(More customer reviews)I can't fathom why anybody would actually buy this product. Across the board, everything about it is just plain wrong.
Powerline networking is a relatively good idea, but it looks like the marketing department at D-Link got together one day to see what kind of products they could cram it in to. With this surveillance camera, the implementation is sloppy and unnecessary.
Keep in mind too, that Powerline networking isn't always as straightforward as plugging in a "wall wort" and connecting ethernet to it. If you're using any multi-outlet adapters, or if your home's wiring isn't nearly pristine, the experience can be almost as painful as just running CAT5 cable through your house.
The camera itself is massive compared to any web cam made in the past decade, and assembling it to the base is needlessly complicated for what it is. On the plus side, the base is quite heavy, so it isn't going to be knocked down easily. On the other hand, you absolutely must use wall anchors if you plan to mount the camera on a wall. And given the size of this camera, it's so large and obvious that your baby and pets are the only ones who aren't going to notice it.
Perhaps the most mind boggling issue I have with this kit, is that you can't host it yourself. To see what's on the camera, you have to go to D-Link's site (which is simply not possible if you aren't using Windows and Internet Explorer) and create an account. Once you've done that, you can only see the camera through D-Link's site.
I'm not typically a paranoid person, but that really raised an "Are you serious?" from me. Why the heck would you have a camera in your home broadcasting to D-Link's site? What stops D-Link from peeking in? And perhaps more importantly, what happens if D-Link goes under, or decides that they're just not interested in offering the service anymore? More likely than not, you'll be left with expensive, useless junk.
Don't get me wrong, I can see the value in offering a camera that "just works", but not having the option to host it yourself, and being locked in to Internet Explorer are ridiculous barriers.

(More customer reviews)I bought DCS910 in Nov.2008 and DCS920 one month later. I am quite satisfied with both of them and I did not meet any problem till now, or say I could solve the problems that I have found.
The network attached camera supports up to 640x480 in resolution. It is higher then lots of other network attached camera which has only 320x240. So the image quality is quite good. It has good vision in dim light. you could see image or video on your web browser. It supports both MS ActiveX and Sun Java for live video monitoring but it does NOT support sound :(
You may need to install ActiveX control plug-in and Sun Java plug-in for your browser to support live video.
The supplied DViewCam software also supports monitoring up to 32 cameras and you could record videos into computer hard disk. I have not used video record feture till now because it requires turning on computer and consumes too much router/switch band width. I think check from web from time to time is good enough for my needs.
It support user account management, NTP time sync, DDNS name service, FTP and email deliver of photos at the frequency you defined.
The device does not support SSL protocol, so your password could not be encrypted for delivery. So you could not use https or ftps for secured communication. But this is understandable because encryption cost too much resources for the embeded system. You could not expect too much from tiny embeded device. Anyway, normal web access and FTP upload are good enough if you do not have too much security concern.
It is quite simple to access the device from within the internal/home network because you PC and the camera are in the same network segment. But if you want to access the device from external/Internet, there are some other things to take care. You need to have some basic networking concept for the setup.
I have seen one user complain the tech support and blame the device to be not usable. I could understand the mensioned situation. It is not the user's fault nor the product's fault. Tech support is not wrong on what they said but they should explain clearly on the technical background and guide the user for a smooth set up. User is not network expert so it will be a little difficult for them to understand and follow the network rules.
Normally, ISP will only give one dynamic IP address to a user. The IP address will change when you turn on the router or after a certain period of time. So you need to keep track to your current IP address on the WAN port of your router. This is usually done by register a DDNS service(free or paid service). Most router support DDNS auto update service and this camera also supports it but you need to set it up in your device. All the devices in your home network will share this single IP address. Network applications will monitor communication port for TCP/IP communication. Different devices in your network have different unique IP address. The IP address for a specific device is unique in the network. So if you want to access your camera through the internet in a remote location, you need to have DDNS service set; set up a internal static IP address to your camera; setup your router port forward to your camera IP address. For example, use http://dcs910.mydomainname.com:9011/ to access your camera, you need to buy(or register a free child domain name from some website) your domain name 'mydomainname.com'; register your domain name to a DDNS server(paid or free service); setup your router to auto update DDNS for your current IP address; set router to forward 9011 port request to the 80 port of the static internal IP address that you have assigned to your camera(such as 192.168.0.3 depends on the settings on your router and camera). You may need an experienced friend to help you for the setting.
Even if you have set everything correctly, it not necessarily means you could watch live video in your office. You should be able to access static current image from web browser in your office but live video is another story. Normally office network is protected by firewall on gateway. Most office firewall uses proxy and only open ports for web requests and some predefined application ports and bann all other communications. The ActiveX and Java live video of this device may need dedicated port connection to open communication session but this will not be allowed by default on the proxy. So unless you know your network administrator and could ask them open the port for you, you will not able to access live video in office. This is not the problem of the device, it is the rule of the network security. But anyway, you could see still image of your home which is good enough.
I have used my DCS910 and DCS920 for 3 months and I am quite satisfied with the device. I would like to highly recommand this device to you for its clear image, easy setup(if you understand networking in and out), and resonable price.

