Seagate FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter STDSA10G-RK (White) Review

Seagate FreeAgent DockStar Network Adapter STDSA10G-RK (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You can use this as a home network server for windows without signing up with pogoplug or installing any software.
Plug your USB drive into your computer, format it (preferably with NTFS) and create a file on it named .ceid
Using notepad, or your favorite text editor, put these lines in the file (replacing yoursharename with a name of your own choosing). Note the mode=rw allows reading and writing.
servicename=yoursharename
xcode.metadata=never
xcode.thumbnail=never
xcode.stream=never
cifs.mode=rw
Plug the usb drive into the Dockstar, and you're all set. The drive will be available as
\\fadsMMMMMM\yoursharename (where MMMMMM are the last 6 letters and numbers of the Dockstar's mac address, which is on the label on the bottom).
Note you can plug up to 3 regular usb drives and one Seagate Go drive into this. You do not need a go drive.
For maximum security, I recommend using your internet router's firewall to block all internet access from whatever ip address gets assigned to the dockstar.

NETGEAR Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit XETB10GM Review

NETGEAR Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit XETB10GM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are like me, you have some form of high-speed internet coming into your house. You probably have Cable or DSL or something else, and then a "main" router where there the Internet comes from "out there" to "in here". You probably then have it served up with a wireless router. Me? I have Comcast cable piped into a NETGEAR WNR2000 Wireless-N Router. From there, I send the wires out to three computers in the room for my wife and kids. I then use the wireless with my notebook around Works pretty well.
But I have an office upstairs, and I wanted to put a server up there as well as a notebook on a desk for my use. That's two computers. Now the notebook has a wireless care built in, but the server doesn't, and I loathed the idea of putting a wireless card in a desktop. I could run a wire up through the house, but what a pain in the butt. So I needed to figure out how to get my wireless signal up to a router in my office.
I went to Best Buy and I got a Linksys Bridge. It was a bit tricky to set up, but I did, and it worked pretty well. It was somewhat intermittent, but I was able to have switch up in my office with connectivity to any number of machines.
But then, out of nowhere, the thing stopped working. It just bricked itself. No lights, no power, no nothing. Great. So, off to Best Buy again, with a determination not buy that Linksys Bridge again. So the nice sales gal there pointed me to a NetGear Gaming router that is basically a wireless bridge. I guess that these things are very popular for gaming consoles so they market them mostly to gamers. So I'm slowly walking out, and this other guy comes up to me and says "That will work for what you want, but I can show you something that is faster and more reliable".
Well, I don't know about you, but I am into faster and more reliable, so I followed him, and he showed me this kit.
I was a bit hesitant at first, as it seemed a bit strange to pump my connection through my household power lines and the box explicitly calls it an "XBox 360" kit (that gaming thing again), but the guy said it works perfectly for a regular network and that he'd personally take my return if it didn't work exactly like I wanted.
Well, as far as I can tell, he'll never see me again. This thing worked like a charm. It was pathetically easy to install - network cable out of my router, into device, which I plugged into the wall. Then, up in the office, I plug in the other one, with a network cable out of it into my switch. Simple, clean, and easy. It worked immediately, and the total setup time (hardware only, no software to configure) was literally five minutes.
So far, it's working great. I now want to find out if I can buy one of these things and use it in yet another room. That would be even cooler, as we have a renter who'd really appreciate that.
All in all, a purchase that I'm really happy with.

Belkin F5D4071 Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit (White) Review

Belkin F5D4071 Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit (White)
Average Reviews:

The only thing with this device is that you need to plug it directly into a wall socket, not a multi-outlet device. With that caveat, the device works great. I was having problems with my wireless N signal cutting out on me and it was driving me nuts. I looked at all of these devices available on Amazon and decided to go with one of the least expensive to see if it would work. Not only is it working, the status indicator shows a throughput speed of 100 Mbps. I don't have any way to check that, but it certainly seems to be better than my average wireless N connection (I would occasionally see throughput numbers over 110 Mbps with the N connection but not consistantly). It has also increased my download speed at least 4x what I was getting with the unreliable wireless connection. I am a happy laptop user now.

