(More customer reviews)I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

(More customer reviews)An earlier review stated "this hub only appears to provide half-duplex support".This is part of the definition of a hub vs a switch, thus the product is not flawed. A switch will provide full duplex and is more appropriate for multiple high bandwidth devices. If you're attempting to decide HUB vs SWITCH, do a google search before you buy.
I have been a fan of Netgear products since they were originally under BayNetworks. They make high quality devices, attractive design, and they normally offer long warranties. This product is no different. I've had it serving up a couple of machines now for over a year without incident. It's remained on 24 hours / 365 days and performs nicely.
The only downside I've seen with Netgear is their on going support (Firmware upgrades, etc.). Obvisouly that won't be an issue with this device, but something to consider if your also looking at them to provide a router solution. Also, the power adaptors seem to go a little too often.
All and all, this is a great hub and wonderful price. I can think of no reason for some who needs a hub to not pick this up.

Bought this to replace a Belkin wireless router that didn't have enough Ethernet ports. Belkin: EASY to set up, NO PROBLEMS. D-Link DIR-825: a total mess.
Installing this unit requires that you BE a computer geek or you HIRE a computer geek. If you're a Macintosh user--although it theoretically will work with Macs--DO NOT BUY, or run back to the computer store to return it.
Although I would not describe myself as a fully knowledgeable computer installer, I'm a fairly sophisticated user and have been since 1980. Speaking of 1980, the "manual" that comes with this unit would have been considered poor even by 1980 standards.
I've spent nearly the entire day attempting to get this unit set up and it's still not working. The D-Link website is one of the clunkiest I've been on lately and is difficult to navigate and even when you "think" you've gotten to the correct place it's likely you're wrong and nothing there will help. Very frustrating.
If you can live with the slightly slower speed and fewer Ethernet ports, buy Belkin (I have no connection to the Belkin company). Belkin has done an outstanding job of making installation of their wireless routers quick and easy. D-Link is living in the distant past. Fools.

Wl-500Gp V2 11B/G 2.4 Ghz Media Storage With Afterburner Tech Review

(More customer reviews)Over my life time, I must have installed five or six different types of wireless routers to be hooked up with Comcast and other ISP's. I never had as much problems with this one with the others. The OEM firmware is very unstable. All these installations were based on dynamic IP or DCHP. So, I specified dynamic IP as this is what Comcast would require. I have to try and try cycling power on the cable modem before I finally get a connection. As soon as I modify any parameter including setting up the wireless parameters, bam, the connection is lost with error message like "you specified wrong dynamic IP or static IP address." After that, the only way to get back the connection with difficulty is to reset the router to default values and cycling the cable modem again. That means, it is of no use to me since I cannot specify any other parameter especially wireless for my use. I tried the two USB for both hd and printer when I have a connection following their exact instructions but found them not working. Not letting the harddisk to be NTFS formatted was a big disappointment. My setup is rather complicated. I have 3 bridge clints (one ASUS, one LINKSYS from T-mobile and one LINKSYS with small ram storage) all running with DD-WRT, and a WII connected wirelessly and directly. I have computers, blue ray players, game console, network printers connected to the network. I do not know if any or the whole configuration caused the problem, but as soon as I hook up a LINKSYS running on LINKSYS firmware (this one could not be upgraded to DD-WRT) to the cable modem, everything back to normal.
Anyway, last night I uploaded DD-WRT to the unit. That was another struggle. Some claimed they could use ASUS restore software to upload DD-WRT. I tried for an hour and a half but my laptop does not seem to be talking to the router, keeping a message "wait for getting an IP address." I know I was able to make the laptop talk to ASUS by an IP address 192.168.1.1, but this connection is lost when I ran RESTORE software. Finally, I use TFTP (Windows GUI version) with four steps to successfully upload the mega version of DD-WRT to the unit. Then, the unit seemed to work fine. I tested it as a bridge clint. Tonight when I returned home, I will try it as an AP.
I hope DD-WRT USB supports are better than ASUS OEM firmware because that was the reason I bought this one.
The moral of the story is if you are looking for easy setup and do not know basic knowledge of TCP/IP communication and how to load 3rd party firmware to this unit, I would suggest that you look elsewhere, or very likely you would have a unit without any use. If you are thinking to upload 3rd party firmware like TOMATO, OPENWRT or DD-WRT, I think this unit is worthwhile as ASUS routers are always on sale. I used a ASUS WL-520GU for a couple of years under DD-WRT with complete trouble-free operation. Hardware wise, they seem to be good. It is only the OEM firmware, which are user friendly in the interface but technically useless.
If you are thinking of using DD-WRT, I strongly suggest to look up this for installation instruction and not to use ASUS RESTORE utility.

