Not totally awesome. But a little better than the smaller one I was using. In no way a miracle at all though. I use an alfa 1w and the stock small one is just about as good.

Power Supply AC ADAPTER 5V 2.5A for D-Link

A week ago, my D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router just died out of nowhere. Was working fine one moment, dead the next. Wouldn't power up, wouldn't do anything. I was about to throw it away and buy a new router when I decided to do some research and see if this was a common problem. Turns out it was. The power supply (adapter) is prone to going bad. I ordered this one as a replacement, and as soon as I got it, found out that my router wasn't dead at all. Just the power supply. This thing works just fine and saved me quite a bit of money on buying a new router. Also, ordered on a Saturday, received Monday via free Prime shipping. Couldn't be happier with such a cheap replacement.

TRENDnet 14dBi Outdoor High Gain Directional Antenna TEW-AO14D Review

TRENDnet 14dBi Outdoor High Gain Directional Antenna TEW-AO14D
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased this to increase the wireless signal within a 2-story building that has numerous walls in between the modem on the second floor and the computers on the first floor. With this antenna, I'm able to boost the wireless signal from about 50% to about 65% as long as the antenna is pointed at exactly the right location. A few degrees up/down/left/right will tend to decrease the amount of signal by a few percent.
When I further compared this device to the Super Cantenna (rated at 12dbi) WIRELESS GARDEN SCB03 Cantenna Wireless Network Booster, this antenna clearly performs better. However, when this antenna is compared to the Hawking HAI17MD Hawking HiGain Directional Antenna, mini indoor, 7dBi - HAI7MD, the difference is minimal. Pairing this antenna with a Hawking HSB2 Hawking HiGain Signal Booster version 2 - HSB2, I was able to receive 100% signal which surprisingly even outperformed our commercial grade D-Link 7700AP access point (the D-Link typically provided about 70-75% signal without any enhancements or boosters).
All in all, a cheap antenna that does work (although perhaps not as well as one would expect from something with 14db gain) but requires exact placement and a booster to really make it shine.
Note: You may need additional cables/connectors to hook this antenna up to your network. You will probably need at least an N-Type male to Reverse SMA Female connector (which you can get from the Trendnet Outdoor Arrestor Kit) TRENDnet Outdoor Arrestor Kit (Includes Reverse SMA to N-Type Converter) and if necessary, an antenna extension cable TRENDnet N-Type to N-Type Cable / 6M (19.7t.) or LMR400 N-type cable equivalent (try eBay).

Sonos S5 Wireless Internet Music Player (Black) Review

Sonos S5 Wireless Internet Music Player (Black)

Just got the S5 about an hour ago. Setup couldn't be easier. Step 1 - connect the power cord to an power outlet. Step 2 - hit the Mute and + button to get the S5 added as a new zone, Step 3 - hmmm....I don't think there is one. Just hit play and enjoy pure bliss.
This is my 4th Zone player (see my other gushing review of the Sonos system on the Sonos bundle page), and anytime my wife asks, "how many of these white boxes you really need?", the answer is always "one more".
Portability is the key feature of S5. Moving it from Kitchen to backdeck is just a matter of unplugging the power cord and replugging at the new location. It's all in one box. And the sound quality is not bad either. With all 4 zone players on party mode - some connected to very expensive Klipsch towers - I have ran around to compare the sound quality at various locations. The verdict - this little guy stacks up nicely against the big boys.
And the iPhone controller is not too shabby either. Don't see the need to buy the new touch controller (CR200).
Awesome product. Pure genius. Just get it.

If you're a mac user, forget it. Do not buy this. It says Mac is supported, but don't even try. Installation manual is strictly for windows, software and drivers are confusing and don't work. I plugged this in and struggled for about 30 minutes to figure out how to make it work (I'm a pretty sophisticated mac user) and it was able to detect my airport signal but had no way for me to enter my password so it could never log on. The software comes on one of those tiny cd-roms so if you have a laptop with a slot-loading drive you can't use this anyway (read: all mac laptops) so you have to download the drivers from the internet, which means you have to have an internet connection, but the reason you're buying this in the first place is because you can't connect to the internet. Then, apparently (I was never able to connect so I don't know) you have to reconnect to the internet everytime you turn on the computer or even wake it up from sleep. They offer an applescript that you have to download and install in order to keep this from happening, but the whole thing is a mess. Forget it.