The Belkin F5D4071 Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit allows you to easily create a network or extend a network connection in your home using existing electrical outlets. You no longer have to worry about tripping over your long Ethernet cables, or suffer through problems with wireless reception or interference. Just plug a Powerline Networking Adapter into an outlet, and you have a new network connection.
Quick and Easy Setup By taking advantage of the existing electrical wiring in your house, you don't have to perform any complicated wiring to create a robust Ethernet-based home network. The Powerline Networking Adapter turns your existing electrical wiring into a home network. Simply plug one Adapter into a wall outlet and connect it to your router with the included Ethernet cable. Then, wherever you need a network port, just plug another Adapter into an available wall outlet, and--presto!--you've created a new network connection. In your living room, for instance, you can easily connect your broadband TV, and your Xbox or other gaming console; in your home office, you can connect your computers. If you need a connection in your attic--no problem!
This kit includes two Adapters, letting you create one network port wherever you have an outlet. The kit affords you a couple of placement options: you can either plug the Adapters directly into the wall with the wall-plug Adapter, or you can place the adapter farther away from the wall with the power cable.
Fast, Secure, and Stable Network Connection The Belkin Powerline Networking Adapter runs at speeds of up to 85 Mbps, letting you quickly download information, stream music and movies, and make Internet phone calls. (Actual speed and distance will vary depending on interference, network traffic, building materials, and other conditions.) The Powerline Networking Adapter is HomePlug 1.0 certified, can coexist with HomePlug AV, and is compliant with the 802.3/802.3u standards.
Unlike a wireless network, which can often come and go depending on interference from appliances and other household items, the Powerline Networking Adapter creates a stable connection that is not affected by external factors. It also features a 56-bit DES link encryption with key management for secure communication, keeping your personal information safe from intruding eyes.
The included installation software requires Windows 2000, XP or Vista 32-bit. The Belkin Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit is backed by a lifetime warranty.
What's in the Box Two Powerline Networking Adapters, two Ethernet cables, two power cords, two wall plug adapters, quick installation guide, and CD with installation software and user manual.

NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card Review

NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To keep my small business network running, I've always tried to reduce costs where possible. Unfortunately, when it comes to network cards, using the lowest possible priced Ethernet card can be false economy.
The Netgear FA311 is one of the only cards I've come across where oddball compatibility issues don't arise. With others, there's always an issue or two, however minor they may be. A D-Link card that prevents a home automation package from working. A Linksys card that conflicts with an online streaming video technology. I could go on. The Netgear costs just a few dollars more than these others, but is still well under the price of brands such as 3Com in most cases.
For me, on all the machines I've tried, the FA311 installs quickly and easily, and works marvelously.
I have only one caution: Windows 2000 users should download and have ready the latest drivers from the Netgear web site. Across two FA311 purchases, the drivers delivered on the packaged floppy had various problems (e.g., major packet loss). I'm used to doing that as a matter of course for the majority of driver-dependent computer goodies, so I didn't find it to be a hassle in this case.

Netgear's FA311 Ethernet network card connects your PC to other networked computers, printers, Zip drives, routers, network storage, and the Internet. Providing high-speed data transfer, the FA311 provides 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing capability, eliminating the need for manual switching. Compatible with all major PC operating systems, the FA311 ensures your readiness for the future, providing both 5-volt and 3.3-volt PCI capability. Three LEDs on the front panel for 100 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and activity offer intuitive feedback on network status and performance.
Getting started is simple: open your PC, plug in the card, start your PC, and install the driver from the floppy diskette. The FA311 Ethernet network card comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Monster PowerNet 300 Power Line Network Module with Clean Power Review

Monster PowerNet 300 Power Line Network Module with Clean Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved my network-able Blue-ray player I purchased, but I hated the wireless adapter which left me always praying my Netflix or U-tube content would actually play. Same with my networkable TV, I'd always lose the radio or the news. My PS3 online gaming was a joke wirelessly. I dreaded running a network cable from my livingroom into my bedroom. Such a downer for such great products.
However, I found this little device and AMAZINGLY everything works flawlessly! It's literally plug and play. High-speed networking that's virtually wireless!!! You need one on your router end to plug "wire" a Cat5/ethernet cable into and one for wherever you want to have a "wired" connection for your equipment. You use a Cat5/ethernet cable to "wire" your components into the Monster PowerNet which is plugged into the wall. No cables between rooms, only between your router to PowerNet which plugs into the outlet and one from your components to the PowerNet 200 or 300.
You may have to reset your components from wireless to wired, but after that, it just works! NO more jagged netflix, waiting for info to load, missed songs or slow online gaming. It actually downloads the best quality off netflix. I'm really happy with this. I'm used to wiring and setting up computers, home theatre, and complicated set-ups. I was really amazed at how easy it was.
Good luck and buy it! It really is worth it if you use networkable products, or even if you have a wireless deadspot in your home. I'm glad I found this because it's much cheaper than running network cables through my home which was going to run me ($3,000-$4,500).
BTW the difference between the PowerNet 300 and PowerNet 200 is the PowerNet 300 allows for more than one component (4 ethernet ports) in a room. The PowerNet 200 has only one ethernet connection. The PowerNet 200 & 300 also gives you some surge protection & line conditioning (clean power filtering) which erases some of the "buzz/noise" or interference in your walls to give a faster connection.

