ZyXEL PLA-401 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Wall-plug Adapter Review

ZyXEL PLA-401 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Wall-plug Adapter
Average Reviews:

The ZyXEL is working great. I purchased it to get the highest bitstream I could get to match my G network. The trick to get it to work flawlessly is to first get the one working that you are plugging into your router. Then plug in the 2nd one in the same room. You have to get all three lights working(plug in your computer or printer, etc.,to get the third light to turn on). Once you have that working within the same room with your router I could move to the location I really wanted to use it at the other end of the house. As I watch my downloads to the newly wired computer I see no loss in BPS the download speed is the same as for my wireless and wired equipment on my G network. I have no idea how it would work for High Definition. When I need to expand my network (without Wireless capability I'll just buy the singleton)..

Philips NP2500/37 WiFi Internet Radio Network Music Player with Rhapsody (Black) Review

Philips NP2500/37 WiFi Internet Radio Network Music Player with Rhapsody (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The entire problem with this player is that it does one thing really well, but has a couple of other features thrown in addition that don't work as advertised.
As a player for Rhapsody, this really rocks. The songs come up quickly, the interface is easy to navigate, and all the songs feature artwork that looks great on the small but crisp LCD. The only downside is that it requires a paid Rhapsody account, although the free month is a nice introduction.
When it comes to internet radio and streaming music as an UPnP device, this player really falls apart. The internet radio functions work well, but the connectivity is very slow compared to the Rhapsody service, and it is unable to display song information from every station. Some stations work, some don't. Also, to find radio stations you are limited to either browsing the menus, or using the number pad to enter the station's name or a serach keyword. The number pad works about as well as using a cell phone without T9, so it is functional but very, very slow.
The UPnP service for streaming music from your home computer never worked for me. I installed the bundled software, updated it from the company's website, but the music never started. I was able to find my music library, even my iTunes playlists, but when I hit "Play," the player just hung forever and never started the music. FYI, I'm running a Macbook Pro with iTunes, and I keep my music on an external network hard drive, so that may have been the issue. A search through the forums of the Twonky Media Player(used for streaming) revealed nothing helpful, and I was unable to resolve it in the time I had to review the item.
As far as the player itself, the design is attractive and should fit well with most home electronics. The screen is bright and clear, and the remote works as well as can be expected. There are no on device controls, so the remote is essential to any use of the player, but I had no problems. It was also easy to connect to the internet, although entering a wireless network password using the number pad was time-consuming.
Bottom line, don't expect it to work seamlessly as a streaming media center from your PC or Mac's music collection. If you want it mainly for internet radio, it works, but is a bit hard to use. Rhapsody works great, but again, it requires a subscription.

Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio Adaptor Review

Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio Adaptor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little internet radio device is jumping-up-and-down cool! Five minutes after opening the box I was listening to a newscast from France (in French, course) then jazz from Australia, rock from Iceland and later opera and classical music from Italy. How cool is that?
The device doesn't have any speakers of it's own, but comes with and RCA jack that you connect to your receiver, TV, boom box or even a little clock radio. There's an adapter included with a smaller plug for the later. There's a little LCD screen that you operate with a small remote control that's also included. The first thing I did after I connected it to my receiver was to turn it on and go through the menu and set the date and time and hook up to my home WiFi network. It came with a manual which is very well written and understandable, but I didn't even need it. When I clicked on "Network" the name of my WiFi network popped up, I selected it in the menu, entered the password, and it connected in about 15 seconds and it was ready to go. It was super easy. And since it uses Wi-Fi to connect, you don't need a computer. This goes directly to your receiver.
The IRA is classy looking, even though it's made of plastic. I posted some photos of it. I set mine of top of the Blu-ray player in my stereo cabinet. The display screen is easy to read and the menus easy to navigate. You can search by country, genre of music, stations, or new or popular stations. There is an automatic software update feature through the Wi-Fi network or you can check yourself to see if there are any updates available. It also has volume control on the remote.
The sound is crystal clear and since I connected it to our home theater system, I could hear the bass booming out through the subwoofer and music through all the speakers. I also tried it with the adapter, plugged into a little clock radio and that worked fine too. Connected to the receiver the stations I've listened to so far were CD quality. I could imagine this at a Caribbean themed party, playing reggae music directly from that part of the world, or a romantic French dinner with music from France. No matter what your taste in music, there is something here for everyone. And if you're learning a foreign language, what better way than to listen to a newscast from that country?
I love this thing! It's a great addition to our home entertainment system.

