(More customer reviews)I can't fathom why anybody would actually buy this product. Across the board, everything about it is just plain wrong.
Powerline networking is a relatively good idea, but it looks like the marketing department at D-Link got together one day to see what kind of products they could cram it in to. With this surveillance camera, the implementation is sloppy and unnecessary.
Keep in mind too, that Powerline networking isn't always as straightforward as plugging in a "wall wort" and connecting ethernet to it. If you're using any multi-outlet adapters, or if your home's wiring isn't nearly pristine, the experience can be almost as painful as just running CAT5 cable through your house.
The camera itself is massive compared to any web cam made in the past decade, and assembling it to the base is needlessly complicated for what it is. On the plus side, the base is quite heavy, so it isn't going to be knocked down easily. On the other hand, you absolutely must use wall anchors if you plan to mount the camera on a wall. And given the size of this camera, it's so large and obvious that your baby and pets are the only ones who aren't going to notice it.
Perhaps the most mind boggling issue I have with this kit, is that you can't host it yourself. To see what's on the camera, you have to go to D-Link's site (which is simply not possible if you aren't using Windows and Internet Explorer) and create an account. Once you've done that, you can only see the camera through D-Link's site.
I'm not typically a paranoid person, but that really raised an "Are you serious?" from me. Why the heck would you have a camera in your home broadcasting to D-Link's site? What stops D-Link from peeking in? And perhaps more importantly, what happens if D-Link goes under, or decides that they're just not interested in offering the service anymore? More likely than not, you'll be left with expensive, useless junk.
Don't get me wrong, I can see the value in offering a camera that "just works", but not having the option to host it yourself, and being locked in to Internet Explorer are ridiculous barriers.

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

(More customer reviews)The instructions don't mention Windows XP. The web site mentions it, barely, but wihhout instructions. I wasted an hour trying to do it myself, then an hour with tech support. Finally got it working, but only because I know about IP addresses, network configuration, etc. I imagine it would be easy to setup if they bothered to provide instructions for WIndows XP, and it may be easy with older versions of Windows. But XP users should stay away. And wonder why NetGear can't provide any attempt at instructions a year after XP's release.
Once I got it working, it works fine. The only hassle was setting it up.

(More customer reviews)Mine ver B1 fw 2.02 which d-link stopped making in 2007. This device works great on xp and has drivers online for vista but no drivers for win7 or linux unless you use are using version C or later. Spend money instead on wifi usb dongles that uses chipset drivers like Realtek RTL8187 instead of a major name brand which builds these things for planned obsolescence. I bought a generic usb dongle for far less that seems to be compatible with all operating systems and I have yet to encounter an environment it doesn't work on. I also don't like the fact that you have to install the driver as a program first to have the folder with the drivers, I have to copy this elsewhere so I can uninstall the d-link software since I use a third party software that will also delete the driver folder. They should give us the option to simply download the drivers separately so we can use windows for wireless management without the d-link's software.

I just had to plug the first one, plug the second, they recognized each other automatically... And that's it, off to the races
- Performance.
While the adapters does not reach the nominal throughput advertised on the box, no product ever comes close as mileage varies based on environment, I get 50MBps real throughput i.e. actual speed of my file transfer including network overhead which is 4 times better than by previous HomePlug 2.0 product.
Cons:
- None really.
I wish it had more than one ethernet port per adapter.
Overall, I am really glad I upgraded from my previous no brand HomePlug 2.0 product. I highly recommend the product.

Almost always all the bays have been occupied, infact I have to release devices in order to let more in. No complaints on performance or manufacturing. My only gripe (the reason for 4-stars) is that linksys should've provided more separation between the ports even though most USB connectors are a standard size. Try removing the connector from the center port when all ports are occupied and you'll know what I mean. It is funny that the ports are on the backside with the device facing you. The length of the cord provided with the device could've been longer. Last word, good solid buy.

D-Link DHP-301 Powerline HD Ethernet Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I was hoping to get at least 30 Mbps from my office to my living room (to stream HDTV, etc). I couldn't find any reviews for the D-Link version of Powerline HD but saw PC Mag and CNET reviews of the Netgear version. They were getting 45-53 Mbps in their test labs (theoretical max is 200Mbps). The D-Link kit was $60 cheaper so I decided to give it a try since I've had decent luck with other D-Link gear.
I have a 30 year old home so it's far from ideal test lab conditions. In my best case scenario where I plug the two adapters in consecutive outlets (8 feet apart), I get 48Mbps (avg). If I connect the adapters to the same circuit (i.e. outlets sharing the same circuit breaker), I get 20Mbps (avg). If I connect across two different circuits, I get 11Mbps (avg). Since HD streaming needs a solid 20Mbps, this won't meet my primary objective. However, it could extend my wireless broadband connection (5Mbps) if I choose to keep it. I may try out the Netgear version but I really doubt it would perform any better for me.
Pros:
-Very easy setup (adapters find each other in 15 sec)
-Kit comes with ethernet cables
Cons:
-Only 11-20Mbps (or 1.4-2.5 MB/s) in my home
-Adapters run pretty warm
Tips:
-Don't plug into any kind of surge protector or multi-outlet
-Connect the adapters on the same electrical circuit for max throughput