Fewer wires, better reliability -- that's what you get from Monster's PowerNet 300. Monster PowerNet 200 Powerline Network Adapter Starter Kit Review

Monster PowerNet 200 Powerline Network Adapter Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With my new Samsung Blueray, not only can I pop in a Blueray disk but my model has Netflix, Pandora, You Tube, and Blockbuster download and play capability via wireless connection. Problem was my router is upstairs on one end of the house and the Blueray is downstairs on the other end of the house, some 60+ feet distance; and not even a linksys WRT610N would send enough signal to get better than a 10% success rate on the download. Most of the time, it just chugged and chugged and then timed out. Solution: Monster Powernet 200 which sends the signal through your electrical wiring. It takes 2 units of equipment to get started - thus it's called a starter kit. You just plug one into a wall outlet at your PC and connect an ethernet cable from the Powernet to the router. Plug the other Powernet unit into a wall outlet at your Blueray and connect an ethernet cable from it to your Blueray player. Then go into setting on your Blueray and change the connection type from wireless to cable. Now the movies download in about 10 seconds. Another plus is now that the first 2 units are installed, I can add additional units in another room of the house where I have an ethernet ready TV. My only word of caution is that the Powernet unit plugs into both sockets of a typical wall outlet, then compensates by having an outlet on both sides of the unit; but not all plugs may fit into it because of angled plug shapes.

Linksys is a leader in networking for good reason. I first got this card because of my new cable internet connection. Even if you are a novice computer user with no experience in computer hardware you can install this card youself! The directions are very good with step by step instructions that are easy to read for anyone. Once you have it installed the driver instructions are also easy to read and offer them for Any operating system you can think of. If you are running windows xp (or thinking of upgrading) you don't even need to install the drivers yourself because they are built into windowsxp and it will install itself making instulation that much easier! They also have a nice webpage that further explains troubleshooting if you get into a problem for some reason! Don't go pay some store 50-100 bucks to install a network card you can do it yourself in 20 mintues for nothing and Linksys makes it possible at a very good price!
Also, after having the card installed for over a year it has never gave me any problems whatsoever! I wish i could say that about some other hardware that i have purchased!