Panasonic SH-FX50 Wireless Receiver Module Review

I recently purchased this unit to go with my SC-HT930 surround sound system. It is worth purchasing so you don't have to run speaker wire to the back of the room. I hid the receiver behind my couch and it still gave out a strong enough signal. I'm very glad I purchased it and it works great.

Thanks to the Panasonic SH-FX50 rear wireless receiver and transmitter, you can eliminate wire connections made from the main unit of your home theater system to the back of the room. Simply add this model to a compatible Panasonic home theater system and you'll be able to form a wireless connection between the main unit and the surround speakers; just set up your wireless receiver at the back of the room and connect your rear surround speakers to it.
It provides a stable, reliable wireless connection between the main system and the rear speakers via 2.4 GHz frequency. It delivers plenty of full surround sound with 70 watts per channel from the digital amplifier located in the digital receiver. Microsoft MN-720 Wireless Notebook PC Card Adapter Review

Microsoft MN-720 Wireless Notebook PC Card Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
as my review on belkin card, this card is based on broadcom chip
and I found they have a common problem, that the signal goes down under heavy load (e.g. playing 1400k wav file over network, the signal drops, just not as bad as belkin)
if you're using mixed G or pure G, you may not able to connect due to 54g setting, the default is b only, and there's a simple fix: just change the 54g setting to b-compatible
and, if you'd like to get more stable performance when the signal is low, change the rate to 6Mbps, however, you may not be able to connect pure b network
the installation is easy, as USB version, just put the CD in, and you're ready to go
my personal suggestion, get MN-710 instead due to better bitrate and less hassle

Axis 207W Wrls Network Camera Wireless 802.11G 30FPS In VGA Res Review

Axis 207W Wrls Network Camera Wireless 802.11G 30FPS In VGA Res
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this camera for a few weeks. I'm very happy with just about everything about it. I do not agree with another reviewer that it is cheaply-made, nor do I fear breaking the camera itself. A few caveats; read on.
Big advantages over other network cameras in this class:
1) Excellent image quality compared to other cameras in this class. Even though this camera uses a CMOS sensor--vs. a CCD sensor, which generally offers better video quality--the particular CMOS sensor used in this camera works very well. It has excellent low-light characteristics (supposedly down to 1 lux, which is candlelight-level, but I think that's a stretch). It has auto-brightness control. Turn down the lights and the video dims briefly then brightens right back up. Best video and fastest update is of course under decent lighting conditions, but indoor residential incandescent lighting or indoor lighting with only the light coming through the windows is just fine.
This CMOS sensor is also progressive-scan, which improves the picture quality over that coming from normal (interlaced) sensors. You can read about this on the Axis website (the URL is obvious).
2) Uses true MPEG4 compression. Most inexpensive network cameras in this class offer one type of video compression, known as Motion JPEG (or MJPEG). This offers a very good picture, but is a bandwidth hog. If you intend to stream video over the internet and you have limited bandwidth, you need something better. As an example, I have 2-3Mbps downstream on our cable modem, but only about 350kbps upstream. Upstream is what matters when you send video over the internet. This camera can stream 30 frames per second (fps) at 640x480 resolution. That's a lot of data and if it is not compressed well enough, it takes up too much bandwidth. That makes the video on the other end look jerky, with picture updates as slow as one frame per second.
This is where MPEG4 compression comes in, but you need to be careful. Again, most cameras don't offer the level of MPEG4 support that the Axis 207W offers. Some cameras say "MPEG4" but nothing more. This can be very deceptive. Here's what you need to know:
-- MPEG4, Short Header mode (SH): This is essentially no MPEG4 compression at all. It's like "faked" MPEG4.
-- MPEG4, Simple Profile (SP): This is true MPEG4 compression, but it has limited capability. Linksys has a network camera with this type of compression.
-- MPEG4, Advanced Simple Profile (ASP): This is the best MPEG4 compression offered in network cameras of this type today. The Axis 207W offers this type of compression.
Not only does the Axis 207W stream 640x480 at 30fps with MPEG4 ASP compression, it does so simultaneously with streaming Motion JPEG. So you can easily choose which one you want to see.
There are even higher levels of MPEG4 compression (past ASP) but I don't think any inexpensive network cameras offer it yet.
Other nice things:
a) The camera comes with two types of swivel mounts: one which is like a short pedestal, weighted; and one which is essentially a plastic C-clamp which allows you to mount the camera to the edge of a table or top of a chair, for example. The C-clamp does seem a bit fragile; I would not crank down too much on it.
b) The camera comes with an extra length of power cord (an extender) so if the "wall wart" power supply's cord is not long enough for your application, just add this extension between the camera and the wall wart cord (this is not a 120VAC extension cord.)
c) Ultra-configurable. Just about everything about the camera seems to be configurable from the settings.
d) Wireless works well. I've only tried WEP, but it was a breeze to set up. In fact, the whole setup was easy. You do need a little bit of networking knowledge to set up port forwarding in your router, but most of the camera defaults are right on target. The camera also offers two types of WPA.
e) Axis offers a free Domain Name Service (DNS) which allows you to pick an easy-to-remember web address. For example, you could pick "SantaClaus" and the address of your camera would be SantaClaus---axiscam---net, where the --- is actually a dot (.) [My first review got squashed by Amazon because I forgot and put in a URL.]
Here are the disadvantages I see:
1) Focusing is tedious. It's a 2-person job: one to hold the camera steady and turn the focus ring and another person to view the image on the screen and give instructions to the first person.
2) Audio is not very good. It's set at a very low level and even after turning up the slider control to the maximum, I still had to have my computer volume turned up quite high to hear any camera audio. Of course then other sounds from the computer (warning beeps etc) are very loud. This is one thing which is not configurable. Audio can be set to ON or OFF, but there is no setting for the level. Axis should fix this in their software.
3) It's a bit expensive. For the same price you can get a pan-tilt model from Panasonic or Linksys, but the image quality on those cameras is not as good, and they do not offer MPEG4 ASP compression. You have to give up something to get something, it seems.
4) There's no "privacy screen." This would be easy for Axis to add--just a simple flip-down shield to cover the lens when you don't want the video to be seen. We use a simple box I made out of a sheet of paper. Of course you could also unplug the camera, but that takes a bit longer.
I see these disadvantages to be very minor when weighed against the excellent performance of this camera as a whole.
One last point: I showed the video to a person I work with who owns the Linksys WVC200 camera, and he said he thought the Axis 207W's video was cleaner.