(More customer reviews)I am an experienced IT guy, but this camera has me tearing my hair out! First, a major warning: the spec sheet states that the camera can take 640x480 pics. This is NOT TRUE - the maximum available resolution is 320x240.
The wireless interface is buggy and cumbersome to work with, and when I tried to set it up it not only crashed the camera several times, it crashed my entire wireless network. Thinking that a D-link 624+ WLAN router might work better with it than my Netgear, I tried that too and got the same crashes. I even saw the radio communication from the camera forcing the router to reset itself - how's that for interoperability?
Finally, after fiddling with every possible setting (few of which are explained in the manual) and trying various WLAN channels (no, the camera does not auto-detect, you have to set the channel manually which also often causes a crash) I got it to work, just about. Now the brand-new D-link router is acting up instead *sigh* and loses connection to the net.
Further, the camera can send images by ftp or e-mail, but not both at the same time.
I highly recommend going with some other brand, and using a standard network camera together with an ethernet-WLAN dongle instead of a combined product. That way you can also test WLAN connectivity with a computer before setting up your camera.

Creative Live Wireless Internet Camera System Review

(More customer reviews)I really NEEDED to like it, too. Trying to figure why my dog keeps going crazy during the day and I needed a wireless webcam to do it. But this is just not cutting it.
First of all, it's really not wireless, which you already know if you read the installation info on the Amazon page. You have to plug it into the wireless server, and then you have to plug the server into a power outlet. Not the most ideal set up, but I really needed it, so I figured I'd try it anyway.
Problem #1, the camera is so light, it won't even stand up by itself. The cord keeps pulling it over.
Problem #2, it's supposed to be easy to install, and apparently everyone on here thinks it is, but it was giving me fits. I got as far as it telling me to unplug the temporary network cable, and then it asked if I wanted to set it up for the internet, and I said yes, and everything was downhill from there. It wouldn't find the camera at all without the network cable plugged in, and even when I had it plugged in, it would find the camera, but kept timing out trying to connect to it. And the couple times I did get the connection, it would drop almost immediately.
I finally "deleted" the camera, and ran the wizard again to install it, and said NO to the set up for web question, and then it worked.
However, problem #3, it can't see outside at all. I tried pointing it out the window and it was completely washed out, you could see a very faded tree and that was it. I thought maybe it was a reflection problem with the window, so I opened the window, and same thing. I have read about cameras not being able to see in the dark, but this one can't see when it's too bright, apparently.
The other complaint that I have is that they tout this wireless bundle as a security thing... monitor your house from the internet, etc. But then the camera they bundle it with is a regular webcam, not a wide angle. If you're going to try to monitor a room, then you need wide angle. All it is is a USB webcam and a wireless server, it should have been easy for them to just put the Live Ultra (I think that's the wide angle one) in there instead of the Live. Or maybe sell the server separate so you can buy whatever webcam you want.
Oh, and my other gripe is that the phone tech support is only open M-F during normal business hours, so if you need help setting it up, you have to call from work. In which case, you won't have access to any of the equipment while you call, so they can't walk you through problems.
Annnd, one more thing... I was wishing that the software it came with had the same features as the Web Cam Center software (only for multiple cameras.) I like the feature that records a photo every 10 seconds and stores them on the hard drive... that way I can just put it in thumbnail view and browse through until I see something in the frame that's not supposed to be there. With the software that this comes with, it will take a photo every how-ever-many seconds, but then it puts it together in a movie, so unless you know what time something happened, you'd have to watch the whole movie in order to see anything.