D-Link DNS-343 4-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure Review

(More customer reviews)This is my third D-Link NAS. I bought a DNS-323 one year ago and it has been on ever since, serving up files reliably to my PC/Mac home network, downloading torrents, and streaming videos to my PS3/XBOX 360 (after installing Twonky Media Server). Based on my mostly positive experience with D-link products and price-to-features ratio, I decided to stick with the brand. I had wasted money on a Galaxy Metal Gear NAS, and read mostly lukewarm reviews for Netgear, Iomega, Linksys, and other makers. Other NAS devices like the DLNA-enabled Buffalo Technology LinkStation Live were attractive, but their price point or storage capacity was not. I need a large number of bays to create a centralized media server.
When I outgrew the DNS-323, I bought a DNS321 2-bay when I really should have applied that $130 toward this 4-bay product instead. I wanted to consolidate the half dozen 1 TB external drives I had sitting around and network them so I didn't have to keep plugging and unplugging USB cables when I wanted to retrieve files. My home network is heterogeneous and I also needed the ability to write large files (4 GB+) to the drives. FAT32 is the only mutually writable format across XP and Mac, but it has a 4 GB filesize limit, making it impractical for my movie storage needs. The D-Link uses a Linux file system (ext2 or ext3, your choice), so filesize concerns are now gone.
I've had this product for a week, and so far so good. The device can be configured from any web browser, so you don't need the CD (which is a Windows-only configuration app). I have 1 TB Hitachi and WD drives inside. Build quality is solid (made of thick aluminum). It's a brick of a device and looks quite durable.
For the price, I am not expecting world class security and many bells and whistles. I just need it for storing my personal files and media on my home network, and stream them, and for that, it works to my satisfaction. The iTunes server works very nicely. For file transfers, I FTP to it and do all my copying that way. For some reason, the Mac is a lot faster (20MB/sec) than copying from XP (10MB/sec). Vista is the worse, and I usually get 5MB/sec.
It would've been really great for D-link to include BitTorrent support for this, like the DNS-323. Maybe in a future firmware update.
All in all, I'm quite happy with this product. I don't place heavy expectations on it and don't demand $1,500 server performance from a $370 device. It was the cheapest 4-bay NAS I could find for the features I wanted and gives great overall performance for the price. You can install telnet on it (look for Fonz's funplug) and open the device up to more hacking if you are so inclined.
Will update this review as I use the device more.

(More customer reviews)Look -- I don't need a great hub. Obviously, this is definitely NOT something you'd want to support a major corporate network. When it comes to inexpensive home networking, though, this product is everything you'd ever need. Our 3-computer home network has never been jammed, we have never experienced any difficulties with the hub, and setup was a complete breeze. Just make sure you buy the right cables for the job (there's yellow patch cables, and regular ethernet cables -- talk to your local computer store representative to sort out this issue.. they'll know). I personally knew nothing about home networks before I decided to set up my own, but all in all I'm definitely glad I decided to use this inexpensive option to set up our network. You'll definitely appreciate the nice light up LED's which tell you when and where data is being transferred. Did I mention we even use the hub to give cable modem access to all 3 of our computers, with only one actual cable modem? Isn't that great?

Netgear HE102 802.11a Wireless Access Point Review

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research before purchasing a solution for my home wireless network. I read a lot of horror stories about people having a hard time setting things up, connections dropping, etc., so I was a little spooked about spending a lot of money for something that might be a pain. Boy was I in for a surprise.
I picked this NetGear product because I have had good experiences with their products in the past, and hadn't really heard anything particularly bad about this product. When it arrived, I was VERY impressed. I simply plugged it in, connected it to my Ethernet hub, put my new network card into my laptop (I bought the NetGear HA501 at the same time), and viola! It just worked! No complicated setting to configure, nothing to change on my laptop, my network, nothing. And its range is outstanding.
Also, for those of you trying to decide between 802.11a and 802.11b, choose 802.11a. While you might see just a little perceived increase in speed, the reliability of your connection is so much better. With 802.11a you don't have to worry about microwaves, cell phones, cordless phones, and other devices interfering. With 802.11b there is so much interference that connections can (and do) drop or be very flaky.

