GlobeTrotter® Express 442 - Unlocked 3G Card Review

GlobeTrotter® Express 442 - Unlocked 3G Card
Average Reviews:

Before plugging it into a Mac with Snow Leopard, it requires to install the Leopard drivers from option.com, if not, it will cause a kernel panic. Connects fast, it's low profile, and if you use Windows or an older version of Mac OS X, it has a self contained software and drivers (no CD needed). Can be configured (obviously) from System Settings. Great product, I highly recommend it.

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA Review

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living out in the sticks, dialup internet access was what I had to live with for ages. When Verizon added a tower that improved my cell phone coverage, I started wondering if it was an option for my PC as well. I'm not an early adopter of new technology and waited until neighbors had tried various options before I was willing to try this service. I've been using an extra phone line for the computer, the removal of which will save me half what this service costs monthly. Still it's an extra thirty bucks, so it has to be worth it to me.
Some neighbors are using the satellite service but aren't completely satisfied. The only negative comment I got about this little modem and the service was that there is a limit on how much access you get--5 gig/mo--which means you won't be downloading movies or playing internet games much, if at all. Since this isn't an issue for me, I decided to give it a try.
It is definitely faster than dialup access even at the fastest dialup modem speed. I use AOL and the TCP/IP connect is about 3-5 times faster, then all that stuff they display loads much faster as well and I can go about my business without waiting for more than a few seconds. That said, the transfer rate doesn't compare with the Comcast speed of my daughter's setup in town. This service is faster than dialup, but not 'blinding' by any means. As an example, in the past when I tried to download something, I noted the transfer rate on dialup was something like 4-6k per second. Sigh!! Things took forever and sometimes wouldn't download at all. I downloaded the update for my Kindle last night with this little modem and noted 50k/sec transfer rate. Certainly a lot better.
The speed does seem to depend on 'how crowded the air waves' are (or however you'd say that in technospeak :) and how many bars you get. I've found the number of bars is the same as what I get on my Verizon cell phone. Where my desktop PC is located, it varies from 0 to 2. I have ordered the antenna in hopes of boosting that.
Installing the little modem is as easy as running the CD installation disk that comes with it and then plugging the modem into a USB port when prompted to do so. It also comes with a cable in case you want to plug into a port on the back of a desktop PC and set the modem somewhere with easier access. You can leave the modem attached all the time if you want. It turns off when you turn the PC off. When on, it flashes a blue light, which means it's ready to pick up a signal. To connect your computer to the broadband service, you use the modem software (push the 'connect' button), which to me, seems to be equivalent to turning your cell phone on (the modem has a phone number). It is then ready for you to 'make a call', i.e. connect to the internet using some software such as Internet Explorer or AOL.
You can leave the modem connected all day like you would leave your cell phone on and not affect the data limit since that only happens when you are connected to and using the internet. If you use the internet with your cell phone, you know there is a data limit with it as well. This is sort of the same thing.
The modem software will show you what your usage is each time you connect so you're aware of what you've used so far. Sending emails, Facebook updates, photos, etc uses part of your allocation, as well as downloading files, photos, etc. Various internet screen refresh activities uses some. Watching streaming video or playing games uses a lot. Listening to internet radio uses enough that you probably won't want to do that all the time. For me, after 5 days of email, Facebook postings, attempting to watch some short videos and listening to the AOL radio one day just to see what impact it would have, plus downloading the Kindle software update, posting a few Amazon reviews, and the like, I've used about 225mg, or about 50mg a day, so I should be able to stay within the limit easily with no change to my regular internet activities.
I still cannot really watch streaming videos such as those on YouTube with my 1-2 bar connectivity, without breaks while it reloads the next bit. Even though it reloads faster than before, I have to want to see it pretty badly to put up with that.
One concern: This morning there seemed to be a problem with the modem connecting to Verizon. It was resolved within half an hour and it is Black Friday, which may or may not have anything to do with it. I will update if that happens again, but otherwise it has connected fast and remained connected without problem.
Bottom line: It is definitely better than dialup--for me about 5 times faster. That's not seriously fast, but acceptable and worth the extra money to me, especially since I don't have any options other than satellite which is affected by weather, trees, and costs more as well.