InGrid SK804IG Basic Monitoring Kit for 1500 Square Foot Homes Review

I want everyone to be aware of a couple things:
1.) In spite of the fact you pay a premium for the equipment, it completely diactivates should you ever cancel the service, and you are left with a bunch of useless equipment.
2.) There is a 2 year minimum contract
3.) Also, even though there is no finincial risk to InGrid should you cancel early, they slap you with a $175 early termination fee if you should cancel before 2 years.You might want to be aware of these things before you buy.
I should add that I tried to cancel my service immediatly after becoming aware of these things after reading their SLA, and the lady on the phone was about as insistent I stat as an AOL
rep, and lo and behold they still shipped out the order today and charged my credit card (I canceled 2 hours after placing the order, after hours, and here it is 3pm the next day and they
shipped it anyways, so I'm sure the request to cancel was completely ignored)

The product description for the Lorex Wireless Easy Connect Pan/Tilt Network IP Remote Surveillance Camera reads: "Lorex's new Pan Tilt Wireless Easy Connect Network Camera allows users to remotely monitor their business or home through a secure, password protected connection that requires no networking knowledge." I must take issue with the 'easy' in the name of the product and the 'no networking knowledge.'
Once I found and paid someone who does this kind of thing for a living, I discovered that the camera system itself is quite good. The images are clear and illumination a welcome bonus. But there is no way I could have installed it myself.
However, even my professional installer found the Lorex directions to be useless.
So if you're looking for an easy-to-install system, look elsewhere. But if you're willing to pay for help installing a rather pricey system, then you might want to give it a go. And keep in mind that it's wireless - you need a router.
Note to Lorex: You have a fine product with shoddy installation instructions, and you need to be clearer about system/set up requirements. That should be an easy enough problem for a good tech writer to solve.

Nortech Security 2.4GHz Wireless Color Security System Review

I got mine a few days ago and tested it out on two VCRs (one of them was a vcr and dvd combination). Dispite 'many' failed attempts at getting the camera's receiver to record on a vhs tape--I finally succeeded. It turns out my equipment was bad--the security camera and equipment work fine. My equipment chewed up two of my classic monster movies--well, need I tell you 'that's that for them'! I chugged on down to one of those big boxes 'marts' and got a brand new Magnavox VCR/DVD player. I recommend them ($53.00) because I've had a ton of trouble with DVDs.
As an old techno, I won't take that from a machine. So I got one basically designed to take the dust coveroff so I can hand clean the Laser reader head on the DVD...it's the ONLY fix...with a Q tip and a drop of rubbing alcohol.
Now, to the reason I'm writing this review. PROS and CONS;
PROS;
1. It works fine, night and day.
2. In my ten by ten foot bedroom, in near total dark, it lights up nicely.
3. Easy to put to gether.
4. Easy to install.
5. VCR recording is simple (that's a star right there).
CONS;
1. Uses something like a 'infinity focus' so it can focus on objects a few feet away to longer distance. I feel this is a mistake, after twenty feet, the image becomes fuzzy. Even my computer camera has a 'twist' focus lense I can focus on something close, or refocus on something futher away (sharper image this way). (no loss of a star here).
2. Yes, it is in color--BUT, if you have direct sunlight it will wash out the image...making your lawn appear white. (no loss of a star here either.) You know when the sky is milky colored from smog or high humidity--with the sun behind a house but still facing the camera--and causing the sky around it to glow white--these particals of reflected light will wash out your image and change its' color.
3. When the sun starts going down, twilight, a dozen or so round holes on the camera's front light up red with LEDS. Not something you'll want to wake up to some early morning (a big red eye staring at you unblinking). -- no big thing, the diodes (LEDs) aren't bright.
4. I want all of you (who don't have one of these cameras) to remember--Wirless doesn't mean 'no wires. It means you don't run a wire to the Receiver. You still have to plug the cameras in, they are not battery operated.
5. The instructions are a little short--but direct to the point. They do not tell you how to plug it into a VCR, or that the image can be taped. (It can).
That's basically it, for now. It is worth the price, the unitssmall and kinda 21st century in looks--silver in color. As an oldtechno, I don't think you'll beat the price for quality. I have noticed the 'brick' (that's the part you plug in) does seem to get a little warm. Oh yes, as another reviewer mentioned,...you can't place these things up against a windowpane, it will reflect its' own image back when night time comes and all you will see is that 'red' eye.
Finally, the red cable plugs into the audio on the front of your VCR. The yellow cable plugs into the video (that's the other plug in on the front of your VCR--at least on my model) Your tv must be set to AV for you to get an image from the cameras on it and to record the image. If you don't understand that, it means plug the security receiver into the same place you plug a camcorder.