I have owned another WIFI model called the Alfa AWUS036H adapter for a while and wanted to get a second one for another computer, but then heard about this Gsky adapter which is also 1/2 watt. The maker Blue Proton says on their blog that it is (and I quote) "better than the Alfa AWUS036H", I should have asked them how they concluded that before I bought it, because it does not work nearly as well for me anyway. I have read it has the same chip as the Alfa, but at least the one I received does not, it is a different model of a Realtek chip (B version). The receive sensitivity at 54 mbps is -65 dbm vs -76 dbm of the Alfa (-76 is better). I also found out that the Gsky is only 15 dbm at 802.11g, which would be about 40 or 50 mW, so it isn't really high powered unless you are okay with a slow connection. There is a signal about a block away from me that is open, I get about 0-1 bars with my Buffalo PCMCIA card that is about 4 years old. With the Alfa I am able to get 3-4 bars. With the Gsky it is usually 1 bar, sometimes 2, so a slight improvement over my Buffalo card, but sometimes it is too weak to use the signal. With the Alfa I can use the signal all the time. For people trying to pick up weak signals I would suggest shelling out the extra cash for the Alfa or something else.

HP FH971AA Wireless PCIe x1 Card Review

I spent almost 2 weeks trying to get this card to work with Windows 7 but had nothing to show for it. In the end I sent it back to HP. By the way, HP has horrible support. Every time I called I spoke to someone I couldn't understand or didn't know how to help or they would just keep transferring me until I couldn't take it anymore and hung up. What really annoyed me the most is that I purposely bought this card from HP because I also have an HP Pavillion desktop and I thought it would be a nice pairing expecially since it advertises that it works with windows 7. If HP makes this card and it doesn't even work with their own equiptment, how's it gonna work with differant brands?

Cisco SA520W Security Appliance Review

Cisco SA520W Security Appliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had these in two offices (West Coast/NYC) for a little over a week. The firmware is highly unstable, even after being upgraded to the latest version from Cisco. These were installed by a highly-rated Cisco partner firm for our offices, and after trying to get the most basic features to stick we've all simply given up. The VPN is extremely slow and volatile, settings do not stick in the firmware ("Hey, didn't I just make that a UDP port forward? Why does it default to TCP when the setting is applied and saved?"), DNS errors (that Cisco acknowledged and "fixed") caused unpredictable browsing and Web services for users, there's no command-line interface only GUI, and port forwarding simply does not (even when Cisco support tried to fix it). Terrible routers that it turns out are re-branded Linksys (remember, Cisco bought Linksys not too long ago). Save yourself a headache and start with a 5505 if you're looking at this price point.

