D-Link DCM-201 USB/Ethernet Cable Modem, DOCSIS 1.1 Certification Review

D-Link DCM-201 USB/Ethernet Cable Modem, DOCSIS 1.1 Certification
Average Reviews:

I used to have a cable modem that was provided by my cable company but I didn't want to pay the monthly lease fee anymore so I went out and bought this D-Link Cable Modem. I wasn't sure what all I had to do to get it to work, but when I asked a more computer knowledgable friend he said I just needed to plug it in and it will automatically configure itself.
So that's all I did. I called my cable company and told them I'd be switching modems, they wanted some long number off the back of the modem and said I was all set to go. So I plugged in the coax cable on the modem and plugged in the power. Within the next 10 seconds I was connected tot he Internet again.
Very easy.

Sharp AQUOS BDHP24 Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

Sharp AQUOS BDHP24 Blu-Ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I haven't written a review for a while but I felt it my duty to let people know how useless the player was. Very unexpected from Sharp. I got mine on a sale new for less than seventy bucks but its STILL not worth the aggravation and I took it back, I was happy even to pay the restocking fee.
There is no comparison to my PS3 or the Sony DBP-S370 which I would totally recommend over this by a long way - please see my review on that item.
Good points, the box it came in was the high point (!), looks nice under my TV, smallish device, streams Netflix 'ok' (although on the current firmware unable to search).
Bad points, cheap construction over all once you hold it, a LCD display that so 1980's, a stupid flashing blue circle on the front (again very 1980's), takes many minutes (1-2 min) to load a bluray disc, I couldn't get Harry Potter and the Half Blood price to even load (even with recommended 2gb pendrive plugged in the back).
Menus are awful. Really feels like a third rate device.
I would have expected better from Sharp, their LCD TVs that carry the same Aquos name are in a different league.
I personally would stay away from this particular item. It won't make a good gift (unless you don't like the person, then it will give many hours of frustration).

Cisco Syst. 1230 Aironet WLAN AP ( AIR-AP1230B-A-K9 ) Review

Cisco Syst. 1230 Aironet WLAN AP ( AIR-AP1230B-A-K9 )
Average Reviews:

I ordered the Cisco Aironet 1231 the other day, and after it arrived, set it up, and...couldn't get a wireless signal. I called customer support and was told I would be called back by a technician (which obviously the first person was not) within an hour. We waited...and got online to try to figure things out. Turns out that in VERY small print on an obscure documentation page of the 1231 it says at the very bottom that two external antennae are needed for the 2.4 GH wireless (802.11b/g) to work. I was even more disappointed to find out that the required antennae were available online for only $16 a piece, which makes Cisco look really cheap for not including such a small but vital item with a $500 router.
Although it took an astonishing twelve hours for customer support to get back to me, since I registered my complaint with them they have been very helpful. I really hope that they improve their web site-it really is not that helpful since you have to weed through pages of documentation before you can even begin to find information you need. I still haven't used this router since I'm waiting for the required antennae I had to order somewhere else. Cisco routers are supposed to be good, but as a warning to you, the potential customer, be aware that 1) you need to purchase external antennae with this product; 2) my initial experience with customer service was pretty disappointing.

The product works as described and had a visible increase in performance both in open areas where I already had "good" reception (went to excellent) and in a poor reception situation where my signal strength was boosted from basically none to 10-20%. The plug for it seems to be a bit loose, but that might just be my wireless device. The Velcro attachment for the antenna works well and is pretty convenient too. Decent cable length for getting this up into the air when necessary as well.