So I ordered 3 of these extra cameras. I think the color daytime image is pretty good although not HD. What I really liked is that it has audio recording. Audio is pretty good and does what I need it to do. I wanted the microphone for my front door and so I can hear what is going on without going downstairs. These are indoor/outdoor cameras. Just plug into power, install camera with three screws and it automatically detects the DVR, plug into any TV or monitor to view(sold separately). Pretty good quality and A+ for easy to set up.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera 2 weeks ago and put it above my front door looking out onto my walkway and street and it works great. It's 802.11 G/B so it scales back if you have only a B access point. It takes good 640/480 up to 30 frames per second video. It's got a couple of low light enhancements you can turn on which work pretty well. DONT be disappointed if it can't see in the dark it's NOT a night vision camera. However... I don't yet know if it can see IR. I guess I need to get out a remote and see what happens.So a few people posting reviews have said it's not easy to setup. Not True!! I guess if you don't know anything about home networking, port forwarding, or WIFI then yeah of course it's going to be hard to setup. But don't come bashing the product just because you lack the skills to set it up correctly. Now I will admit I'm a IT professional and make a living doing so but, anyone with basic networking skills should be able to get this camera working in 10 minutes. Now... That doesn't include the time to tweak all the settings as it will take several days and some time to get everything just how you want it.
I got an iPhone that I use all the time to watch streaming video. In fact I used the iPhone to setup the camera using it as my hand held display so I could see what the camera was seeing.
One thing I will mention that I'm not really fond of is the motion detection system. If you turn it on, it requires you to choose either FTP or Email for the alerts. The problem is that even with the sensitivity really low it still triggers and you get like 10 million emails. Now that's not entirely the blame of the camera cause every time a cloud goes over my house the sidewalk changes because of the lighting and causes the camera to trigger a motion detection event. But if you were using the camera inside your house it would most likely function much better.
The camera comes with a CD that has some recording software that works ok. I've had it crash more than once in the past two weeks but it seems to happen when you have the motion detection enabled to send videos via Email. I switched this feature to JPEG's instead of motion and the application hasn't crashed since.
The camera does do audio but only when watching the playback on the software or using IE 6.0 or greater to watch the live video directly from the camera. I.E. you can't hear the sound with Firefox or Safari. However, you can adjust all the settings and get it going without IE so if you're a Mac person like myself you will need to have access to a PC at some point especially since the recording software, motion detection, and live video viewing with sound portion of the camera uses a Active X control that only works in IE.
All in all this Camera is an Awesome camera for $107. It did everything I wanted and more and it works well. I ended up buying 2 more of them since I was so pleased with the first one.
Just make sure before you buy this that you meet the following requirements.
A. Know what your doing when it comes to networking or you will be disappointed as with any network device it takes a level of skill to set it up.
B. Make sure you have access to a PC to setup all the things that require and Active X control and IE 6.0 or greater
C.Don't expect the device to see in the dark with great precission
D. Remember that you only paid $107 for something that does almost as much some of the other expensive stationary network cameras on the market.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera for my sister, who just had a new baby. I wanted a wireless web came with two way audio, so that she could take it from room to room. I couldn't find a simple wireless webcam, so I bought this thing, which does way more than I wanted. Luckily, I like gadgets, and this is one neat gadget. However, its very difficult to setup if you want to use some of its advanced capabilities. Since the manual does not give very good instructions, I'll try to describe the basic things you need to do to set it up, as well as provide an overview of what it does. Do not buy this camera if you are not comfortable configuring your router. Someone who doesn't have basic networking skills would probably give this camera one star.
Pros
1) Can be an excellent security camera. The motion detection software works well, and the IR night vision is very good. The two way audio over the internet means you can speak to people it sees. It can be setup to send an email to your cell phone, and then you can log onto it with a PC and view and speak to your intruders or guests. It can also record video clips to network storage, although I couldn't get it to mount a shared windows directory. It seems to want a linux based shared drive.
2)The video quality is good, although not what you would call high quality. It's a little bit jerky, but that's what you get with this technology.
3) Has a nice mounting bracket that you can screw to a wall. The bracket has a tilt swivel mount on it like a camera tripod mount, so you can easily attach/detach the camera from the mount. This means you can carry it from room to room when using as a webcam, then put it back on the wall mount to use it as a security camera.
4)The included software can view multiple cameras at the same time, with each camera being displayed in a tile, just like a professional security camera system.
Cons
1)Horrible setup. If you don't know how to configure your wireless router, you won't be able to view this camera over the Internet. See below. However, if you only want to view it from a PC on your local network, and don't need the email notices when it detects motion, you can set this thing up just fine. This means you can't use it as a webcam, though. The instructions do not tell you anything about configuring your router to do this.
2) No autofocus. How do you focus a wireless camera that is in a different room than the computer monitor you use for viewing the camera? You can't, because you can't turn the manual focus ring and see the results as you turn it. This makes for a lot of back and forth to get the thing focused. The solution is to bring your wireless laptop with you as you move the camera.
3)Won't mount a windows shared directory. Technical support has yet to answer my email about this. Basically, this means you can't have it automatically record video clips to your PC when it detects motion. You can still record video clips manually, through the software interface, though, even onto a PC over the Internet.
4)No tilt/pan. Some cameras in this price range come with tilt/pan. I sacrificed it to get the two way audio and the IR night vision. The field of view is pretty wide, so I don't really miss the tilt/pan.
Setup tips
Most people's wireless router will have a dynamic IP address assigned to it by your Internet provider. Computers and cameras on your wireless network will have private IP addresses that are not routable to the Internet. By default, this camera wants to use 192.168.10.30 as its IP address. Your router may not recognize this private address. Mine was setup to only use a 192.168.1.x network. I had to reconfigure the router's private network to the 192.168.10.x network to talk to the camera.
Furthermore, there is no way to view the camera on that private network from a PC over the Internet. However, you can configure your router to route incoming requests from the Internet to the camera. You have to set up ports 80 and 554 to be redirected to the camera's private IP. Next, you have to be able to find your routers external dynamic IP address from a web browser on an Internet PC. The only way to do that is to sign up for a dynamic DNS service. When your router gets its IP assignment, it will report it to the dynamic DNS service, who will map it to a URL that you will type in your browser. Once set up, you view your camera over the Internet by typing in your URL. The dynamic DNS service sends your browser to your router's IP address, then your router redirects the request to the internal private IP address of the camera. A similar redirect would be needed if you were running a hardware firewall on your network. Note, the camera does have the ability to report its IP address to a dynamic DNS service, too. Only use this if the camera's IP address is actually routable over the Internet. Most of us will have the camera on a private network, with an IP address that is not routable. In this cae, if you use the dynamic DNS from the camera, instead of your router, it will not work.
If you want to setup email from the camera, you need to be able to configure it to talk to your provider's SMTP server. It's very similar to setting up an email client, so if you can do that, you can do this. It can send email and record pics/vid without you having to setup that dynamic DNS, thankfully. You only need the dynamic DNS if you want to view it over the internet.