X6 Adsl Modem/router Review

X6 Adsl Modem/router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a DSL user and it seems there are not too many companies catering my needs, which are a combined modem and wireless router. I made the mistake of getting such a box (2wire) from ATT. It would broadcast about 1 meter (I am not kidding), meaning that I had to use an ethernet cable. My next mistake was to get a linksys router to put in front of 2wire (using the 2wire as a modem only). Everytime there was a storm or electrical surge, one or the other reset and claimed the same IP address. I had wires running everywhere and learned more about windows networking than I ever wanted to know. I had to go static IP addresses and bypass DCHP to get anything to work. So, I was trying to choose between d-link and zoom and saw one favourable review for zoom (Lopez), so I took a chance on it. As he says, it works as advertised and I am down to one small box and very few wires. The wireless is faster than the linksys. I only give the warning that, if you are like me and have other things installed that you are switching out, you should uninstall any software and get rid of old network connections. Also, this router has an on/off switch that is set to off. I suffered a momentary heart skip when I plugged it in and no light came on. The manual is fairly good (pdf) but is not savable on hard disk which is not too reasonable (you can print it). Now, if ATT would bundle a quality product like this, it would surely enhance its image as an IP. Does that notion require a Harvard MBA?

I bought this NETGEAR DM111P ADSL2+ Ethernet DSL modem to work with a new NETGEAR router (WNDR3700). NETGEAR support helped me with the setup and every thing worked fine for about 6 hours. I returned the modem to Buy.com for a refund which was promptly processed. I went back to my old SpeedStream 5100 DSL modem and have not had any problems since I reinstalled the SpeedStream.

Zyxel XOHM Wimax WIRELESS MODEMThis modem operates exactly like your cable or DSL modem, without the need to plug anything into a hardwired line Simply plug the modem into a power source and then you have the option of either connecting it to your computer via ethernet OR hooking it up to any standard WiFi router and connecting that way. The built-in internal antenna is very powerful and can reportedly pull in a stronger signal than the ExpressCard. If you need to share the signal with multiple computers, this is definitely the device for you.The size of the device is small enough to make it portable (6.5"W x 6.45"H x 4.65"D), but you will need a power source. This modem is best for people that are going to use the service mainly in one place, or, if they travel, know that they will have access to a power supply.Tech Specs:WiMAX Air Interface* Reference standard: IEEE 802.16e-2005* SOFDMA* Duplex mode: TDD* Frequency: 2.500-2.700GHz* Channel Bandwidth / FFT size: 5MHz/512FFT and 10MHz/1024FFT* Modulation: QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM* FEC: CC (Convolutional Coding), CTC (Convolutional Turbo Code)* Maximum ratio combining support* Maximum output power at antenna port: 27dBm 1dB* Built-in antennas : 5dBi Omni x 2* Sensitivity: -99dBm QPSK 1/2 Two SMA antenna connectors for external antenna* Aggregate throughput Up to 30 Mbps* QoS management based on classification* Security: EAP-TTLS/CHAP-based user authentication, CMAC message authentication, CCM mode 128-bit AES data cipheringIP Networking* User configurable Router (RIPv1, RIPv2) and NAT (one-to-one, many-to-one)* Embedded security: Firewall with SPI, content filtering, Java/Active X/ Cookie/ Keyword blocking* Major ALG (SIP/FTP/H.323)* DHCP client/server/relay