Netgear DS106 6-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button Review

(More customer reviews)An earlier review stated "this hub only appears to provide half-duplex support".This is part of the definition of a hub vs a switch, thus the product is not flawed. A switch will provide full duplex and is more appropriate for multiple high bandwidth devices. If you're attempting to decide HUB vs SWITCH, do a google search before you buy.
I have been a fan of Netgear products since they were originally under BayNetworks. They make high quality devices, attractive design, and they normally offer long warranties. This product is no different. I've had it serving up a couple of machines now for over a year without incident. It's remained on 24 hours / 365 days and performs nicely.
The only downside I've seen with Netgear is their on going support (Firmware upgrades, etc.). Obvisouly that won't be an issue with this device, but something to consider if your also looking at them to provide a router solution. Also, the power adaptors seem to go a little too often.
All and all, this is a great hub and wonderful price. I can think of no reason for some who needs a hub to not pick this up.

D-Link DWL-G120 Wireless USB Adapter, 802.11g, 54Mbps Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased 2 D-Link DWL-G120 802.11g adapters from Amazon through Office Depot to use on two Tivo DVR's. I wanted the extra speed of these adapters, which were the only 802.11g adapters recommended by Tivo. I bought them specifically to make use of the Tivo To Go features that allows you to watch a show on one Tivo that was recorded on another one via the network and to transfer recordings from a Tivo to my PC. Neither feature worked with these adapters. If you read the Tivo website carefully, you will see they recommend D-Link DWL-G120 version B2. The Amazon website did not indicate what version was being sold. I was shipped the B1 version and they keep losing the connection whenever I try to transfer recordings from one Tivo to the other or to my PC. A Tivo person on their community forum verified that a different chipset is on the B2 and that the B1 causes hangups and freezes like what I experienced.
By the way, I don't think the 802.11g makes the transfers any faster than 802.11b. Even when the transfers were working before freezing, the speed was about the same or slower than real time. I've read technical reviews on other adapters and they all say the same thing. Of course, Tivo doesn't mention this in all their hype about Tivo to Go.
I emailed Office Depot to see if I could get a refund or exchange them for the proper version. So far, no reply from Office Depot. To be fair, the first adapter was defective, but Office Depot shipped me a replacement within 3 business days after I phoned them, not that it mattered as it turned out. I'll give them a great review as a merchant if they take back the two I still have.
My advice, pay the extra cost and buy adapters direct from Tivo. Then you only have one vendor to deal with if problems develop. If I ever get the B2 version and they work well, I'll post a new review, but for now I'm giving these adapters the lowest rating possible - 1 star.

(More customer reviews)The following answer on the D-Link tech support site says it all: "The DWL-520 requires a PCI 2.2 compliant motherboard (3.3v) in order to function. If your PCI slot is 2.1 compliant, or if the PCI slot is using 5v, then the card won't be detected by Windows and unfortunately will not work." And how will you know if you have a PCI 2.2 compliant board? Essentially, you won't, until you try the card or dig deep into the specs on your computer's motherboard. I have a very reputable ASUS Pentium III motherboard, that won't recognize this card. Very frustrating...

(More customer reviews)I'm having the same connectivity issues as the other two reviewers (Noah and Casey). We have two servers where I installed the cards, running Windows 2003 Standard Server with SP1 and all updates; the servers are connected to 3COM gigabit switch. The connection starts just fine, but it cuts off in about 2 to 4 min of medium file traffic, and the servers become inaccessible - not even responding to pings. The card needs to be reset to restore the connection - only to drop it again in the next 3 minutes. We tested the switch to ensure it's working, and we tested the cabling, as well, - everything seemed working fine. Finally, we gave up and installed more expensive Intel 82541PI Gigabit cards. No problems since then.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product from Amazon in February 2007, and have since regretted my purchase. To begin with, I could not get the product to work. I could see that packets were being sent and received but I could not get to the internet. Over a period of 3 days, I called up customer service around 12 times. Every time, I had to wait 10 minutes and then had to leave a message. However, I never got a call back. I finally called up AT&T and the technician there helped me navigate the product even though this is not one of the products they support.
I finally did get the modem working, but once every few days, it stopped working and I had to reboot the modem everytime. After 6 weeks of suffering through the product, I have decided to return the product for a refund. Based upon my experience, I would not advise anyone to buy this product.