Grace Digital GDI-IRA500 Wireless Internet Radio Adapter Featuring Pandora, NPR and SIRIUS Review

Grace Digital GDI-IRA500 Wireless Internet Radio Adapter Featuring Pandora, NPR and SIRIUS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Grace Solo internet radio does a great job connecting the world of internet radio to my home stereo.
The Solo is good looking and connects simply out of the box. Plug in the power, connect the standard rca cable to your stereo, turn it on, choose your home network and within 5 minutes you are listening to Pandora or one of the 17,000 radio stations. While Grace has many models of standalone table top radios, I like the Solo because it connects directly to my home stereo (or even powered speakers). The solo even has a headset jack.
When you first take the Solo out of the box, you see the Solo internet radio tuner, a power cable, manual, remote and rca cable to connect to your stereo. It uses WiFi to access the internet. Make sure you have Wi-Fi in your home, and that it is strong in the area you put the solo. The Solo does have a built in Wi-Fi signal meter to see how strong your Wi-Fi is. So if you put it on the bottom shelf of your stereo system and notice a weak signal you may want to put it on a middle or top shelf. The Solo works with any 802.11b,g or n router and has a built in 802.11g receiver.
After you connect to your wireless network (you will need your wireless WEP or WPA password to do this) and set the time zone on the clock, the Solo remembers everything (including station presets) when you unplug it. That is nice because no one wants to type their wireless password in more than once.
Once you are set up you can start searching for stations by genre or location or type the call sign of the station directly into the radio. You can do this via the remote control or directly on the unit itself. I like Pandora. In order to listen to Pandora you have to register your radio at Grace's web site [...] . After you create a Grace account you enter in your Pandora user name and password on the Grace site and the radio is linked to your Pandora stations. Within a minute your Pandora stations are on the Grace radio in the `personal radio' folder. Pretty cool. You can create stations on the Grace Solo, although I prefer to do that on the Pandora web site. Grace plays SIRIUS and Live365 as well but I do not have SIRIUS or Live365 VIP accounts so I can't comment on that.

