This item is advertised to work on Windows/Mac/Linux. I'm a linux user, and this device is a pain in the butt. You plug it in and nothing works out of the box. lsusb doesn't show you what chipset is working inside: I had physically open the device to find out. It's a realtek RTL8188CUS. There is no support for this chipset in the mainline kernel (yet?). However, you can download the sourcecode for the kernel module from realtek.com. Doing so gives you a zip file that claims to support the 8188CUS, but compilations yield only a kernel module for the 8192CU chipset. Loading this module enables the detection of the device, but once you try to connect to a network, the whole system crashes. EPIC FAIL.
If I wanted this kind of user experience, I'd switch back to windows. For now, this isn't even worth the return postage as it was so cheap.