Netgear EN104TP 4-Port 10 Mbps Ethernet Hub RJ-45 with Uplink Button Review

Netgear EN104TP 4-Port 10 Mbps Ethernet Hub RJ-45 with Uplink Button
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our office used to use a handful of the EN-104 4-port hubs and some of the EN-108 (the 8-port version of the same product).
As 10 Mbps hubs go, the EN-104's are really nice.
The quality of NetGear equipment has always impressed me:
- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic.
- Status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active.
- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.
- With an easy-to-access switch, Port 1 toggles between station mode and uplink mode. Unlike some hubs where two jacks are wired together, this design prevents accidentally shorting a station to an uplink.
- Screw-mount notches on the underside allows for easy attachment to the wall, underside of a counter, etc.
If you want to set up a network without spending much, these hubs work well. However, I suggest you buy a 10/100 Mbps hub instead.
Here's why:
Practically all new networkable devices today support 100 Mbps (FastEthernet) as well as 10 Mbps (Ethernet). The EN-104 hub (and other 10 Mbps hubs) will limit you to the slower speed.
As 10/100 Mbps hubs are readily available today, and are quite affordable, I think your money is better spent on the faster hub.
Is there a noticeable difference between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps? It depends on your usage, but if you regularly work with files larger than about 300 KBytes or larger, you'll notice a tangible difference. For truly large files (like graphics/movies, or when installing an application via a network drive), a 10 second transfer at 100 Mbps will take well over a minute at 10 Mbps.
If the NetGear 10/100 hub (DS-104) is a bit too pricey for you, you might consider the Linksys EFAH05W 10/100 hub. Though not as "nice" as NetGear equipment, the Linksys 10/100 hub is only a few dollars more than this NetGear 10 Mbps hub.

This USB adapter will cause your sound card to stutter in a horrible manner. Many users on the netgear forum are reporting this issue and NETGEAR is not fixing this problem.
This is not a problem with XP/Vista IRQ conflicts (I went through the process of verifying this myself, which requires me to re-install XP to get my hyper threading support back). This is 100% a NETGEAR issue.

The NETGEAR WN121T RangeMax Next Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter makes it simple for you to provide the highest speed wireless internet access to your computer, whether it is a desktop or notebook, letting you surf the web, check email, stream music, make internet phone calls, and get a leg up on opponents when playing online games.

The adapter supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP and 2000 SP4. The WN111 features a USB 2.0 connection for wide compatibility and high speeds, and setup is as simple as installing the included software and plugging the USB connector into an available port.
Fast, Backwards Compatible, and Secure The NETGEAR WN121T uses the Wireless-N protocol (based on 802.11n draft) for speeds up to 300 Mbps and a range ten times that of 802.11g adapters when paired with a NETGEAR Wireless-N Router. With this much speed and bandwidth, you can easily download large files, place Internet phone calls, download MP3s, stream video, and play online games -- all at the same time, without hiccups, and from farther away. You'll notice the difference immediately.
The WN121T is backwards compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b wireless networks so you'll be able to connect to any hotspot, and it improves network performance up to 50 percent when used with the older 802.11b/g networks.
You can feel secure about your information as the adapter supports Wi-Fi protected access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK) and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for IEEE 082.11b and IEEE 802.11g. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.