(More customer reviews)As a 24/7 caregiver for my wife, this camera has made a wonderful contribution to our life together. I'm constantly alert to her safety and needs when we are together, but always a little anxious when I'm away from her room. Now, she's visible whenever those anxieties arise, either on my computer or on my iPhone.
Setup was very simple. We needed to run a 75 foot Ethernet Cat5E cable from the camera to our router; the unit comes with a 13 footer. The company's service was superb; their response to my question arrived within 24 hours: "The Dropcam product or router will neither affect the ethernet signal as the performance will be due to the quality of the ethernet cable itself as well as various environmental factors such as EM interference. Under normal circumstances, I personally would not anticipate any issues with a 75 foot cable."
The camera could be improved with a simple cover that would allow the user to turn it off or on (I use a wash cloth draped over the camera to block transmissions, but worry a bit about overheating the unit). I would hate to see my wife featured on a pirated YouTube video, especially during some of our more intimate caregiving activities.
And, I'd be similarly concerned if I was monitoring a home safe, and images could be pirated with enough definition to read the combination.
But, for everyday monitoring of my wife while I'm off washing clothes or dishes, cooking, walking the dogs, running to the store -- anytime when I'm away for a few minutes -- it's wonderful to be able to see her on demand.
In other caregiving applications, I could see mounting the unit close to the floor showing only the legs and feet of the person being cared for. If they fell, of course, their entire body would be visible. The unit also comes with a sound feed -- the Dropcam Echo Wireless IP Home Security Camera with Audio and Online Recording -- which we may upgrade to, but hasn't seemed necessary to us so far.

