Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

I use RCN broadband and this modem is rock solid. It has never locked up on me, and does not require frequent reboots. About once a month or so I'll cycle the power on it just because my cable provider says to do so. But I have absolutely no complaints about the modem itself. I've had it for 2 years, and never had any troubles with it.
The highest speed I've gotten from my connection using this modem is 755kb/5500kb

RCA Digital Cable Modem (DCM245R) Review

RCA Digital Cable Modem (DCM245R)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a couple years we had one of those rental units from the CATV Company. When we found out that under the rental agreement, if it broke they had the right to charge us way too much cash for replacement, it was time to get our own unit. In rental fees alone, the RCA paid for itself in less than a year. The cable company itself has gone away from the expensive units of the past, and uses a black, lay-down only version of the RCA modem.
The RCA model here can be used as an upright (which is the way we use it), or attach the rubber feet, and use it as a lay-down model. It features either USB connection, or the standard Ethernet. I have an older computer running Windows 98SE, and the generic Ethernet card did not seem to work. The USB option works well, and is a nice option. It also features a rear reset, and a front on-off button. One feature that's hard to appreciate if you didn't know about it is the placement of the cable connector. On the old rental unit it was high in the middle, and even with the large modem size it would sometimes tip the modem if the cable were disturbed. RCA places their connection right near the bottom when used in the upright position. This not only alleviates the problem with our old rental unit, but also helps prevent tipping of the much lighter RCA unit.
We have used the RCA unit now for several months, and find it performs as well or better, than the old expensive rental unit. If we could ask for anything more (hence the four stars), we'd like units to show a simple display of the current connection speed, and activity. We realize this is available in software, but its nice to see it before attempting a download connection, or accessing Internet monitors. Currently the RCA unit flashes in response to changing speeds, but we'd like to see a simple numerical indication. As more CATV high-speed connections are installed, overall speed will decline. In the future, we'd like to try and hit the best times for fast downloads. Even over a CATV modem, a recent download of OS updates for my fathers Mac, took a few hours to complete. Now that video, media, and other files are getting ever bigger; its nice to know what speeds can be obtained.

TERAYON TJ 700X TJ715X CABLE MODEM DOCSIS 2.0 Review

TERAYON TJ 700X TJ715X CABLE MODEM DOCSIS 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this modem because it identical to the Comcast provided rental unit I have been using continuously for six years without a single problem or dropped connection. They have now raised the modem rental to $7.00 per month so buying my own modem is long overdue. I purchased this on Amazon Marketplace at a good price.
The problem I have encountered is that after connecting the new modem, I called Comcast to register the MAC address, I was told that it was "already in one of their systems but not in their inventory and the systems don't talk to each other so it can not be registered." I have written them asking for a better explanation or resolution and so far have only received a canned answer which does not address the problem. Great modem based on my past experience and I'm happy with Comcast's product but Comcast's support computing systems seem to be very poorly done.

Touchstone® Telephony Modem TM602G Review

Touchstone® Telephony Modem TM602G

It's the same model as the one distributed in MA by Comcast so should work and for me with little hassle. The only hassle was that I had to call both Comcast Internet and Voice in order to activate the ethernet and telephone plugs on the modem. Tried to get the TM402P I also got from Amazon and it wouldn't connect without a Comcast technician coming over (for $30). Anyway this eMTA is lighter than the Scientific Atlanta or that other Arris model and in my opinion looks better (sleek and not boxy). The technician that came over to set up the Comcast provided TM602G told me that they were having problems with the scientic atlantas (didn't tell me what, but bought this since it's the same one the technician gave me).

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps Review

Zoom CableModem 5241 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 42 Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used previosly the modem model 5041 over 5 years already. There were issues with connection at first time, but it was solved when I called to my provider (Comcast by the way). Since then I never had any problems with this equipment. I would keep it till it die of the old age but on Dec 14 2009 Comcast upgraded its network so I had to pick new modem from their approved list of modems for 3 days before of marked day. I checked reviews and picked the ZOOM 5241. I have wireless router (linksys 54G) connected to my 5241.
What did I do for setup.
1. Unplugged old modem from power, coaxial and router,
2. Plugged new modem 5241 to his power adapter, coaxial cable and router (with RJ45 connector),
3. Lunched Internet browser (Firefox or IE),
4. I got Comcast page with instructions automatically (It wouldn't let go for another until setup is done),
5. Followed technician instructions (which not require any special skills),
6. Entered my current account number and Comcast shown me all my data including physical and mac addresses. I did not plug in directly from modem to PC. At first Comcast did not pass linksys. I just ignored it and "run diagnostic" (which is just a button) again. Everything was set up automatically. After too reboots I got perfect connections wire and wireless.
Downloading speed jumped up dramatically.
PS. One week later.
Zoom 5241 works now with renewed Comcast network very good. However once I lost connection but because of the my LinkSys 54G wireless router. After I hit reset button on it I got all my connections back. So it was a linksys issue. Right now Zoom + Linksys work flawlessly. And I noticed that downloading speed went up about 10 times faster (Limewire from 15-24 Kbs to 200-500 Kbs - 250 average).
Well 5041 is useless for Comcast IP for today anyway but 5241 works perfect. I picked mine in Fry's Electronics with described above characteristics for $54.
Good luck