Sony BRAVIA KDL55EX720 55-Inch 1080p 3D LED HDTV, Black Review

Sony BRAVIA KDL55EX720 55-Inch 1080p 3D LED HDTV, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this TV in a bundle with a 3D starter kit that included two pairs of 3D glasses. After weeks of waiting and bragging about my purchase to my friends, I finally got it yesterday. And it's pretty freaking awesome.
As I've said, I'm not really a super tech-y guy, so bear with me:
Picture: Very good. Granted I was watching a 37-inch LCD that was almost six years old, so even watching a crayon drawing on wax paper would be an upgrade. But I watched ESPN HD, Avatar HD in HBO and a bunch of other random things. There was no noticeable clouding (blobs of light on the screen) at all. I was pleasantly surprised that there really wasn't a soap opera effect on the movies and shows I watched.
More Picture: It's true that this isn't a "true" 240hz TV. It's marketed as a MotionFlow 240hz, which basically means that it's 120hz but has some sort of technology that Sony made up to "bring the frame rate up to 240hz." That being said, I probably wouldn't be able to notice the difference between 120 and 240hz anyway. I do wish the picture was a little bit brighter, but it's super easy to adjust the settings. Also, the black levels weren't as black as I'd like. When watching a show with a lot of black screen, it still looks a little gray compared to the black frame lining the TV.
Sound: GREAT. You know how sometimes you're watching a DVD or a TV show and the music and background noises are super loud and the voices and dialogue are super quiet, and then you have to turn up the volume to hear the dialogue, but then quickly turn it back down because some booming music scares the crap out of you? Not so with this TV. Apparently it's got some technology that detects dialog and will automatically soften the background sound and amplify the voices. Plus, when you change the sound setting to "S-Force Front Surround," there really is a noticeable difference in the quality, the sound does seem to echo more under this setting.
3D: Suh-weeeeet! Ok, there are definite cross-talk issues -- which is a term I learned by reading a bunch of reviews. You will see double images at certain points, but EVERY TV review I read suffers from this issue because it's a new technology. My DirecTV offered four 3D channels, one was a nature show channel that rotates shows about dinosaurs, ocean life, and space stuff. I spent four hours straight watching this channel and now know a bunch of random facts about dinosaurs, ocean life and space stuff. I invited three people over and the four of us watched this channel for hours. Yes I only had two glasses, but two of us would watch for a few minutes, and then politely share with the other people -- it sounds pathetic but they were amazed at the 3D. There were parts of the ocean documentary where schools of fish looked like they were a few feet out of the screen. And a freaking Brontosaurus totally peered into my living room -- I wanted to pet him. Even on large landscape pans, the depth perception was amazing.
Remote: Effin' BRILLIANT. I don't know why, but instantaneous response from the remote made me pretty damn happy. I had Time Warner Cable TV before, and it would do some crap where you'd be pressing the remote buttons and nothing would happen, and then like 15 seconds later everything you pushed would happen at once. DirecTV is better but would still lag sometimes. But this TV and it's default remote are like sweet lovers that orgasm at the same time. There is no lag time and the interface screen is ridiculously simple to use and navigate -- even for not-really-super-techy-guys.
Interface and Settings: Awesome. Navigating the settings is intuitive and simple -- it looks a lot like the PS3 interface. Everything's is laid out in Layman's terms and spelled out so clearly that even A GIRL would have no problems using it. There's even little features like naming the different display inputs AND ADDING AN ICON TO THEM?? So now when I change Display modes between DVD, DirecTV and Xbox, it very coolly displays those titles on the screen, AND HAS THE ICON I PICKED NEXT TO THEM! W00T! And changing the settings is cake. You can go directly into many of the main settings (like display, sound, etc) directly from the show you're watching instead of going into the menu.
Wireless and Internet Apps: This does NOT come in with built-in WiFi, but I plugged it directly into my router with a network cable. Done dada. I was getting good connection speeds with Youtube, Qriocity and Hulu. My only complaint is that it probably takes a little getting used to spell anything out -- kind of a weird alphanumeric style that you'd get when you spell something out using a numeric phone keypad.
So far, so awesome. If any issues arise, I'll update this review. But as of now, I'm loving the crap out of my new TV.

This card has been flawlessley for four months now. Preformance is very pleasing. A little stronger signal strength than most usb dongles that I've used. Plugged in the card, ran the installation software, and was up and running in about five minutes on my XP laptop. Around the house, I am able to get good signal strength
a few rooms away from the router. While out and about, I am able to achieve good connections from some distance. Haven't had any problems connecting to open networks, or on a secure network when using a password. This was not my experience with other devices.