If you use the windows GUI TFTP program, you can still follow the command line instruction but instead of using the command line, specify the appropriate .trx file in each step, leave the password blank, the server id should be 192.168.1.1. There is a working progress bar which makes you more confident about the process. However, I followed the instruction to wait 5 minutes when each step was finished. A couple of things you may want also to know:
(1) Whenever you want to pull up DD-WRT from the router, change the IP address of your network adapter to 192.168.1.1XX (I always use 100, but I do not think it matters much), and subnet mask to be 255.255.255.0. After you setup, you may want to change the network adapter setting back to DHCP. Of course, this is not necessary after the network is properly setup. This is only for initial setup.
(2) The first time when you pull up a new version of DD-WRT, they will ask you for a userid and password, just type your preferences and click the change button._______________________________
An update after one week ownership - Have used this unit with DD-WRT as an AP for several days now. I was able to hook up two different types of hard disks at different times to it. (I changed the hard disk when I decided to use the one with Freeagent 250G capacity instead of 75G capacity.) It has been great. The router now is running solid, supporting three bridge client routers, a WII, and two laptops while running the hard disk with no problem at all. The hard disk can be accessed by the whole network. That was my original intention of buying this. There is a wakeup problem from spin down with Seagate drive, but I think I found the fix in DD-WRT forum. That is not the router problem at all. I am now quite happy with it after going through substantial number of hours uploading DD-WRT to it.

(More customer reviews)I use this AP along with a NetGear dual band WNDR3700 Router, a Netgear GS116NA Giga Switch switch and a Netgear WNHDE111 5 GHz AP. I have ethernet cables from each AP back to the switch.
When you open the box you'll find the build quality of this AP to be very impressive. You'll get a CD that has an excellent manual which describes how to set up the unit. You can also go to the Netgear website and download the manual to see what you will be getting into. Not so bad but you should really have some idea of wireless settings since you will be able to select and adjust them with the WNDAP350. The manual is very helpful and if you just want to set up WPA2-PSK using a PassPhrase [network key] on both bands you'll have no problems as you will leave almost all settings on their default.
When the device arrives you don't immediately put in on your network. First you'll hook up the WNDAP350 to a laptop or desktop computer via an ethernet cable [provided in the box]. This removes the computer from the network and allows it to communicate with the WNDAP350. Why, well the WNDAP350 comes with a default IP of 192.168.0.237 so you set your adapter to have a static IP of 192.168.0.210. [subnet 255.255.255.0]. All of this is covered in the manual. You then go to your browser and type in [...] and this opens the excellent interface for the WNDAP350. Then you set the IP of the WNDAP350 to what you want for your network, say 196.168.1.10, and click apply. You can then set the computer adapter you were using back to "obtain an IP address automatically" and hook it back into your network. Now you are all set to put the WNDAP350 in your network and you can complete all settings from any network computer using the browser interface built into the WNDAP350. If you make a mistake in configuring the unit there is a reset button so you can start the process over.
If this made sense to you or you're willing to learn then you can't beat this AP as its one of the best around.

(More customer reviews)I have been running Netgear ProSafe networking equipment for many years for my small office at home. Due to its typically high reliability, performance and value I always stick with the prosafe line (geared toward business or enterprise use) over the consumer grade networking gear which is often unreliable. This is the first 802.11n unit that I found which was designed for the enterprise. So I broke down and picked it up for about $300 with shipping. The most important thing to know about this unit is that despite their advertising this unit as a dual band with both 802.11n and 802.11abg radios; the radios cannot both be used at the same time. You can only turn on one or the other. This is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. For those of us replacing old 802.11g equipment my preference would be for this unit to be able to support 802.11g legacy clients with one of the radios and also be able to support 802.11n 5ghz clients with the other 5ghz radio.
The range of the unit in 5ghz 40 mhz mode is quite short. Definately less than the WG102 802.11g unit that it was replacing. Since the range is so short I will have to get an additional unit and put it upstairs. Also, the firmware is a bit buggy and reliability doesn't seem as good as the mature wg102 unit. I'm certain that reliability will improve over time and perhaps speed too; but righ now I'd recommend sticking with 802.11g unless you absolutely have to upgrade to 802.11n.********************************

After countless hours of troubleshooting, I've finally narrowed down the problem. The unit is just not reliable with WMM turned on regardless of 20/40 mhz. With WMM turned off the unit is super reliable but only runs at 54mbps.
Stay away from this unit until more firmware updates are available resolving the WMM problem with Intel 5300 and Intel 4965 laptop nic cards. Don't know if this applies to other vendor nic cards.