Cisco WVC2300 Wireless-G Business Internet Security Video Camera w/Audio Review

Cisco WVC2300 Wireless-G Business Internet Security Video Camera w/Audio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cisco WVC2300 video camera has some pretty impressive features. I wanted a network security camera so I could learn more about the technology in video surveillance. So having options like interchangeable lenses, I/O ports that can facilitate alarm system triggers, turn lights on and off from the camera web interface, two way voice, controls for mounting on a Pelco pan/tilt base to control movement remotely, and PC-less event recording directly to Network Attached Storage via integrated Samba client makes this camera a winner for my needs. It should be noted that this is a business class device that is designed with the pro-consumer and IT professional in mind. It's primary goal was not to be super easy to use and operate. If you're looking for a good super easy setup and basic feature(s) wireless camera with great reviews the Sharx Security VIPcella SCNC2606 Wifi Wireless 802.11g Security Network Camera is a excellent choice for cameras in this price point. Looking to spend a little less? Give a look at the under $100 Foscam FI8918W Wireless camera. If your're a box camera fan you maybe want to check out the ATC® WiFi 2-way audio Box IP Camera H.264 software 720P webcam security CCTV NC531MW H series, which has clear, crisp and extremely good detail picture quality or the new Toshiba IK-WB30A IP/Network Camera with 2 Megapixel 1600x1200 Resolution looks very impressive on paper for everything except the digital zoom :-(
The Cisco WVC2300 video camera Wifi g wireless IP camera has its own built in web server. So it does not need a pc to work. Authentication process requires a user name and password set by the camera's administrator. Here is a quick undocumented tip and or trick, if you need or have the desire to allow everyone to view the camera you can remove the user information from the demo account. You can view the video from your own home network or you can configure your router to view and control the camera from computers or cellphones on the internet, without dependence on any third party web sites or subscriptions. I also must give credit to the NETGEAR WNR3500L RangeMax Wireless-N300 Gigabit Router with USB as it was easy to setup the camera to be connected from the internet. It performs better than average for a wireless camera in it's price range likely because of the MIMO technology. I have not seen any other wireless security camera offer this feature. Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) technology is a wireless technology that uses multiple transmitters and receivers to transfer more data at the same time. MIMO technology leverages multipath behavior by using multiple, "smart" transmitters and receivers with an added "spatial" dimension to dramatically increase performance and range. MIMO allows multiple antennas to send and receive multiple spatial streams at the same time. This allows antennas to transmit and receive simultaneously. I've not had connection drops or slower video on this system and it's more than 75ft away from the wireless router on a different floor. If you decide to go with a network cable install it also supports POE Power over ethernet which is very cool. From my understanding the POE function does not work while the camera is in wireless mode. I love the freedom of wireless personally and you can put the camera almost anywhere. It does not have to be permanently in one location because of cables.
It is very well built and feels pretty heavy and solid. It is longer than I thought around 8 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide. In order to protect the camera from electrical surge(s) and or unexpected lost of power I put the unit on a small ups. I can't tell you how many devices fail or die to soon because they are not properly protected (Best Buy had a CyberPower - 425VA SL-Series Battery Backup System for 29.99). Also if you unplug the camera or experience a power outage the camera may get confused and go back to ethernet mode and not wireless. This may cause some to believe the camera no longer works. To fix this issue if it happens simply reconnect to a wired connection and set it back to DHCP if you previously had a static address and power off then on without the cable to force back to wireless. You may have to find the new address on the router or wireless access point for the new wireless connection. Another reviewer stated some good practical advice (for any computer hardware) regarding downloading the newest update(s)"Firmware Version: 1.1.2.6" was the latest release for download when I purchased this camera. Also downloaded the monitoring console software and other items too like the video surveillance software that allows you to setup a recording schedule and storing the video on a pc. I was surprised that it already had a microphone built-in, but the speakers needed to be purchased separately, and they need to be powered speakers. Two way audio works, but a good deal of background noise (fairly soft), but very noticeable was experienced as well. I had a better experience using the half-duplex and not full-duplex option setting for the 2-way audio, so you can't talk and listen at the same time, but it cuts the amount of noise and interference. It is easy enough to toggle between talking and listening. In general you get basic picture size options going up to 640*480 and the typical Brightness, Sharpness, Contrast, control settings to adjust the picture. This is an adjustable cs mount 6 mm lens. You can adjust the focus camera by slowly rotating clockwise or counterclockwise the very tip of the barrel of the lens base that is closest to you. I had to manually focus the camera to adjust for a clear and sharper image. After the focus was corrected it's got good picture quality. For a optional lens, you can use any c/cs mount and Cisco offers some custom ones for $$$ I would not recommend the Computar Wide Angle 2.3mm (which was not as sharp or clear as the stock lens) unless you need a really wide viewing area like a parking lot, but I've really enjoyed the Fujinon-3-11MM varifocal lens which allows both wide and narrower field of view(s).The DC-iris control connection from this len's is a four-pin standard plug that fits directly into the camera's iris output. The len's delivered impressive optical quality due to the high standards for resolution, contrast reproduction, and coating. The night feature works in extremely lower light, but not in total darkness. You can purchase IR units to resolve this i.e. Pinecom PN850 48 IR LED Illuminator. Motion Sensor was not as important to me, as it will be on 24x7. In this price range most software packages that come with the wireless security camera have a pretty basic limited motion sensor features. You may want to give a look at the Triple Sensor Technology (Body Heat Sensor, Motion Sensor, and Sound Sensor)on the Panasonic BL-C230A Wireless Internet Security Camera if motion detection is a primary concern. I did complete a simple configuration of motion detection and set it to email me when motion occurred. Both video and still jpeg attachment options worked fine. The picture looks great on the ipod touch and the new iphone 4, but audio controls are only available on the MS Internet Explorer browser. Also the camera has a shallow tripod hole and it can be a issue with standard tripod mount screws, so the unit may not be a tight fit on pan / tilt units. Overall value of this unit comes from its ability to be useful in many different environments because of wide range of possible options.

If they improve the following this would be a 5 star wireless camera.
A camera in this price range should have a memory slot for data storage.
Include a Pelco pan/tilt motorized unit (Most likely would move this camera out of the price range)AS20RS485 Indoor/Outdoor Pan/Tilt Camera Scanner appears to be compatible for around $140... If you just need a indoor pan/tilt option that can be set in a loop cycle then just get X-10 Ninja Pan & Tilt Camera Mount Kit - Model VK74A for around $40. If you want to be able to control a indoor pan/tilt unit over the internet using the WVC2300 cameras web interface (like me) the 3030WQ with Transformation decoder board about $40 - $50 plus shipping worked out pretty good.
Include a interchangeable camera lens i.e.3-11MM varifocal lens

Enable the audio controls in other browsers not just MS Internet Explorer
When you bring up the console homepage the default volume is set too high! (Maybe a setting I over looked, but if not they really should fix in the next update).
802.11n wireless network capable and go ahead and add a 3rd Antenna
Enable POE option when the camera is operating in wireless mode (Like other Cisco products i.e. Wireless Access points)
IR Night Vision i.e. RAYMAX 25 suitable for all low light installations up to 20 metres (66ft)or maybe the POE option Raymax 25 IP. If you need something a little more affordable maybe look at the Pinecom PN850 48 IR LED Illuminator (I like it)

I've read a couple of reviews that suggested they had problems getting different brands to link up.
I wanted to add my experience as a counterpoint, in that this worked fine for me.
I bought this adapter, the XAV2001 to supplement my existing Linksys PLK300 adapter kit. I was interested in the connectivity LED that shows the speed of the connection. That LED also works.
This worked flawlessly out of the box. It connected without any trouble to the two Linksys adapters, so apparently the Homeplug AV specification means something. All the adapters are of the 200mb AV type.
I did *not* try setting the security. I have little expectation that Linksys and Netgear can agree on that. If I try it, I'll edit this post.

