Linksys Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router Review

(More customer reviews)This futuristic-looking router delivers N-speed connectivity in a sleek, antenna-encasing box with four Ethernet ports. If you have a simple network, you'll probably have no problem, but steel yourself with plenty of patience if you plan to connect less common devices such as a network bridge.
The CD provided, with its LELA wizard, makes installation and connecting to the internet a breeze, as long as you know which kind of security (WPA, 64-bit or 128-bit WEP) you want. All our computers -- Macs and PCs --connected. Likewise, our iPhones and Wii picked up the wireless network without incident. However, I bought this router to improve video streaming and VoIP which required a connection with a network bridge. The WPA security wouldn't work to get my Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter online, so we switched to WEP. This process took a lot of patience because the router had trouble identifying the adapter -- and it's made by the same company. Still, the problem may lie with the bridge, not the router.
The four extra Ethernet ports are great for those who have Ooma, gaming consoles, and other hard-wired devices in the same room as the router, and if this is your arrangement , you'll find the set-up and operation, as well as the speed, excellent. Because the range extends so far, it is imperative that users properly configure the security settings. It is completely backward compatible with wireless G and B, although obviously you won't get the N-speed on those devices. The lag time for computers to pick up the wireless network is significantly longer than it was with our Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, but the internet connection is more steady.
I recommend this router for those who have N-speed internet devices or who need faster, more reliable connections.

MSI RG54A Wireless-G Broadband Router with 4 x 10/100 LAN Ports Review

(More customer reviews)I work for an ISP, and deal with a lot of routers and DSL modems. This is one of the worst I have used.
First, the UI works strangely. Every change makes the router reboot, however once it has rebooted, and the interface says that the changes have been applied, but are not. It seems to take about 2 minutes after the reboot before they ACTUALLY work. There are no visual cues to know when they have kicked in.
I configured this router for a customer with PPPoE, saved the configuration, power cycled the router and it worked. I went to install it at their home later that day, and all of the settings were still in the router, but the wan had changed it's self back to statically configured. Strange. I set it back to PPPoE, about 5 minutes later, it came up and worked. About a week later it changed it's self back to static again.
Why argue with it, since I work for the ISP, I was able to give it a static ip address until I can get a different router out there.
Too bad, I really like other MSI products.

Notes: A Hard 30/30/30 is when you hold the reset button for 30secs with power plug in,then 30 secs without power plug, then a final 30 secs with power plug in. During the entire process the reset button SHOULD BE HELD.
Step 1: Download-> http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT160N/3.0/dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin/2294
Step 2: Plug in the power for your router
Step 3: Plug your computer to your router, the Ethernet wire goes into any blue port, NOT THE YELLOW ONE.
Step 4: Do a hard 30/30/30 reset. See Note on how to do so.
Step 5: On your browser go to http://192.168.1.1
Step 5: It should say management mode, browse your computer for the firmware file, then upload. DONT TOUCH ANYTHING AFTER THIS, YOU COULD BRICK YOUR ROUTER.
Step 6: After the browser says upload complete, check your routers light and make sure the WAN,Wireless and power lights are steady.
Step 7: Then go to http://192.168.1.1 on browser, if it doesnt connect, then take the power off your router and wait 10 secs and replug and go to http://192.168.1.1.
Step 8: Once inside the browser, do a hard 30/30/30 reset after naming and putting a password on router and logging in.
Thats it your router is ready. You should upgrade to the newest firmware build 2010-08-09 mini one.
To upgrade download http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT160N/3.0/dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin/3758
Do a hard 30/30/30 reset then log into router, you'll have to rename and make a password again. Then go to advanced tab and click firmware upgrade, choose firmware..then follow the browser instructions. After installs done, do another hard 30/30/30 reset and you're good to go.

I connected the Mac to the cable router via Ethernet and then used the Internet sharing option in OSX to beam a wireless signal for all my devices. This was fine for me, but sadly my old Mac died last week. (*cries)
I bought this router to get my wireless network going again. I was attracted to the Valet router, of course, but I didn't think I really needed it (and currently it costs $89). Well, I bought the WRT120N as a cost effective alternative. It took me about 10 minutes at the most to set it up. You just put the disc in the drive and follow all of the directions. My Linux laptops detected and picked network up immediately. My daughter's Nintendo DSi was just as easy to connect. When I am on my desk top I can see exactly who is connected to my network at any time, and I can share the printer with all the computers, as well. The connection is great- I get a lot more speed on my wireless signal than I did using the old Mac method. This is the lower end of the Cisco wireless N router lineup, and it is fantastic, so I can only imagine how amazing the Valet would be.
I would recommend this for anyone who wants to set up a home network with a fairly simple setup, like laptops, game consoles, e-readers, etc. I cannot say how it would work with a complicated home entertainment setup. In fact, I don't think it is meant to handle more than basic home networks. Dont be put off by price or other reviewers who cant set up a network and blame the equipment. This is a great router, and if you can follow instructions you can get your network up and running in just a few minutes.