(More customer reviews)For several years I have been waiting for an affordable, wireless, outdoor IP camera to hit the market, and it looks like it has finally arrived. After 3 weeks of summer 90-degree heat, high humidity and torrential thunder storms in Georgia, I'm happy to report this camera continues to hum along just great. I have not had to reset it once, and have monitored it remotely via my Moto Droid almost daily (using the free IP Cam Lite viewer, which delivers the full 640x480 live feed). I use this camera to monitor my driveway and it serves its purpose with beautiful daytime color, excellent night vision, and better-than-expected low-light performance. I have it set to record video upon motion detection and FTP it to my ReadyNAS server, and it has worked flawlessly. Of course, the nighttime insects of the Southeast trip it almost constantly at night, but you can fully adjust the motion zones and sensitivity to minimize on false tripping. I have not seen a better camera with the feature set of this camera at this price point, and if it holds out in the coming months I will definitely be purchasing more to cover other zones around the house. My father has been running one in Texas for a little longer than I have and he's thoroughly pleased with it as well. I'll provide an update a few months from now.
Update [February 5, 2011] - Just a quick note to say that the camera has still been working flawlessly, 24/7, for 6 months now. Outside operating temperatures have ranged from the 100 degrees to 13 degrees and it just keeps on working. I don't know why it has on again/off again availability on Amazon, as this is clearly the best outdoor wireless IP camera that they sell. However, apparently you can still order it directly from Sharx.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this camera mainly to use with my Smart Phone. It was easy to setup and can now view live video on my phone or any of my PC's.
I use this camera mainly to view wildlife behind my house. I have motion detector flood lights that light up the area at night, so I normally don't need the Moonlight Mode, although it does work great in low light.
The attached video was taken at night without using the Moonlight Mode. I'll attach another video showing what a video looks like with Moonlight Mode turned on.
This is an amazing camera and has a very sharp picture. I do wish it had an external mic jack like my SCNC2601. The audio is much louder and more sensitive when using an external mic. An external mic jack is on my wish list for the next smart phone supported model. :-)
Comparing this camera to my SCNC2601, I would say the SCNC2606 has a sharper picture but I do like the SCNC2601 for it's Pan and Tilt capabilities and its external mic and speaker jacks. Both are great cameras and work great locally or over the internet.