NETGEAR Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2501 Review

NETGEAR Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2501
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I saw this item, I leapt at the opportunity to get my hands on a set of these, in hopes that this Netgear Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter Kit would give me a stronger Internet connection than I was getting wirelessly to my Wii. I've only just recently begun subscribing to Netflix, and the signal that I've been getting wirelessly has left something to be desired with regards to image quality of downloaded media from the Instant queue.
When I received my package, I couldn't wait to get these in place and put them to use. Luckily for me, setting these up was a breeze. The adapters themselves are pretty tall, and fairly wide, as you probably determined by the photo - about 2.5" wide, 5" tall, and about 1.75" deep. They fit VERY snugly into the outlets (I placed each of mine in the bottom outlet, so I could still access the top outlet), so be prepared to apply a little force to the adapters if you're trying to get them into outlets that are in an awkward spot to get to.
The instructions also clearly state that these adapters need to be placed in the wall outlets themselves, NOT into a power strip that items are then connected to. Looking at them, it's pretty obvious to me that the recommendations are wisely made. I simply wouldn't want to fry these adapters out if I put them into an outlet that didn't look adequate for them. So, I unplugged the power strip that I'd had plugged into each outlet that the adapters were going to be occupying, connected one of the enclosed Ethernet cables to each adapter, popped the adapters into the outlets, looked for the LED indicators that showed that these were working well where I'd put them, plugged the power strips into each adapter's built-in outlet (ingenious!), and I was in business! It was then as simple as connecting the Ethernet cable from the adapter near my computer to a port on my wireless router, and then connecting the Ethernet cable from the adapter near my entertainment center to my Wii and its LAN USB adapter, to create the network connection.
When I first got my Wii and was considering my Wii-Internet connectivity options, I'd thought about buying a ridiculously long Ethernet cable to wind around my apartment and its walls, and the challenge it would be to staple/nail around the cord to keep it in place. I could've done that, but I knew how unsightly it would be, so I opted to go for the wireless router that I now have (and still use and enjoy), and connected my Wii to the 'net that way. It was more than adequate, too, until I started my Netflix subscription, and could literally see that my wireless signal was lacking, for Netflix-viewing purposes. Thanks to this adapter kit and a Wii-compatible LAN adapter, though, I've now got the best picture that I've seen on the Netflix Instant queue accessed through my Wii, and a super-strong connection to the Internet with it. Long story short, I couldn't be more pleased by just how well these adapters do what they say they will. I remember originally thinking, "there's no way that these things can make an Internet connection without them being directly connected to each other with a cable." Netgear, you've proven me wrong, and I'm thrilled that you did! Two thumbs up!
* UPDATE*
It's knocking on a year after my install of these NETGEAR Powerline AV+200 adapters, and I'm still happily using them. Perhaps even better, I'm still LOVING them! They continue to provide a strong and consistent signal to my Wii, which I still use daily to watch TV/movies on via Netflix.
If you happen to be having any viewing quality issues, be sure that you've got fast enough Internet service. The NETGEAR adapters will transmit everything they possibly can, as reliably as they can, but if your Internet is just not fast enough, your viewing quality might be a bit on the grainy/pixellated side. I had been using such low-grade Internet when I initially installed these that it wasn't even listed in my cable provider's options - I had to specifically request it in a sales call with them - but I've since bumped my service up to one of the top two options, and that totally fixed the issues that I had with viewing quality.
These NETGEAR adapters were great last May when I first got them, and, eight months later, they're still keeping my entertainment center up-to-date with the latest technology, and doing so beautifully! Good stuff!

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14 Review

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your wireless doesn't reach the rest of your house (like mine...) powerline is a great solution and these PhonEx units really are pretty much instant plug and play. I was amazed and relieved it was as simple to use as the ads on their site touted and you really can be up and running in less than 2 minutes like they say. (Unless your house is really large and it takes you longer than that to get to the room where you're putting the other extension...) In over 7 months use I have never had a failure with the boxes, speed has been pretty good with a DSL connection, and the best thing is it absolutely completely PC and Mac compatible. I use it in a home office situation where I have PC's, half the people I work with have Macs. You don't need to load anything -- you just plug in, boot up, and you're on. Which is great becuase most of the people I work with just want to turn it on and have it work. They don't wanna load a CD, configure their system, etc etc. My only complaint about the units are they're ugly. Maybe it doesn't matter because they just sit on the floor but still, in this day and age of tech design, they could at least make 'em look a little nice! But kudos to them for making it work so well at least. These are a great, simple, reliable solution to extending your network range. Plug it in (note that you need a minimum of TWO units; one on your router, and one on the other end where ever you are plugging in.) Turn on your computer. Everything works. It's that simple.

NETGEAR Powerline AV Adapter with Ethernet Switch Review

NETGEAR Powerline AV Adapter with Ethernet Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up one of these along with the V101 in a combo package to run my Xbox 360 and DirecTV DVR downstairs from the cable modem and router in my upstairs office. I had been using wireless networking for the past several years but had issues with wireless failing from time to time and went through 3 routers over 3 years accordingly. Since the wired portion of the routers worked just fine at retirement in each case, I thought I'd give an alternative a try. I researched a few different brands and finally settled on Netgear's Powerline offering. I specifically went with the ones rated for 200Mb for HD streaming options.
I am very satisfied with the performance so far. The Windows Media Center functionality with my Xbox 360 is finally performing in a manner that I expected. With wireless I was getting VERY slow response in the Media Center menu but it operates much more smoothly with the Powerline adapter connected.
I ordered an additional adapter for a computer and DirecTV DVR in another room of my home and all 3 devices are operating well together with excellent connection speed. In addition, setup was completely simple. It was literally plug and play. No configuration required whatsoever.
I would definitely suggest this product line without reservation.