I really love the Grace unit. I get all my local radio stations #my FM reception is bad at my house but my favorite FM stations - most do these days - broadcast over the internet .. so I get those, Pandora, NPR and I even started listening to the BBC 4 which is kind of cool#.
Obviously I give this a 5 star. The only negative I would say is that on a few random stations they do not show the song metadata (they all show the station metadata). I'm not sure if that is because the station is not sending it or what. You get the station and song metadata for Pandora which is the most important for me. Oh - you can even thumbs up or down Pandora songs .. very of cool.

Terk Technologies Leapfrog LF-30S Wireless 2.4 GHz A/V Distribution System Review

Terk Technologies Leapfrog LF-30S Wireless 2.4 GHz A/V Distribution System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a wireless way to send the video & audio from my living room to a bedroom, so that I could watch movies coming from my cable box & DVD player. Having a remote control feature, I chose this model.
I can tell you that the picture was very sharp, and the sound was great. However, I also have a Panasonic KX-TG2730 expandable cordless phone system, which operates on the same 2.4Ghz frequency. With the phone's base plugged in, it produced crackling sound and wide dark bands that scrolled vertically along the picture. Unplug the phone system, and it was flawless. I had read other mixed reviews on interference caused by 2.4Ghz phone systems, but I can tell you that the Panasonic system I mentioned did cause interference for me. I tried moving the phone base, and tried all four channels on the Leapfrog Wavemaster 30 video transmitter, but nothing helped.
In short, if you don't use any other wireless devices using the 2.4Ghz frequency (cordless phones, wireless network devices), the Terk Leapfrog Wavemaster 30 delivers a great picture with equally great sound. If you do use other wireless devices on the same frequency, I would look for a video transmitter that uses a different frequency (or a wired one), or be prepared to return it to the store.

It's as good as having two or more of everything.By transmitting across the 2.4 GHz frequency band, the LF-30S gives you the clearest possible signal with a range of up to a 150 feet. The Leapfrog's signals penetrate walls, doors, ceilings, and floors with no interference. Multiple channel selection lets you select the best possible signal from four different channels. The LF-30S is easy to install, requiring no tools for setup.A built-in modulator ensures easy connections with any TV, either new or old. Just put together a Windows 7 Media PC that's located in a cabinet a few rooms, a couple of walls (including a bathroom), and fifty feet away from the wireless access point. It's sitting next to a lot of A/V equipment -- in a place where my Nintendo WII has trouble getting access to the wireless connection. It has a great signal and I can stream movies off the Internet no problem. I would have given it a 5 star review because it performs exactly how I needed it to, but setup was actually a bit of a pain. The box says "Works with Windows 7" but when I went to install the drivers from the CD it said "Operating System not Supported." It was a bit annoying, but not a huge hurdle. After I hooked in a direct network cable, Windows 7 automatically downloaded the right drivers and everything started working.

Cisco-Linksys WEC600N Dual Band Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Expresscard Review

Cisco-Linksys WEC600N Dual Band Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Expresscard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro recently lost the Airport card to a glass of water. Before forking over $1400 for a hefty tier 4 repair (AppleCare doesn't cover water damage), I decided to feel out my options for add on WiFi cards.
Initially my experience was horrible, after going through both the MX Nubbin and Dlink USB adapters which claimed to work with Mac OS X I decided to give up. Not that either of the aforementioned products are bad, they are just not quite ready for prime-time when it comes to Mac OS X support (especially Snow Leopard support). Both the Dlink and MX Nubbin used the same Ralink based chipset which has immature Snow Leopard support via software (ie, no WPA Enterprise support, which is a killer for me because I need to connect to corporate WiFi).
Before giving up and forking over the $$$ to Apple Repair, I decided to try to find something which could make use of my ExpressCard slot. To be candid, it's one of those slots on my MBP I didn't plan on ever using. Boy, was I wrong!
I bought this adapter, plugged it in, and instantly Airport lit up! Cautiously optimistic, I joined my WPA Enterprise network and had no issue. I was ecstatic. The card only sticks out about 1.2 inches. I then went home and tried to join my WPA2-PSK network, no problems there either. Full native Airport support, I'm not sure what else one could want...no need to deal with 3rd party driver software! Yay! Actually, double yay.
Wrt to the overheating, I've been rsync'ing a large directory for 49 minutes (sustained @ 40mbit/sec) and:
1) I have not experienced disconnects
2) The card is not warm at all. In fact, the "better battery life" GPU is warmer than anything around my ExpressCard slot.
Summary: I cannot speak to the experience of Windows users with this card but it's been near perfect in Snow Leopard for me.