I decided to give this NIC a try, since there several reviews indicating it works right out of the box on Windows 7. I received the package today and installed it in my computer. Sure enough, after my Windows 7 came up, it recognized the NIC (Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)). However, there's no connection because Windows 7 thinks the ethernet (media) cable is "unplugged". I made sure both ends of the cable are securely connected to the NIC and router port. On the NIC, I can see the LED is lit on the "DATA", but the 1000 LED is not lit. Ran the ipconfig /renew in an attempt to reconnect the NIC and even rebooted the computer again, but the same problem persisted. I googled for updated driver (even from Netgear.com) but none is available. I decided to run the driver setup from the accompanied resource CD. The driver installation complained that Windows 7 is not supported and terminates.
I've used many product from Netgear in the past and have very good experiences until this one. Windows 7 has been out for a while now, but netgear has yet to update this driver to work with Windows 7. I'm contacting J&R to returning this product.

This is an update of my review above (Feb 21, 2011).
I did contact J&R to return this product, which J&R authorized the return. However, I never got around to returning this item because I had to go on business trip and vacation one after the other. I forgot afterward until having to deal with VPN connection brought me back. I decided to give it second try. I plugged it back into the PCI slot 1 and powered up the computer. After the login to the Win 7 64-bit OS, Windows immediately detected new hardware and started to install the driver all on it's own. I remembered reading about Windows installing it's own driver for this and worked for someone, so I just let it finished. There was a small message indicating the install was complete and device ready for use. I immediately brought up a DOS box and typed in ipconfig /all and the devices was listed with IP address. I pinged www.yahoo.com and they were successful. I was blown away at what just happened. Now it's working great, and it is detected as being Gbit interface as well. I have VirtualBox with Ubuntu running on Windows 7, so I reconfigured the network to use this new nic as bridged network. Tried my VPN connections and that worked as well. So now I'm a happy camper. This is what should have happened the first time around. I would have given this product a 5 stars, but because of the original troublesome installation, I'm now giving it 4 stars.

(More customer reviews)Router works pretty well except for the fact that IT LOCKS UP AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. It'll drop all connections (wireless and wired) and refuse new ones until you reset it. Plus, mine refuses to upgrade the firmware and gives "not enough resources" errors. I have hardware v1.0 so MAYBE v3.0 is better, but why take the gamble?

I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

(More customer reviews)I needed a wireless bridge so that I could move my printer to a room with no jacks. The D-Link DAP-1522 had great reviews, and a bridge should work with any environment. Not this one.
* The router's wireless settings can not be configured without Internet Explorer (a Linux user like me has to fire up a VM).
* The bridge would not relay DHCP responses from the wireless network to the attached wired devices. D-Link support says that is because I am using a Linux router (though it shouldn't make a difference). If I configured static IP addresses on my wired devices, they worked great.
* D-Link has not released new firmware in over a year, so I doubt that these problems will get fixed.
* D-Link support was "lacking" (and don't get me started on Office Depot's awful return policy).
* Custom firmwares like dd-wrt or tomato won't work on this device, so there is no easy way to correct these problems.
In short, I can get it to do what I want, but it's a lot of hassle.

I started with the Microsoft solution of ICS (I specifically upgraded to Windows 98 SE to get that feature). I used thinnet on my home network and it worked ok but having to have the one PC on for the rest was awkard and it was slow for the kids multiplayer games. I then moved on to a SMC 7004BR router and it was bliss. Easy setup except the printer sharing. Even there I called their support and they walked me through it. I have since stepped up to the 7008BR for two locations I manage and these are better than the 7004BR (Faster too). I cannot recommend them enough.

