Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit Review

Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First and foremost its important to state that powerline networking is not as simple as just plugging in adapters and sprinkling pixie dust. There are many factors that affect the performance of the units in use. To those who have noted that these units did not give them any additional speed over their current implementation is not to say that these items dont work as advertised, it simply illustrates that their partiucular implementation is not ideal for powerline networking. What I am getting at is that in most of the cases mentioned they referenced a already existing solution that was well below the rated speed and thought that they would get more if they placed these in service. If your not alreay maxing out your current solution what makes you think you would get more out of something faster? Obviously, these were situations where the problem was environmental not product specific.
I recently placed a set of these into service in my home to provide networking between floors where a set of bridged wireless routers was not cutting it. These are on separate circuits (different breakers) but on the same phase (same side) in the junction box. I currently see 4 to 5 megabytes of throughput across them which is huge ove my previous solution. My wife is now able to take full advantage of the 20 to 25 megabit per second internet connection as well as enjoy streaming from our media server without any stutter. All in all these were a stellar upgrade to our problem of networking on the second floor. So much so that I will be adding another set to the network to provide extended wired and additional wireless coverage to the house.
Now like i mentioned before powerline networking is more alchemy then science. There are a multitude of problems that can significantly impact your throughput. After doing significnat research before my purchase I discovered several factors that can cause problems for those going down this road. Listed below are some of the major snafus that will cause you problems.
1. If your circuits cross phase (opposite sides of the breaker box) dont even try stick with wireless.
2. If your Circuits are behind GFCI or AFCI you will have problems. All houses built after 2002 probably have AFCI breakers supporting bedrooms and will soon have them for hallways and other rooms.
3. Do nto place them in surge supressors or battery backups with any kind of line filtering.
4. They are all vulnerable to line noise so motors or particularly noisy CFl's can reduce the performance.
5. Poor grounding of your electrical wireing may hurt it.
6. Old wiring can be problematic.
7. Distance will significantly reduce performance quickly.
I summary I would highly recommend these to anywone looking to provide a solution for wired networking in their home where they cannot get to the floor or ceiling to run regular cat5 cable and where wireless is not providing the performance they were looking for. However, make sure the place you buy from has a solid return policy should they not work for your installation. If amazon has them for cheaper go buy them at BB first, test them if they work then you have the option of returning and rebuying or just keep em since it appears the amazon return policy is a bit troublesome for some.

Cisco-Linksys WUSB12 Wireless-B Compact USB Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys WUSB12 Wireless-B Compact USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a wired & wireless 802.11b Linksys network, which has been working well for some time (and now works even better since the addition of a Linksys Wireless Signal Booster).
Recently I became a Beta tester for Tivo's new home network (which I'll review +++ once the NDA expires), so my Tivo-2 needed to access the network via its now-active USB ports. I bought this WUSB12, took it out of the box, plugged it into the Tivo, and I was done. Turning on the Tivo, I went to setup and found it had already recognized the network. I selected the network as my connection choice, it tested the connection and then executed an entire day's download in about 15 seconds. Wow.
The device itself is slick, looking like some kind of big Sharpie. Sliding off the pen-clip cover exposes the business end of this USB device, and also allows access to the release button for the little antenna. There are 2 lights in the base, one for power and one for link detection. The package includes a little USB cable (if you need one) and a lanyard to carry this thing around your neck (not me). I did install the software, which was painless and in my case (network is not password protected) not really necessary. I predict this is going to be a very successful product as more and more wireless networks are deployed in public places like schools, libraries, malls and coffee houses.

Netgear MA521 802.11b Wireless PC Card Review

Netgear MA521 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Average Reviews:

I bought this card after having lots of problems with a linksys card. I have a dell laptop and I'm running Windows XP Home. The linksys card had poor signal strength and repeatedly dropped signals, even if seated next to the router. This netgear card is phenomenal. The signal hasn't been dropped yet and I have a signal throughout my house (4000 sq. ft.) and outside! Avoid the linksys card and buy netgear! I can't say enough good things about this card. I love it!

Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card Review

Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this wireless card as a gift with the Linksys wireless access point. This card was VERY easy to install in my IBM T21 laptop running Windows 2000. The Linksys wireless access point works great, but there have been a number of reviews on the difficulty configuring the Linksys card--we ran into similar problems after purchasing a Linksys Card for a second laptop in the house). After doing my own product comparison, I would highly recommend the NetGear wireless card over the Linksys card. For range of signal and ease of setup, the NetGear card is far superior. With the NetGear Card connectivity rarely drops, and I had no need to download additional drivers to install the card. When placed equidistant from the Linksys wireless access point, we'd see an Excellent Link Quality on the Netgear card Configuration utility, but on the similar utility on the Linksys card, we would see either poor or NO signal. This Netgear card is a fine product, I'm definitely enjoying the freedom of no wires while surfing the web.