Original Review (December 7, 2010):
I decided to give this NIC a try, since there several reviews indicating it works right out of the box on Windows 7. I received the package today and installed it in my computer. Sure enough, after my Windows 7 came up, it recognized the NIC (Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)). However, there's no connection because Windows 7 thinks the ethernet (media) cable is "unplugged". I made sure both ends of the cable are securely connected to the NIC and router port. On the NIC, I can see the LED is lit on the "DATA", but the 1000 LED is not lit. Ran the ipconfig /renew in an attempt to reconnect the NIC and even rebooted the computer again, but the same problem persisted. I googled for updated driver (even from Netgear.com) but none is available. I decided to run the driver setup from the accompanied resource CD. The driver installation complained that Windows 7 is not supported and terminates.
I've used many product from Netgear in the past and have very good experiences until this one. Windows 7 has been out for a while now, but netgear has yet to update this driver to work with Windows 7. I'm contacting J&R to returning this product.
=================
This is an update of my review above (Feb 21, 2011).
I did contact J&R to return this product, which J&R authorized the return. However, I never got around to returning this item because I had to go on business trip and vacation one after the other. I forgot afterward until having to deal with VPN connection brought me back. I decided to give it second try. I plugged it back into the PCI slot 1 and powered up the computer. After the login to the Win 7 64-bit OS, Windows immediately detected new hardware and started to install the driver all on it's own. I remembered reading about Windows installing it's own driver for this and worked for someone, so I just let it finished. There was a small message indicating the install was complete and device ready for use. I immediately brought up a DOS box and typed in ipconfig /all and the devices was listed with IP address. I pinged www.yahoo.com and they were successful. I was blown away at what just happened. Now it's working great, and it is detected as being Gbit interface as well. I have VirtualBox with Ubuntu running on Windows 7, so I reconfigured the network to use this new nic as bridged network. Tried my VPN connections and that worked as well. So now I'm a happy camper. This is what should have happened the first time around. I would have given this product a 5 stars, but because of the original troublesome installation, I'm now giving it 4 stars.

OBi110 Voice Service Bridge and VoIP Telephone Adapter Review

OBi110 Voice Service Bridge and VoIP Telephone Adapter

I have been looking for a simple solution that would allow us to setup and use Google Voice. Since asterisk 1.8 came out, I have been waiting for DD-WRT or tomatoes to integrate this in the router so I would not need a computer to run 24/7 to set up Google Voice.
Then comes Obi110 which solves this problem. The setup was very simple. If you don't want to store your GV credentials on the Obitalk.com you can set it up by logging on the adapter (just like logging onto the router). I did find it that if you do it this way, when you dial out you still have to dial "**1" (using profile1) then the number you want to reach. Maybe there is a way to get rid of this. But if you setup through Obitalk you can enable the prefix and dial just like in GV. You can also update the FW from Obitalk.
Everything is working as expected. Caller ID shows up correctly when you call someone. When someone calls the ID would show "?" then the number with no dash, something like this: ?1234567890. My wife was on the phone for an hour and she said the quality was good. If you are looking into a simple setup (and almost plug and play) I would highly recommend the Obi110.

D-Link DFE-530TX+ 10/100 Fast Ethernet Desktop Adapter Review

D-Link DFE-530TX+ 10/100 Fast Ethernet Desktop Adapter
Average Reviews:

My first impression is "this is such a cheapo lookin' card, but for the price, I guess I can give it a try"... Boy, was I wrong or what? The installation is so easy, it took 2 minutes and 40 seconds, including opening and closing the computer cover, and software driver. The card's performance is second to none, far exceeds my Linksys and Netgear, even Intel cards. Ever since, I've buying this particular card for my home and professional networking use, and it never failed me.
I know some people gets uncomfortable when they see a "ancient floppy disk" for storing driver. But darn it, it works great. And what's amazing about D-Link, is that they always seem to include the latest driver in their packaging. I have bought over 60 of these cards, and the driver date is just barely 2 - 3 months old on every purchase. Consider Linksys, their drivers are at least 1 year old. To top it off, Windows 2000 and ME has build-in drivers for this card, and the floppy isn't even needed.
Overall, this is a good performing card at a wonderful price. They use the SAME chipset (stamped with their own name) that other competitors use as well, but they did it much less expensive... Definitely +++!

Besides being available at an excellent price, the Netgear GA311 Gigabit Ethernet card is supported natively by Mac OS X 10.4 and later and by Mac OS X Server 10.4 and later.
Even though the product mentions no support for either OS, the card will work without the need for any third party driver.