I used to have a cable modem that was provided by my cable company but I didn't want to pay the monthly lease fee anymore so I went out and bought this D-Link Cable Modem. I wasn't sure what all I had to do to get it to work, but when I asked a more computer knowledgable friend he said I just needed to plug it in and it will automatically configure itself.
So that's all I did. I called my cable company and told them I'd be switching modems, they wanted some long number off the back of the modem and said I was all set to go. So I plugged in the coax cable on the modem and plugged in the power. Within the next 10 seconds I was connected tot he Internet again.
Very easy.

- Arris Comcast Touchstone Telephony VOIP BROADBAND Modem TM402P

This modem worked perfectly, but I wanted to warn customers in Pennsylvania that it is illegal to buy this modem as Comcast has exclusive rights in this state. Pennsylvania customers are forced to lease this modem from Comcast and cannot purchase it either from Comcast or other vendors. The vendor I bought this from, MGI Warehouse, did not inform me of this and I ended up having to return it to them and therefore losing money due to shipping costs. Amazon also did not inform me of this.
So before purchasing this item please call Comcast and make sure it is okay in your state to buy this from another vendor.

Cisco CM100 Certified Refurbished LINKSYS Cable Modem Review

Cisco CM100 Certified Refurbished LINKSYS Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this item and had made arrangements to cable service started. What I thought was interesting was the tech from Comcast said this device was completely unusable since the serial number had been registered elsewhere I had to rent a unit from him. After a couple of days, I called the service department and while on the phone he told me all I needed was the MAC address and they would take care of the rest.
Well, needless to say, the unit works great! Was even able to connect my router to and set up my network with no issues. What was Comcast thinking? Well, when I got my bill they overcharged me for the service I signed up for and kept the rent charges on the bill after I returned their modem.
The modem works great and I'm glad I made the purchase!

Cisco-Linksys HPRO200 HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router and am very happy with its' performance. Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.

Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Internet Gateway Router Review

Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Internet Gateway Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The RT311 is a simple, easy-to-install solution for sharing a broadband Internet connection for small office / home office (SOHO) users. It's about as close to plug and play as you're likely to get.
Most situations can be covered with the Windows-based installation tool. You'll need all the pertinent info from your provider (IP address, gateway address, DNS address, netmask, etc.), but with this in-hand, the graphical installer makes it easy.
More advanced needs, and people who frequently play online multi-user games, will need more expertise to use the RT311. Advanced configurations can only be made by telnetting to the box itself, or by connecting a serial cable and using a terminal program. This won't be an easy task for average users, and while the manual is well-written and thorough, it can't (and doesn't) train newbies on the basics; some level of skill is assumed.
Its "firewall" security is centered around NAT (network address translation), which does afford some level of security for your network. (It's also what makes connection sharing work.) In short, private IP addresses are assigned to PCs on your network, and the RT311 remaps connections to a single public IP address assigned by your provider. In this way, your PC is not directly accessible from the outside world, since by default, unsolicited incoming TCP/IP connections are denied access to the network. That's fine, but for real security, look to a SonicWall or something more advanced. The RT311 won't likely do much for certain types of hacker attacks, like Denial of Service (DoS), "ping of death," IP spoofing, and the like, which some more sophisticated solutions do address.
NAT also causes problems for some applications. For example, IRC will be tough to use, because most IRC servers require IDENT, and IDENT requests won't pass through the device to your desktop. Dialpad.com, Napster uploads to other users, and a variety of other applications will not work in the RT311's default configuration. You'll need to configure "SUA" for this (i.e., port remapping), but again, that requires telnet or a terminal program, and non-technical users will likely find this a challenge (at least at first).
In addition, your port remapping capabilities are limited. You have your choice of remapping everything to a particular machine on the network (not a good idea, and defeats all firewall security, so use it temporarily and sparingly), or mapping selected ports by number. But you can configure a maximum of only six (6) of those, which may not be enough for power users or networks with many users and applications. (The D-Link and Linksys solutions that compete with the RT311 offer just slightly more flexibility here.)
Using a hardware solution like the RT311 is, in my experience, far better and more reliable than software-based solutions like WinProxy. (But of course, WinProxy offers web caching, content filtering, and other features that the RT311 and its competitors do not. But I favor the reliability of a dedicated piece of hardware to loading down my PC with yet another task.)
Otherwise, the unit does as advertised. It's economical, well supported, well warranted, and well built. Its manual, which is supplied electronically, is as good as they come. And most everything you'll need is in the box (including the basic required cables).
One final note: Be aware that this is a real, Ethernet-based solution. You'll need a 10-Base-T or 100-Base-T local area network (LAN), including hubs or switches as needed, and your DSL or cable modem will also need 10-Base-T Ethernet for hook-up. (This box is not really the right choice for sharing dial-up or ISDN connections.)

