I have an old portable router that has served me well for about 6 years. I travel a great deal and when I go to hotels that only have wired internet it's easy to plug the router into the cable, pay for the internet from my laptop, and then enjoy wifi from the laptop, iPhone, touch, etc - all my devices.
Increasingly I find that locations will use wireless internet and my old portable router can't connect to a wireless isp - so I'd have to pay (or be otherwise limited) in my ability to share a wireless connection when I travel. So I have been looking for a portable router that allows me to connect all my devices wirelessly through the one portal (router). I've tried a few (and sent them back because of difficulty of getting them to work or the frustrating interface that they chose). I have settled on the Zonenet because it appears to actually do what I want it to do. This is identical, by the way, to the little Tenda portable router - the only differences are that this one is blue (to the Tenda's beige) and the instruction manual for this one is SOOOO much better than the Tenda (if you buy the Tenda, download the manual from Zonenet if you want to figure out how to get it to work).
I get mixed results in using the Wireless ISP mode - at home, I cannot get it to work at all, but that may be due to some wifi settings I have on my home router. However, I am able to get it to work on an open system like Panera - following the instructions to tell the router to connect (and follow them carefully, you need to make sure that the channel that you are receiving and sending are identical, and that the security settings are identical in every way) I am able to connect wirelessly to this router and surf on Panera's network - which is just what I want to do.
Pro:
- Cheap
- Can power it through a simple USB cable (which also powers other devices like GPS, etc, so there are fewer cables to carry)
Cons:
- Manual is okay, not great. You have to read it a few times to figure out exactly what you need to do.