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router Review

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my DSL modem died, I went to the store to discover this hardware combo. What an excellent device to include the 4-port WIRELESS switch/router with the DSL modem! Less hardware, less cables, more simplistic. I have a mixed PC/Mac environment and used the PC for setup since the included CD didn't mention anything about Macs. The install assistant was worthless. It actually just shows you photos of which cables go where, then it makes you restart the PC! There is an extensive .pdf manual on the CD, and if you pop the disc into you Mac, you'll find the English version of it in the "Mac" folder. - Along with with a "Glossary" .pdf and a "Support" .pdf. So while I do wish Zoom included good old fashioned paper versions of these, they did do a good job of including all of this on the CD, but you do have to look!
Luckily, Zoom did include a small sheet of paper showing the IP address, user ID & password needed to access the settings through a web browser. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward and the setup menus are laid out well. The menus are completely different from Linksys, but very easy to navigate. When it was all setup and done, my Mac & PC were talking to each other, but I still wasn't connected to the Internet. After calling SBC/ATT I spoke with a rep who admitted they didn't officially support any modems that aren't sold by ATT, but he took a stab at my settings anyway. It turned out that I needed my full SBC email address as the user ID, not just the first portion. The second I saved the settings, I connected to the internet!
I also found the WEP security settings very easy to setup and a nice strong signal emitting from the X6. Once the device is setup, you can virtually forget about it. I can't speak for this devices longevity yet, but it's nice knowing it has a 2-year warranty.
One thing missing on the back of this unit (like many current routers) is an UPLINK jack to daisy chain this into another router if necessary. Being that this is designed for a home/small office environment, it's probably not a big deal for most users who will never need to upgrade beyond 4 ports.
I think networking gear reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. Most of us (myself included) are NOT network professionals. Networking computers is considered by many, to be the hardest thing to do in I-T. Since it is a complicated scenario, many people I believe make the mistake of blaming the hardware, when many times, they have incorrect settings or software issues causing them to pull their hair out. Overall, I think networking companies are doing an excellent job making equipment that can now be installed by the average Joe. 10 or 15 years ago, that was unheard of.

I am on my 3rd Motorola modem in less than 2.5 years. I can only use this one with AT&T DSL line. Each one of them broke right after 1 year warranty expired, and they are not cheap. As dependent as I am on Internet connection, I am seriously thinking about switching to another provider, since I can't afford paying for a replacement at any cost when another modem dies instantly without warning signs. Last time I had to pay $80 in store which is outrageous. I had cable modems before and they all became obsolete while still in good physical health, lasting me for 3-4 years each.

This modem is much better than the one I used to use. I switched from a T Mobile usb modem to this brand new Sierra Wireless one. It comes unlocked, even though it says it is not in the product description. (At lease mine was unlocked). I use it when I travel abroad, and it works perfectly. The only downside I have noticed is that it eats battery life. I have a netbook that is supposed to get around 8-10 hours of battery life, which it does. However, when this is plugged into it, I only get around 4-5 hours of battery life. Otherwise, I think it is great. It comes with the ATT Communication manager on the device itself, and auto-installs when you plug it in. It also has a Micro SD Card reader, I do not use it, but some people find it helpful. It saves a USB port so you can use it as a USB Memory stick and a USB Modem at the same time. As of now, I have not had any problems with at all. I do not expect to have any.

I have two stores that rely on internet service to run credit cards. I dread getting calls when my internet service is down. It doesn't happen often but it can be costly. I got this Verizon USB modem for backup along with prepaid service. I started with a 1 day access to install and test. First location gave me an odd Error 678 on my pc and would not connect after I activated it. An online search revealed that it could be any odd number of settings on my pc that was causing the problem. It was looking grim. I than installed at my other location and it connected just fine. It also ran a device update there as well as a software update to the software running on my pc. I than took it back to the first store where I first updated the software running on the pc. Now I have a back up internet service ready for both stores without having to committ to a service plan.
Next step is to get another one of these so each store has one. Keep in mind that a phone number is assigned to each device so you'll have to activate the new device. I'll also keep a prepaid card good for one week at each store. You can pay by credit card but I don't want to have to share that with employees if I can't be there.