Netgear's RT311 Internet access gateway router allows up to 32 users secure admission to the Internet from a single ISP (Internet service provider) account. It works in conjunction with DSL or cable modems for high-speed Internet access.
Compatible with 10/100 Mbps networks, the Netgear RT311 establishes a firewall that prevents hackers and unauthorized users from interfering in your business. NAT protocols hide the local IP addresses from outside Internet users. Port forwarding and customizable filters allow only authorized users to gain access to your site and files.
The Netgear RT311 is compatible with Internet conferencing, RealAudio, RealVideo, and most chat programs. FirstGear, a Windows-based configuration tool, enables simple installation. All the necessary cables are included, as is a setup guide.

I've been through the whole progression of sharing the cable modem at my house for 5 home PC's and my work laptop. I started with the Microsoft solution of ICS (I specifically upgraded to Windows 98 SE to get that feature). I used thinnet on my home network and it worked ok but having to have the one PC on for the rest was awkard and it was slow for the kids multiplayer games. I then moved on to a SMC 7004BR router and it was bliss. Easy setup except the printer sharing. Even there I called their support and they walked me through it. I have since stepped up to the 7008BR for two locations I manage and these are better than the 7004BR (Faster too). I cannot recommend them enough.

I bought this to avoid the monthly rental and still (hopefully) be covered technology-wise for a couple of years.
Setup was a breeze - all I had to do was call into Comcast with the new MAC address and modem make/model# and the setting up on their side took a couple of mins. I had occasional link drops over the next couple of days, but things stabilized well enough after that.
I have the 20mbps Performance internet from Comcast, and this was showing me about 24.5 Mbps on average on [...] and 23Mbps speakeasy; was getting about 19Mbps with my old Comcast-supplied Scientific Atlantic docsis 1.1 modem.
I haven't had any trouble so far in the past month with this product.

It is a class above other modems such as Toshiba, Terayon, D-Link (only customer supplied) and the most dreadful one of all, the Ambit.
Most times we were given Ambit modems to install (about 2 or 3 Ambit for every other type on a daily basis). Most times we had problems that were modem defect related, they were Ambit modems, however, that can't be chalked off to an average likelihood because they were installed more. Now, they failed in high numbers like about 1 out of 4 or 5 before an install could even be completed. To their credit, althought Ambits were what I see as unreliable (drop dead on a dime!), they did stretch the limtis of low signal way beyond cable co specs (+10 to -10 dBs) and sometimes worked (gag) even low as -14dB to (one particular occassion I remember -19dB where other modems could never lock on or would never stay locked on to the two frequencies. Although I can't describe the level of service they would provide at that point of signal degredation as anything better than "beats dial-up" when it would not achieve the "theoretical" maximum speeds of 3Mbps given customers but would get a more lackluster 300-600Kbps. Some customers were happy to be able to get that and more anxious to have that right away than to reschedule for another tech to come later and finish the installation after fixing line problems causing such low signals when it wasn't something that could be found and fixed within the alloted time for the original install.
Our second most installed modem were Motorola Surfboards. While they truly operated more inline with their published specs on signal levels (down to about -12dB usually, -15dB if the stars were aligned), they were definitely more tolerant of noise in my opinion and much more reliable than the other modems we had installed in terms of staying solidly connected and operational with consistent speed day in day out on any good line. The only time I ever had to remove a Motorola from service for a "modem problem" actually turned out to be a bad power supply that failed during installation, not the actual Motorola product itself! I can't say that for any other modem I've installed.
The other modems are usually more stylish, or a bit more sleek, but in my book written by a sometimes frustrated cable technician who has installed, moved, and replaced hundreds of HSCI setups locally, 3 style points aren't worth even 1 reliability point when it keeps customers (or me!) from getting pissed off, so I'd stick with Motorola every time if I had a choice which one to install on any given job because I knew I wouldn't get a bad report or call when others failed just back hours or days after installing them.
I'd stake all my experience in the field with all kinds of setups and problems with Motorola being undeniably the most dependable and functional. They truly are the kings of Cable modem.
