TRENDnet 4-Port Network USB 2.0 Hub TU2-NU4 (White) Review

I was looking for a USB network server so I could use any of my 3 printers with any of the 4 systems on my network. Installation was simple and the server works perfectly. I wish it wouldn't automatically disconnect the chosen printer so fast (3 minutes) but it does work like it states it would and I would recommend it to anyone looking to solve the same problem I had and especially when using Windows 7. I tried another unit that was 3 times as expensive but it wouldn't work with Windows 7.

TRENDnet 108Mbps Wireless Super G USB Adapter TEW-444UB Review

TRENDnet 108Mbps Wireless Super G USB Adapter TEW-444UB
Average Reviews:

i bought this to use in my newly upgraded desktop with windows vista. it CONTINUALLY drops the wireless signal (at least every hour) - when you click to connect to a network it does not find any networks. pulling it out and pushing it back in seems to recover the network almost every time, but this is really annoying to have to do repeatedly. it is not a signal strength issue in general, as another desktop in the same room and two laptops that frequent the room have no trouble getting good signals.

I buyed 3 of this cards. They works fine in winXP with and without Service Pack 2. This cards are very cheap and works good. I connect them to a Linksys WRT54g. [...]
The card uses Texas Instruments chips. Seems like the chipset company don't support Linux. Hence, the card is not easily to install in Linux OS. You can find some web pages describing the linux instalation, but I had no time to do a try.
The non-Linux support is the only reason to give them 3 star. I will like to have a plug&play linux support as is the case of a lot of other cards.

I've owned this router for about 6 or 7 months now and I cannot say that I am impressed with it. While the installation was very easy, and it works, it constantly needs to be reset. As a result of constantly resetting it, I've had to call tech support to get help on how to fix it (security settings, resetting the router thoroughtly, etc). They've been helpful both times I've called, but it's irritating that I have to call at all. If I can get the thing up and running (for months, mind you), why can't it STAY up and running??? Oh, and I've never gotten the print server to work. I had very little interest in it doing so, so I didn't try too hard.

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue)
Average Reviews:

I converted my LaserJet 5MP (what a workhorse!) to wireless with this unit. It communicates well with the Ubuntu and Windows Vista laptops in the house. Wireless printing is much more convenient than print sharing since you don't have to turn on an extra machine to act as a server.
The documentation could be better and you need a Windows computer (or WINE) to get this running because the web interface doesn't work out of the box. But it's been running fine for weeks now that I've installed it.
I haven't had a problem with signal strength at all and my printer is upstairs while my computer is often downstairs.
I would recommend this adapter with the caveat that it's easy to set up if you know the basics of home networks. From the other reviews and comments, I'd say that if you don't know what an IP address is or how to install a networked printer on your OS, you might want to look elsewhere for something simpler to install.

I'm using this to power 4 Panasonic BB-HCM531A outdoor networked security cameras from the PoE ports. I also have a laptop connected to it running security recorder software. It's connected to my home network running perfectly, passing the video data streams from the cameras. It's on 24/7 and doesn't run hot. I like the metal case, compact size, status indicator LEDs on the front, and the generous cord length supplied on the external power adapter. The current price is quite good when compared to other PoE capable switches available on the market.

TRENDnet SecurView Wireless Day/Night Internet Surveillance Camera Server with 2-Way Audio TV-IP312W (Silver) Review