NETGEAR WG511 Wireless-G PC Card - Network adapter - CardBus - 802.11b, 802.11g Review

NETGEAR WG511 Wireless-G PC Card - Network adapter - CardBus - 802.11b, 802.11g
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Due to the nature of my work, I have used several types of these 54Mbps wireless cards. The only 2 Wireless Homenetworking I recommend to others is either D-Link or Netgear.
I personally am using a 54Mbps wireless WG111 USB adaptor on my PC plus 2 others in the house.
In addition I use the Neatgear 54Mbps Wireless Card (WG511) for my older Dell laptop. I have used these adaptors for over a year and have not had to replace them, or have had any problem with their peformance.
I have installed hundreds of these for customers. It does come with software for the drivers, AND comes with a NETGEAR PROGRAM that overides windows. I never use the program personally. I just use the CD for the drivers, after insert the adaptor. It also comes with the software updates for vista.
I found that as long as you have a Wireless Netgear Modem, it never seems to have any problems with 128bit encryption or 64bit (which is what I mostly use)
The biggest reason for any Netgear adaptor 128 or 64 bit is 1st) If you use install and use the NETGEAR PROGRAM, then the best way to avoid internet drop off, is to enter you 64 or 128 bit encryption password on the first page of the progam IN THE MANUAL SLOT and not the 2 slots for above! Trust me I know.
2nd) If you plug the adaptor in, and then insert the CD just for the drivers (when prompted) WITHOUT using Netgears program, then you have to set internet options to set LAN and check "automatic" and leave proxy settings alone. Then right click on the little wireless pic in your tray, and select "status" then "properties". From there at the top box scroll down to TCP/IP and click properties and make sure "automatic is checked" The click close and click the middle tab. If there is more than 1 network in your area or in that box, remove them all, except yours. Then make sure to check the box "let windows configure my wireless settings for me" and on the last tab check the box "automatically connect to this network when in range" After that click okay, and close. It may start to try and connect right then, or you can right click on the little wireless computer in tray and select "view wireless networks" and you will see your there, click connect and it will prompt you for you password, twice and thats it. You don't have to type in the password any more. Everytime you turn on your computer, it will automatically detect settings and connect you to your wireless internet network.
It sounds like a lot, but it really is simple and will prevent internet drop off tremendously!
I setup networks for a living and years ago, I used to pull my hair out sometimes, until I finally found out what works the best, regardless of number of networks, users or 64 and 128 encyrption. If the router is setup correctly and you install Neatgear wireless usb or card, you will be very happy. I have moved and used the same USB and CARD for my laptop with 3 dirrent networks, and all I did was set it up with the new password and it is working as of now.
Hope this helps

D-Link RangeBooster N PCI Desktop Adapter Review

D-Link RangeBooster N PCI Desktop Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this card for use in a media center PC that's about 20ft away from the access point. But since it's across a hallway, I didn't want to run a cable over there. It's also going through a wall and a cabinet, yet still manages a very reliable and fast connection.
Installation was very straight forward. Simply install the card, attach the 2 antennas, and install the latest drivers from the D-link website. You'll note that I didn't mention the CD. :) If there were a course on installing cards, the very first thing they would tell you is to ALWAYS get the latest drivers from the manufactures website. The only time you'd want to use the CD is if there is some software that you can't get on the website. Scanners and Printers are a good example of this.
And even if you have to install them from the CD, you still want to go the website and see if there are any updates, patches, drivers, etc. This is even more important with new technology (ie. 802.11n). I should also note that I never use the utility that is installed by wireless cards. In this case, I just used Vista to manage the wireless connection. It connected to my WPA2 secured network without any issues.
I've been transfering several GB of data via wireless for the past severals days without any issues. No dropped connections, lockups, etc. Just like all of my other wireless devices really. I cleared my house of any other devices on the 2.4Ghz frequency years ago to ensure there is as little interference as possible. And while this isn't the final 802.11n standard (not due until Dec 2009), it is latest Draft 2.0. Which so far appears to be the most stable.
Pros:
* Includes low-height bracket
* Inexpensive
* Easy installation
* 802.11n Draft 2.0
* Reliable
Cons:
* They should include a note that tells you go download the latest drivers. :)
Overall I have no issues or complaints and would recommend this card. I suspect the older reviews are a bit more negative simply given the fact that they were written awhile ago and/or relied on the old drivers on the CD. Just get new drivers and you'll be happy.

This card is great if you have a 802.11b router at home and 802.11a or g at work or University.
It is true that it is more expensive than the others, but you get access to three standards instead of 1 or 2.
If you'll always be working in a 802.11g or 802.11a network, buy another card, buy if you need access wherever you go, this is for you.

Cisco-Linksys WPC54GS Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster Review

Cisco-Linksys WPC54GS Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with SpeedBooster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is another solid product from Linksys. The adapter functions like an adapter should function. The installation was simple and free of complications. I have not experienced any break in communication between the laptop and the router.
For your information, this card is installed on a Dell Latitude C610 laptop. The operating system on the laptop is Windows 2000. The other components of my network are as follows: A Dell Dimension 8200, with a Linksys desktop adapter(with Speedbooster also). The Dell is running with Windows XP Pro. The second PC in the system is an old IBM 300PL, which is connected directly to the router through ethernet. A Linksys WRT54GS (Speedbooster) ties it all together. The network has been solid. No drop-offs.
There is really only reason that this adapter did not get five stars from me. In my opinion, the range of the card should have been greater. Even with a straight line of sight from the router, I cannot go far without losing a high percentage of the signal. So far, that has not caused any issues. However, I probably cannot go to the garage and surf the internet, for example.
I can recommend this card to a home user. In a home environment, the limited range of the card should not be an issue at all. For business use, I would probably try to find a Cisco Aeronet.