First off, i am a cisco guy, i work with their products on a daily basis. Although does box here is pretty good for the monies worth. You can down load the latest SDM (GUI Management Software) and have this up and running (and pretty secured) in a matter of minutes.
For first time users, my advise...Read the manual, try out the SDM and read line for line what the SDM tells/asks you. don't go clicking on next next next as if it's a microsoft application. Take your time and follow the SDM and you will get the results that you desire.

I bought this phone because I needed a phone that would give me better range than my panasonic 5.8gHz model without the interference with my computer equipment. I live in a pretty good sized house, ( 3 stories, 6000 sq. ft., lots of steel too). My 5.8 gHz model didn't quite cut it for range from one side of the house to the other. I really started seeing problems when they installed my wireless network for the house. I did some research and found out that the interference issue was common with 5.8 gHz and the wireless router because they operate on the same bandwidth and therefore can have some interference issues. As for the range, I was out of luck until I found this phone that has an included " range extender ". Set-up for the phone was very easy, ( 6 steps including " insert batteries and charge for 7 hours"). I put the range extender at about the distance where my 5.8 gHz started to fuzz out. This is easily installed as well. All you need is a power outlet, no phone jack. After the charging period, I tried the phone everywhere in the house with no issues. I can even go down to the lake to watch the kids with no issues. Also, from reading the directions, I noted that you can add one more range extender to increase your range even more. I think panasonic really got the idea right when they made this phone and included the range extender. I would have to say that my only disappointment is the handset display size and that it is not in color. If you are looking for a solid phone system with great range and no computer interference issues, you can't go wrong with this phone. Buy it! You won't be sorry.

Belkin F5U301 CableFree 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub with Dongle Review

Belkin F5U301 CableFree 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub with Dongle

A wireless USB hub is very appealing. The implementation of this one makes it useless.
The software only runs on Windows XP. There are no Vista drivers. The hub does not work until you've logged in and even then, it takes a few seconds. Since you have to have log in before the hub will work, your mouse and keyboard can't be plugged in to the wireless hub. This also means that USB audio devices that must be plugged in at boot will not work. I don't understand why Windows requires USB audio devices to be plugged in at boot, but that's Microsoft's fault, not Belkins.
It gets better. Yesterday, we rebooted the machine and my brother logged in with his account. The wireless hub didn't work at all because the software wasn't installed for him. Why would the installer even bother installing this software for only one user? No problem, we installed the software on his account. Reboot. Everything seemed to work. Fast user switch to my account and the software freaks out because the software running on his account is using the device. The USB devices attached to that hub go offline.
To Summarize:
- No Vista support
- Can't use it for keyboard/mouse
- No support for multiple user accounts
- Fast user switching messes it up
However tempted you may be, don't buy this product until they address these issues. This product is not ready for prime time. On the plus side, it seems like all of these problems are just related to software. If Belkin decides to, they could probably fix all of these problems in software.

Intellinet 524827 Guestgate Mk Ii Wireless 300N Hotspot Gateway Review

Intellinet 524827 Guestgate Mk Ii Wireless 300N Hotspot Gateway

We are using this gateway for our church, and it's working great. It's setup so anyone can connect to our wifi, and when connected they can only access our church website or enter a password to access the full internet. It displays a friendly message much like popular coffee shops with our guidelines for using the network, and explains how to find the password (we want visitors to come inside, not just sit out on the street).
The setup was pretty easy, the biggest inconvenience is you have to reboot after every change. The features are a bit limited because it's designed to do one thing, and one thing only: Provide guest internet access. You can tell it a list of computers to always allow access, and do some fancy stuff with certain passwords working at certain times. We also plugged multiple Linksys routers into this unit to expand the coverage around the church. The Guestgate protects both the wireless and wired networks so we didn't have to do anything fancy there.
The only feature I wish it had but didn't, was some way to make the allow list the only people who can access the private network. We have a printer that office staff needs to print to when connected wirelessly. It seems to only allow all access or no access to specific computers on the private network. The printer we have is on a random IP, uses specific drivers, and has password protection, so chances are nobody is going to figure out how to get into it. But it'd be nice if we knew for sure they couldn't.