TRENDnet SecurView Wireless Day/Night Internet Surveillance Camera Server with 2-Way Audio TV-IP312W (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this camera for my sister, who just had a new baby. I wanted a wireless web came with two way audio, so that she could take it from room to room. I couldn't find a simple wireless webcam, so I bought this thing, which does way more than I wanted. Luckily, I like gadgets, and this is one neat gadget. However, its very difficult to setup if you want to use some of its advanced capabilities. Since the manual does not give very good instructions, I'll try to describe the basic things you need to do to set it up, as well as provide an overview of what it does. Do not buy this camera if you are not comfortable configuring your router. Someone who doesn't have basic networking skills would probably give this camera one star.
Pros
1) Can be an excellent security camera. The motion detection software works well, and the IR night vision is very good. The two way audio over the internet means you can speak to people it sees. It can be setup to send an email to your cell phone, and then you can log onto it with a PC and view and speak to your intruders or guests. It can also record video clips to network storage, although I couldn't get it to mount a shared windows directory. It seems to want a linux based shared drive.
2)The video quality is good, although not what you would call high quality. It's a little bit jerky, but that's what you get with this technology.
3) Has a nice mounting bracket that you can screw to a wall. The bracket has a tilt swivel mount on it like a camera tripod mount, so you can easily attach/detach the camera from the mount. This means you can carry it from room to room when using as a webcam, then put it back on the wall mount to use it as a security camera.
4)The included software can view multiple cameras at the same time, with each camera being displayed in a tile, just like a professional security camera system.
Cons
1)Horrible setup. If you don't know how to configure your wireless router, you won't be able to view this camera over the Internet. See below. However, if you only want to view it from a PC on your local network, and don't need the email notices when it detects motion, you can set this thing up just fine. This means you can't use it as a webcam, though. The instructions do not tell you anything about configuring your router to do this.
2) No autofocus. How do you focus a wireless camera that is in a different room than the computer monitor you use for viewing the camera? You can't, because you can't turn the manual focus ring and see the results as you turn it. This makes for a lot of back and forth to get the thing focused. The solution is to bring your wireless laptop with you as you move the camera.
3)Won't mount a windows shared directory. Technical support has yet to answer my email about this. Basically, this means you can't have it automatically record video clips to your PC when it detects motion. You can still record video clips manually, through the software interface, though, even onto a PC over the Internet.
4)No tilt/pan. Some cameras in this price range come with tilt/pan. I sacrificed it to get the two way audio and the IR night vision. The field of view is pretty wide, so I don't really miss the tilt/pan.
Setup tips
Most people's wireless router will have a dynamic IP address assigned to it by your Internet provider. Computers and cameras on your wireless network will have private IP addresses that are not routable to the Internet. By default, this camera wants to use 192.168.10.30 as its IP address. Your router may not recognize this private address. Mine was setup to only use a 192.168.1.x network. I had to reconfigure the router's private network to the 192.168.10.x network to talk to the camera.
Furthermore, there is no way to view the camera on that private network from a PC over the Internet. However, you can configure your router to route incoming requests from the Internet to the camera. You have to set up ports 80 and 554 to be redirected to the camera's private IP. Next, you have to be able to find your routers external dynamic IP address from a web browser on an Internet PC. The only way to do that is to sign up for a dynamic DNS service. When your router gets its IP assignment, it will report it to the dynamic DNS service, who will map it to a URL that you will type in your browser. Once set up, you view your camera over the Internet by typing in your URL. The dynamic DNS service sends your browser to your router's IP address, then your router redirects the request to the internal private IP address of the camera. A similar redirect would be needed if you were running a hardware firewall on your network. Note, the camera does have the ability to report its IP address to a dynamic DNS service, too. Only use this if the camera's IP address is actually routable over the Internet. Most of us will have the camera on a private network, with an IP address that is not routable. In this cae, if you use the dynamic DNS from the camera, instead of your router, it will not work.
If you want to setup email from the camera, you need to be able to configure it to talk to your provider's SMTP server. It's very similar to setting up an email client, so if you can do that, you can do this. It can send email and record pics/vid without you having to setup that dynamic DNS, thankfully. You only need the dynamic DNS if you want to view it over the internet.

TRENDnet Wireless N PCI Adapter TEW-643PI Review

TRENDnet Wireless N PCI Adapter TEW-643PI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought it locally for ~$40. After installing it, I cannot get it to connect faster than 26 Mbps, when I should be getting 150Mbps (that's as fast as my Linksys N Router will go). Connecting to a Netgear G router will only get me 11 Mbps - nowhere near where it should be.
Besides it being slow, it seems to lose signal every now and then. It recovers after a minute, but my Vaio laptop (a couple years old and a few rooms FURTHER from the router) *never* has any problems losing signal.
The Trendnet wireless configuration utility is not awful, but it is far from user-friendly.
It gets two stars because it connects and it works. But not very well.

After unpacking the print server I was up and printing within 15 minutes on both printers from both computers in my network. It took me a couple of minutes to get the utility "PS-Utility" to see the print server by disabling the Windows firewall and then discovering that I could add the utility to the exceptions list in order to enable to firewall again. I am able to access all printer specific functions through the drivers as if the printers were connected directly to the computer.
It has been a couple of days and I have had no problems.

Vtech 6800G Plug and Share Wireless Router (802.11g) Review

Vtech 6800G Plug and Share Wireless Router (802.11g)
Average Reviews:

This router is an excellent value. i got this and the AT&T 6500G for 50 at COMP U.S.A. I decided to go for this because after searching for hours for the "perfect" router, i saw pretty much everything had mixed reviews. This one had no reviews so i thought what the heck, i'd try it out. Setup was so simple, i was amazed. After hearing everybody's complaints about setup, i was stunned at how easy this was. Just follow the directions right out of the box and you're set. The speed is great. I can load pages just as fast (cable modem) as with a wired ethernet connection. The only thing i think might be an issue with people who have huge houses is range. I have a house that is about 45 feet long, and the router is at one end of it on the ground floor. I took my notebook upstairs on the opposite end of the house and i had 3 bars our of 5. I'm not sure how it will perform in big house. But keep in mind that my notebook does not have an ATT PC Card. the computer i hooked up with the ATT PCI Card gets 5 bars from about 30 feet away on teh same floor, through a wall. Since the range doesn't affect me, I still gave it 5 stars. Great design too, looks nice sitting on top of my PC. Go get this thing, it is a great deal.