After researching the network cameras for several months, it seemed that only Panasonic cameras consistently received positive (usually glowing reviews) whereas cameras from other major brands like Linksys, D-Link, etc received mediocre or poor reviews. So I went with Panasonic. And after about a month, I have to say I am very impressed with it. Some background: I have a classic Linksys WRT54G 802.11g router, with 2 WinXP PCs connected to it via ethernet and 3 more PCs connected wirelessly; plus, I have AT&T/SBC DSL service via a Speedstream 5100 DSL modem. If you're moderately computer literate, you should have no problem following the included instructions to setup (view and control) the camera in wired mode or in wireless WiFi mode.
But if you want to setup the camera to be viewed (and controlled) from the internet, you need to do a bit more work. And this is where Panasonic's excellent, excellent customer support comes in. Panasonic's support line is 8_0_0-2_7_2-7_0_3_3; they are open Mon-Fri 9AM-9PM and Sat/Sun 10AM-7PM Eastern US Time; this tech support is available to you for the LIFE of the product. They will walk you through how to setup the camera, configure your router (for, among other things, port forwarding), and register with Panasonic's FREE Dynamic DNS web service. This last point is important: Panasonic network cameras include FREE Dynamic DNS hosting service for the life of the product; other brands offer the service for an annual fee.
Okay, step-by-step, here's how to config the camera for internet viewing:
First, if you use DSL as I do (as opposed to cable broadband), you have to configure the DSL modem for "bridge mode." (If you don't use DSL, then you can skip this step.) This is because DSL modems act as a router, and port forwarding cannot work behind both the DSL modem's router and (in my case) the Linksys WRT54G router. If you want, you can call your DSL tech support to ask them to walk you through how to "bridge" your DSL modem. But here's what I did.
1. Login to your DSL modem (for me, it's 192.168.0.1) using your DSL account (for me, it's my SBCglobal email address).
2. Select Advanced >> PPP Location
3. Select Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used), then Change PPP Location
4. When prompted, restart the DSL modem
5. Login to your router (for me, it's 192.168.1.1)
6. Under Setup> Basic Setup >> Internet Connection Type, select PPPoE and enter the DSL login & password info you normally would enter in your DSL modem to authenticate your DSL service.
7. At this point, the "bridging" should have been successful. To check that bridging has been successful, click Status >> Router, and check that you are "connected" with an IP address showing. If successful, you should also see that your DSL modem's "internet" LED light is off while your router's "internet" light is on. What you basically have done is to move the point of authentication for your DSL service from the DSL modem to your router; your DSL modem merely acts as a bridge for the DSL service to your router.
8. Now, we move on to configuring the camera itself. I assume that the camera has already been configured for wired and wireless mode. Login to the network camera (for me it's, 192.168.1.253).
9. Click Setup. Change the Port No. from the default of 80 to 50000 (fifty thousand) and enter the IP address of the camera (for me, it's 192.168.1.253). Click Save, and the camera will restart. When it finishes restarting (taking as long as 1.5 min), it'll bring you back to the "Top" home page of the camera config screen.
10. Log back into your router, and go to Applications & Gaming, where you'll be able to set up port forwarding.
11. In the Port Range, enter 50000 as "Start" and 50000 as "End." Enter the IP Address of the camera (for me, 192.168.1.253). Check Enable. Save Settings.
12. Now, log back into your camera. Go to Setup >> DynamicDNS. Select viewnetcam-dot-com, then Next.
13. Click on "Your Account Link" to bring up the viewnetcam.com registration page, where you then select New Registration. Enter your desired registration info and select your domain name at viewnetcam-dot-com (e.g. yourname-dot-viewnetcam-dot-com). Click Choose.
14. Now, you will be shown a page confirming your registration. Under DDNS status, you will see Active-waiting. You need to wait up to 10min as the domain registration occurs, at which time, the status will change to Active.
15. We're almost done; stay with me! From WinXP Start Menu, click Run and type "cmd" to bring up a DOS window.
16. In the DOS window, type "ipconfig/all", which shows your computer's various network information. Under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, copy down the two addresses under DNS Servers.
17. Log back into your camera, select Setup, and enter the 2 DNS Server addresses from ipconfig/all in the 2 DNS boxes.
18. Go back to viewnetcam-dot-com, login to your account, and check that the DDNS status is now Active. If so, then you're all ready to go!
19. Go to yourname-dot-viewnetcam-dot-com:50000 to see your network camera on the internet!

This all-in-one system contains everything you need to setup and record a 4 camera surveillance system in your home or business.
For my installation, I did not need to buy anything extra or subscribe to any monthly service to use the system. I can now access the system through any computer in the world as long as it has internet access. I can also access footage by using my smart-phone when I am on the go.
I really do recommend the Defender SN500-4CH-002 system for anyone looking for an affordable 4ch DVR security system with web and smartphone access.