Play N600 HD Dual Band N Route Review

(More customer reviews)I was also "iffy" with the purchase of this one. Actually I bought it first because it looked great for the price. But then I came home and started doing research on it. There is where I started to get scared and worried beacause of all the mixed reviews and especially because most of them were negative ones. It got to a point where I was doubting what I have done and I almost returned it a couple of times even before opening the box! (Side Note: I recently got Comcast High Speed Internet and I am using the Motorola SB5101U modem. I had purchased both my modem and my wireless router before I had my cable internet connected). But I decided to try it out first and in case it didn't work, then return it. Make a long story short, the router works awesome, the speed is great, the setup was so easy. Actually, I only plugged it to my router and turned it on. I didn't use the Setup CD or anything as it is already set up to just plug it and use it. You can use the CD to install the additional software (to use the USB ports for storage or using a printer, etc.) but it is not necessary. Last thing, the router had already the latest firmware (ver. 1.00.28) so I think it wasa one of the reasons it just worked and it is still working (I already had it for about a month). We don't have Cable TV or Satellite TV, so we use the router 90% to stream movies from Netflix ALL the time to the Wii and sometimes to the MacBookPro. Mostly the Wii so the kids can watch their cartoons and stuff on a bigger screen. Anyway, I have never had a problem with the router itself, only a couple of times I had to turn off the Wii to reconnect again, but I know it wasn't the router because the laptop was working fine at the time it happened. Another thing, everything in my house is wireless, my 2 laptops, my desktop and the Wii, oh yeah and sometimes I use my phone too. I just put the router in the middle of my house (my house is not big, but not small either, is a little over 1,500 sq. ft.) and I get really good reception everywhere in the house. Excellent repecetion all the time in the laptops.
I really recommend this, once again I was scared for all the reviews, but I guess they fixed all the issues with the new routers with the latest firmware.

(More customer reviews)This is not your office-store router nor is it from Ciscos "Linksys" line. This router runs full IOS and therefore is best configured with the CLI. I have never seen a gui or web interface for IOS routers that were worth mentioning. The wireless AP, while built into the router is treated as a separate unit. It runs its own IOS image and maintains a separate config. This adds to the complexity of configuring the box. You will want to have (or hire) someone with at least some experience with Cisco routers for this unit. On the other hand, this is a perfect practice router if you want to take a video or online Cisco Certification course. I used a non-wireless version of this unit for that very purpose years ago.
This router has every advanced routing feature you can think of available to it depending on the IOS image you install on it. If fact the one that came with it had them all as far as I can tell. I have been running it for weeks now with no hiccups and no rebooting needed. A great router well worth the price.

Unlike my previous Linksys BEFSR41 which needs to be reset every couple of weeks and drops game connections more often than I'd like. This one maintains game connection well. Router admin operations (most) does not drop any existing connections, unlike the Linksys which resets the router at the slightest configuration change. The SPI firewall works nicely and the latest firmware (beta as of this writing) supports UPNP (Windows Messenger Audio/Video). One nice feature is you can turn off the wireless to LAN bridge, so your roommates can surf the internet but can't physically access any machine wired directly to the router.
On the down side, the wireless signal strength (with a Netgear wireless card) is a little on the weak side. Hardly a surprise considering it's using the wireless card. You may re-consider if you need one that covers a lot of range. The telnet interface is also gone, but most people probably don't care. At one time, my router started to emit a high pitch hiss, caused by long usage of the wireless portion. I disconnected the power for a while and now it seems to be ok. Maybe they used a cheap component somewhere.
There's a different model called FR114P, essentially the same, except it lacks the wireless slot but adds a print server port. You may look into it if you don't need wireless capabilities.

(More customer reviews)I've given up on this product. The installation CD's first window was a mystery on what process to select since none showed as "installation". Called toll free number. Answered eventually (after enduring endless menu) by person who clearly spoke English as a second language. 30 min. on the phone later, I just gave up,thanked the guy for his time and ended the call. At one point I wondered if my call had prompted a hidden camera joke where eventually someone would tell me a joke had been played on me and the person I was speaking with really was Not a tech support rep etc.etc. I was absolutely worn out after dealing with Linksys's customer support for new installations. I had to repeat every sentence the guy said in an effort to confirm his instructions and then steps later, he would change his mind and have me un do something he had instructed me to do previously. After 30 min. on phone I questioned what to do with an included cable that he had not mentioned.When he told me it should have been installed many steps prior, I knew it was time to stop this torture. It was truly unbelievable ! End result: I am donating this unit to a local youth home,and buying another brand highly recommended to me by my neighbor who installed a wireless network in his home without any calls to tech support or any problems.I read scathing reports about the poor installation software on various Linksys products and now I am a believer. However poor the installation CD is, live tech support is worse....worthless, in fact.If you are not tech savy, I can't recommend using this product based on my installation misadventure.