Cisco-Linksys Network Storage System with 2 Bays (NAS200) Review

Cisco-Linksys Network Storage System with 2 Bays (NAS200)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The others have said it as well as I can. I agree with almost everything written (except the brief 2 line review that says it stinks). But here is my pro/con/comment report:
Pros: Very easy to setup. Very easy to install SATA drives (no cables, just slide in like a hot-swappable scsi drive). NO CLIENT SOFTWARE needed to map drives (just connect to \\nas200\sharename). Web based configuration so no software needed to manage. Option to power down hard drives after 10/20 minutes of inactivity, then another option to power down internal fan 10/20 minutes AFTER hard drives power down (to allow case to cool, I guess. This option makes the unit completely silent when not in use (this wasn't mentioned in other reviews). Inserting a USB hard drive (even one previously formatted as NTFS) results in instant detection, AND instant default share created (\\nas200\disk_1_1 for USB1). (to remove the usb external drive while the NAS is running press the small eject button next to the appropriate USB port. If you pull the cable or shut down the external drive, the NAS needs to be reset to see ALL shares). RAID1 option for protecting that precious data (it recommends configuring as individual drives, but no way would I do that. Why wouldn't you select RAID1 if available? Protect those precious family pictures, guys!). Small footprint, stacks with other linksys gear (routers, switches, APs, etc). Option to automatically shutdown every day or a given day of week at a set time. As nice as that is, the fact that the drives and then fan shutdown after inactivity makes it quiet and power saving anyway. Smaller and quieter and easier than using a separate computer (if you were considering making a Linux file "server" out of that spare tower case you had lying around). You don't need client software to map drives, however, the included client software, if you choose to install it, is very helpful and makes mapping drives very easy (adds a system tray icon to quickly map/unmap drives). Also, the software lets you attach the external USB drives from the NAS as if they were local USB drives (which I thought was very cool).
Cons: somewhat slow. I did 6GB in 30 minutes, so figure over an hour for 10-12GB of data over the 100Mb network. I think people are expecting too much from FastEthernet. Especially if you are using wireless! Here are the numbers: 100Megabits per second = 12.5megabytes per second = 750megabytes/minute = 45,000megabytes/minute = 44(real)Gigabytes/minute (assume 40 because FastEthernet really only gets around 90Mb/s in real world). So this unit is running around 25Mb instead of 100. But I wouldn't throw it out because of that. Also, if you are on wireless, well then your network is only really going around 12Mb/s at its best (over 802.11g) real world numbers. To display the list of files in an explorer window sometimes takes 10-20 seconds (but sometimes the files pop right up in a few seconds). When you have gigabit file sharing at work, the NAS is excruciatingly slow. No support for usb printer (the SLUG unit that linksys sells, basically this device with only 2 external USB drive support, has an active community writing Linux firmware that adds all kinds of features, including print server and firewall. I wonder if anyone is working on open source firmware for the nas200?). I digress. More cons: no provision to backup internal drives to external drives (another item on my Linux wishlist). For some reason, I thought that was mentioned on the spec sheet. If you pull an external drive, all shares disappear and you have to power cycle the unit. Takes almost 2 minutes to boot up. No option to power down external USB drives after inactivity, so even when the nas200 fan and internal drives shutdown, the external drives are still humming along. Not as feature rich as making a Linux file server out of that spare computer case you have lying around ;-).
Conclusion: I like the unit. I think it's really 3.5 stars. Its a little slow, but quiet and small, and it holds as much as you put in (I got two 320GB SATA drives, $80 each). If the USB ports could be print servers, that would be one less device in my linksys "stack". If the box could automatically backup internal drives to the external USB, that would be a little more peace of mind. I use it as my picture, document, and MP3 primary storage. The raid1 protects my data, and I use external USB drives to backup (but it's combersome because I simply map drive letters to both the internal drives and the external drives, then copy from one to the other. It would be nice if that feature was built-in). Its nice to have a unified file storage system at home, where I have 4 laptops and a desktop (for gaming :-), and to do it for about $300. Considering the small outlay, its worth getting to fool around with. If in the end, the speed is too slow for your home/SOHO network...you are only out $140 (and you can put the SATA drives in your beefy gaming rig).

Good antenna, really increased my signal! The software that came with it is good, but not great. Works well with Linux! I'd give it 5 stars if the cord from antenna base to wireless unit was longer.

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14 Review

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your wireless doesn't reach the rest of your house (like mine...) powerline is a great solution and these PhonEx units really are pretty much instant plug and play. I was amazed and relieved it was as simple to use as the ads on their site touted and you really can be up and running in less than 2 minutes like they say. (Unless your house is really large and it takes you longer than that to get to the room where you're putting the other extension...) In over 7 months use I have never had a failure with the boxes, speed has been pretty good with a DSL connection, and the best thing is it absolutely completely PC and Mac compatible. I use it in a home office situation where I have PC's, half the people I work with have Macs. You don't need to load anything -- you just plug in, boot up, and you're on. Which is great becuase most of the people I work with just want to turn it on and have it work. They don't wanna load a CD, configure their system, etc etc. My only complaint about the units are they're ugly. Maybe it doesn't matter because they just sit on the floor but still, in this day and age of tech design, they could at least make 'em look a little nice! But kudos to them for making it work so well at least. These are a great, simple, reliable solution to extending your network range. Plug it in (note that you need a minimum of TWO units; one on your router, and one on the other end where ever you are plugging in.) Turn on your computer. Everything works. It's that simple.

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg USB Adapter (USR5421) Review

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg USB Adapter (USR5421)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Installing the software for this USB adapter causes Windows XP home to lock-up continuously (to the point where you have to use the power button to shut the computer down). Multiple attempts to uninstall and reinstall yielded the same resutls. Also, the included software (which you must utilize), is slow and cumbersome. The US Robotics MaxG router is great, but buy a Netgear or Linksys USB adapter instead of this one and save yourself a lot of frustraton.
