(More customer reviews)I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

I use this for my iMac's to connect to the router and network storage drive which are in a separate room.
The communication between everything is now much improved and more responsive.
As an added bonus everything I stream from the computer to wireless Apple AirPorts and Apple TV's has improved by replacing the old bottle neck switch.

Plug in your Ethernet cables, plug in the switch. So simple a non-techie significant other could do it.
I was using a four port switch but with the addition of a networked TV, blueray player, apple tv... i was running out of available ports.
I ordered this and received the usual super fast shipping from Amazon. Packaging was excellent.
From the time I unpacked the switch to the time i was done (including moving the old 4 port switch over to the home theater area and plugging in the apple tv to stop using wireless) it took 5 minutes.
Yes there are cheaper switches out there, but since this switch is in a semi-visible area I wanted something that looked a little nicer. Having it come from Cisco is just an added bonus.If you're looking for an 8 port switch, I would recommend the SE2800.

Only a few months after owning it, the already LOUD internal fan started sounding like a jet engine. I contacted Linksys support and was sent a replacement through the RMA process. The unit I received worked for about a month or so now without a problem until now. It has started sounding like the other one. What piece of junk fans did they put in these things? I am getting rid of this and going with another brand. Now I am out $254, and I have to go spend money on a router.

NETGEAR ProSafe WNDAP330 - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g/n (draft) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been running Netgear ProSafe networking equipment for many years for my small office at home. Due to its typically high reliability, performance and value I always stick with the prosafe line (geared toward business or enterprise use) over the consumer grade networking gear which is often unreliable. This is the first 802.11n unit that I found which was designed for the enterprise. So I broke down and picked it up for about $300 with shipping. The most important thing to know about this unit is that despite their advertising this unit as a dual band with both 802.11n and 802.11abg radios; the radios cannot both be used at the same time. You can only turn on one or the other. This is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. For those of us replacing old 802.11g equipment my preference would be for this unit to be able to support 802.11g legacy clients with one of the radios and also be able to support 802.11n 5ghz clients with the other 5ghz radio.
The range of the unit in 5ghz 40 mhz mode is quite short. Definately less than the WG102 802.11g unit that it was replacing. Since the range is so short I will have to get an additional unit and put it upstairs. Also, the firmware is a bit buggy and reliability doesn't seem as good as the mature wg102 unit. I'm certain that reliability will improve over time and perhaps speed too; but righ now I'd recommend sticking with 802.11g unless you absolutely have to upgrade to 802.11n.********************************
update
After countless hours of troubleshooting, I've finally narrowed down the problem. The unit is just not reliable with WMM turned on regardless of 20/40 mhz. With WMM turned off the unit is super reliable but only runs at 54mbps.
Stay away from this unit until more firmware updates are available resolving the WMM problem with Intel 5300 and Intel 4965 laptop nic cards. Don't know if this applies to other vendor nic cards.

(More customer reviews)We bought 3 of these to use on the amenities floor of a hirise condo building in Chicago. We bought a PoE Switch and then had a Cat5 run to these locations. The access points provide plenty of coverage. While the other reviewer is correct that its not a gigabit port, so speeds are limited to 100mbps, its more than sufficient right now, and for the price, its not worth spending more on gigabit at this point. If we need to upgrade in the future, prices will drop by then for those.
Easy to set up and install. Again, these are getting heavy use by many users each day -- probably 100 users per day -- and we have run into no issues 4 months after installation.
WARNING: The AP's do not use 3 watts as stated on the specs. They clearly use about 14 watts each when using with a PoE switch.

I recommend it to all my friends who are looking for something more than the basic routers like the ones from Dlink, Netgear, Linksys, etc. I have used this router in multiple residential and commercial applications. It has never failed. It is also a great help for someone wanting to learn the Cisco IOS.
Only negative, you will need to update the IOS to the most current version to get the most out of it. But you should update the drivers on any computer equipment that you buy.

(More customer reviews)Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

(More customer reviews)I needed a wireless bridge so that I could move my printer to a room with no jacks. The D-Link DAP-1522 had great reviews, and a bridge should work with any environment. Not this one.
* The router's wireless settings can not be configured without Internet Explorer (a Linux user like me has to fire up a VM).
* The bridge would not relay DHCP responses from the wireless network to the attached wired devices. D-Link support says that is because I am using a Linux router (though it shouldn't make a difference). If I configured static IP addresses on my wired devices, they worked great.
* D-Link has not released new firmware in over a year, so I doubt that these problems will get fixed.
* D-Link support was "lacking" (and don't get me started on Office Depot's awful return policy).
* Custom firmwares like dd-wrt or tomato won't work on this device, so there is no easy way to correct these problems.
In short, I can get it to do what I want, but it's a lot of hassle.

Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.

Actiontec Verizon GT704WGB Wireless DSL Gateway Review

(More customer reviews)Got this for my dad when I finally convinced him to get DSL. It's awful. It's marketed as a "Verizon" wireless modem & router, but it's made by Actiontec. The first one my dad got just up and died after only a few months. You couldn't even connect to it to pull up the diagnostic menu. He returned it to Best Buy and got a replacement. This one needs to be reset at least once a day if not more often. I would never recommend this box to anyone ever in the future.