(More customer reviews)I've had several routers over the years, and this one is the best so far. Range is great, speed is great, but best of all is the setup. Has a CD that makes it very easy, and when you are done it gives you a diagram of your entire network, including the names of each computer. I've set up several routers over the years, so I know what I'm doing, but who wants to spend time messing with it? I believe just about anyone could do this one. I've had it about a month, and I love it.
Update: I found out that my download speed was cut by 85% to my HARDWIRED computer when the ethernet cable was routed through the router (which it has to be) and then to my desktop computer. I found this out accidentally when checking speeds, and then got on the Linksys website and ask for help. I got a response and they had me change some obscure (MTU) settings (which I still don't understand), and it fixed the problem. My issue is, NOWHERE in the instructions does it even hint that you might need to do this.
Otherwise, the router works fine. But if you get it, check the download/upload speeds before and after the installation.

(More customer reviews)I noticed a lot of so so reviews and was wary until I read a professional review praising it's easy set up. I decided to go for it and boy am I glad I did. I happen to be a novice setting up PC related stuff but this router was cake to set up. Be forwarned; however, my intention was to simply set up wireless with encryption and nothing else. I had no desire to set up a full blown network with file and printer sharing. I simply wanted encrypted wireless for my xp windows pc and vista windows laptop in the house. I figure I can print stuff by using the pc with the printer or using a flash drive so I had no desire in oversteaping my technical boundries.
That being said... it was as simple as putting the disk in, following directions printing the encryption code and connecting the router. Easy as cake! I had more trouble configuring the recieving vista windows laptop and xp windows pc! Which wasn't that hard either. The router is connected to my windows vista desktop and my windows vista laptop and seperate xp windows desktop are recieving the signal. It was as easy as plugging in the code to the recieving laptop and pc.
The signal is always strong and no breaks in three weeks of constant use. Despite other comments, the signal strength is awesome even with the unit under a shelf. Unless you live in a 25 room mansion or set up the network wrong... you should have no problems. I have absolutely no complaints. The cherry on top is how awesome this router looks and with no antenna! You could easly hide this under a shelf but why would you want to! It's beautiful and you could use it as decoration! I admit, it is pricey but well worth the money in the headaches you will save setting it up and the aesthetic factor. Highly recommended especially for novices who simply want wireless in their house.

Cisco-Linksys WRT160N-RM Refurbished Wireless-N Router Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a Wireless-N router (the newest form of wireless connectivity) as most of my computers and consoles (Xbox 360 has a new wireless dongle) now have Wireless N technology. This was cheap and had fairly decent reviews so I decided to take a chance. The item arrived fairly quick and in great (I'd say practically brand new) condition and was easy to install. However, after only a few hours of use, I noticed several problems with this unit. Most of the problems seemed to be with my Macbook Pro; it wasn't getting a full signal, speeds were slow, and whenever I opened iChat, the router would instantly restart itself. After going through the hassle of purchasing and installing it, I decided to try something else before sending it back: I installed DD-WRT open source firmware on the router, and haven't looked back since.
I have never used open source firmware before, but I had read up about it before purchasing a router again. Even though the DD-WRT website listed this as not compatible, I purchased this anyway in hopes that eventually it would be released. DD-WRT for this router (version 3) wasn't supported until literally 2 weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to find a release of it on the DD-WRT support forums (easily found by doing a quick search on Google for "DD-WRT WRT160Nv3"). After downloading the mini pack and the standard pack (listed as WRT160Nv3 in the file name) I loaded the router access page (192.168.1.1) and did a web firmware update thru my FireFox browser, first starting with the mini pack, and once that is finished, then with the standard firmware for this router.
It was as easy as that, and took literally 4 minutes to upgrade it. Now, this router has been perfect. It hasn't been restarted once since it was updated with DD-WRT, the speed is fantastic, and overall, I am extremely happy to have upgraded with the new firmware. The DD-WRT firmware also has some great features like bandwidth monitoring, signal adjustment and strength meter, great security features and tons more that the standard Linksys firmware doesn't include. **Please note: there is a slight chance DD-WRT could brick (aka destroy) your router, though it doesn't appear to happen very often. Please make sure you read the DD-WRT website and support thread on this router thoroughly before upgrading it. With that said, it was the easiest and least painful upgrade I have ever done, and now this router works great.

EDIT: 12/13/10 Please be advised that this review is over a year old. Since installing DD-WRT last year, I have never had to upgrade anything or really even mess with it. However, things change quickly, and my experience then might be different from yours today.