I purchased 2 of these units to setup WiFi for a mountain condo building (3 floors by 5 units). Both units are mounted on opposites end of the building on the top (3rd) floor. Setup was relatively easy (maybe not if a first timer). The one time I had a question for Trendnet (prior to purchase) their response was prompt and helpful. Units are attached to a DSL modem/router. Since we can only get 7MB DSL service I have limited the APs to 11b. So can't comment on higher speeds. So far all units are reporting good service.
These units are hard to beat for the price. Not as powerful as the Cisco units but you can buy 2 (or more) for the same price.
Note: Units have been installed about 5 months now at a condo building in the Colorado mountains at about 9000 feet. Units are mounted outdoors. Temperature range in that time has been about 85 to -20 F. So far so good.

U.S. Robotics USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router (22 Mbps) Review

U.S. Robotics USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router (22 Mbps)
Average Reviews:

I have been using this router over a month now and it has not given me one single problem in terms of network connection. The wireless range is far much better than the SMC Barricade 7004AWBR. I initially bought the SMC 7004AWBR because it has been out on the market much longer and most people have given thumbs up to it. But it literally keeps locking up on me when I tried to transfer a 120MB file from one computer to another over the wired connection. The U.S. Robotics, however, never gave me one single problem. The setup was fast and painless (like 10 minutes or so) and everything just work.
The only slight issue I have with this router is that the printer server does not behave as I expected. If I turn the printer off, the admin screen will show "Device Printer" error and sometimes I have to reset the router. Also, the router only comes with only 2 wired LAN connection, whereas most other ones come with either 3 or 4.

Netgear RT314 Internet Access Router Review

Netgear RT314 Internet Access Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, a note on switches vs hubs. A hub shares the bandwith between connected devices. So, if you have one computer going through the hub to the internet and a second connecting to a third over the lan for a file transfer, they have at most 100mbs total between them. A switch actually routes a dedicated connection for each pair of communicating devices so that they can communicate at full bandwidth. If you've already got a switch, you might want to consider the somewhat less expensive RT311 which is the router/firewall without the switch. If you have a hub, on the other hand, I'd suggest going with the 314 instead, the hub can still be used to allow your network to grow beyond 4 devices (after all, two computers, a laptop and a network printer and you're tapped out with the 314 on its own).
Anyway, this is a great device. I pulled it out of the box, plugged in the wires and everything worked immediately. I'm sharing cable internet between a windows 2000 box and PowerMac (running OS9 and DAVE 2.5) with no problems at all.
It's 4 stars because the web interface is really quite useless. To properly configure this device (including the very cool dynamic dns capabilities) you need to telnet to the box. Not a *big* deal, but still a minor nuisance. There's no reason the web interface couldn't handle these other configuration options as well.
I had considered the Linksys box which is very similar in capabilities, but searching usenet archives revealed that the netgear is a much more reliable device.

If you are looking for a 100% Linux supported WiFi card, and one that's low cost - buy this one. It worked with Ubuntu 9.10 and Backtrack 4 Final, out of the box, with no driver compiling and packet injection works 100%

TRENDnet 4-Port Gigabit Firewall Router TWG-BRF114 (Black) Review

TRENDnet 4-Port Gigabit Firewall Router TWG-BRF114 (Black)

At first install, speeds were capped well below my ISP's capacity. After upgrading the firmware (which can ONLY be done using I.E. since their code is not compatible with Firefox yeah, major yellow flag!) to v1.0 Revision 04 the speeds were acceptable, however the router disconnects if idle and for some reason you cannot turn that feature off. It also does not return ping requests, there is a serious bug in the firmware that tech support could not overcome after over an hour on the phone and 3 different techs.
Also there is no way to save the original Revision 02 firmware, and they don't host it on their site so it can't be downloaded. Once you upgrade the firmware (as their tech support insists!) there is no way to go back! Their top tier tech support never called back like they said they would. 24/7 tech support my A$$!
The NAT implementation is horrible, it does let you open port ranges manually but cannot forward them to a specific host on your network without jumping through hoops and creating a "virtual server" why can't they just do like everybody else does?
Also you cannot delete or edit "default services" that they bind to certain ports, what if you want to use that port for another application?
Overall, save yourself the trouble and jog on over to Radio Shack and get something that works, something you can take back within a few minutes rather than have to get an RMA, ship the item, wait for credit, yada yada.
