG files are supported, though the support if 'iffy'. Pictures taken from your camera in .JPG will show on your DMP-B500, but the machine 'sorts' the photos for you. A pictures of your nieces birthday party will find its way from the rest of the party photos and straight into those of your vacation. As of you, I don't know how the DMP-B500 sorts photos, as they aren't sorted alphabetically by name, nor by capture date.
MP3's play from burned disk, SD card, and USB drive. I have had no problems with any of my MP3's, those purchased from I-tunes and Amazon both worked fine.
Internet video is an interesting feature. You can watch Youtube, Amazon movies on demand, and Netflix via the built in Wifi adapter or the built in ethernet jack. So far all I have tried have played, but Youtube videos are not played in full screen. Instead they get roughly half the screen on the right side of the display. Picasso photo albums, Pandora internet radio, Fox Sports, and a weather network are additional internet features with more being added all the time. Firmware is updated either via cd or the built in ethernet connection. Updating the firmware takes around ten minutes.
The only true negatives about the DMP-B500 I can offer are the design and the price. The screen does not clam-shell, therefore it can't be tossed into a backpack as the screen is ALWAYS exposed. You need a dedicated carrying case to move the DMP-B500 around. Also, you must lift the screen to change discs. Neither are show stoppers, but both are annoyances. There is also the price to consider. The DMP-B500 is not a machine that's worth eight hundred dollars. Watch Amazon's daily price and wait for a good deal. Six hundred dollars for a machine of the DMP-B500's capabilities is a very good price, but not eight hundred.
Pro's: Display, sound, portability, multiple features, battery life, Disc read time.
Con's: SD Card not supporting DivX files, Screen always exposed, price, no included travel charger.
This machine is worth a purchase if you want to watch your Blu-ray's on the move. The DMP-B500 is vastly superior to the US release of the DMP-B100 in every way but price.
